Lets talk Ebay FMIC. Especially if you have one.

I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

Megan FMIC

No name brand but has the standard psi and efficiency spill

Street Imports FMIC

XOXO Core but has good feedback on the core

It's just a piping kit they have those all over ebay. Hell you can get the same thing from jegs, summit, etc etc. It's cheap because you have to fab everything up. It's not a kit that is custom fit for your car that you slap on and say I'm done in 20 mins. Do a search on "eclipse intercooler pipe" you will see about 20 of those diy piping kits.

wow.. around $300~ shipped for 28" x 12" x 3" bar and plate core, ic piping, couplers, clamps, MBC and HKS SSQV style bov!? OMG

I doubt that intercooler kit will fit. They always sell I/C's with a bunch of reproduction blow off valves and universal piping and clamps in hopes that they'll fit.

I dont think those pipes are ready to put on either. It looks like its just a pipe kit and you have to fab it yourself.

Either way, For the price... You can't go wrong. They actually have ones that are 9" tall only (Would fill the 2gb front bumper perfect) For even cheaper.. For a core, Piping (It says the piping it comes with) And couplers/clamps.. You can't really go wrong if it is a good intercooler (Never tested, So I can not speak for that part.) The others would just be an added extra so to speak.

You're right. That piping will NOT fit on a 1G. As a matter of fact, the reason you don't see pre-fabbed kits for 1Gs from those EBAY sellers, is because piping route on a 1G driver's side is complicated. Running pipe round the frame is not the best solution, and requires extensive frame support cutting. Either that, or it hangs too low.
Proper way would be to go through radiator sopport opening, but due to length of those EBAY interccolers, the bend would have to be very sharp. In other words, can't be mandrel-formed, and therefore can't be mass-produced cheapely. Here's an example of hand-made pipe to fit standard ebay 12"/24"/3" or 4" core (31" end tank to end tank). You can see that making one takes time, and since most of those EBAY sellers make money because all the products they sell are standard and produced in great quantities, you will not see a piping kit to fir EBAY fmic on a 1G (unless I start making extras and posting then on ebay :D )

( I appologize to those who are sick and tired of seeing that picture so much, I'm not trying to show off with my work, just trying to reach as many people as possible)

Regards,
Paul.

edit: By the way, to clear things up, I run 12X24X4 core ebay FMIC myself, and love it.

Newlogics, isn't there a way to go around the end and do a 180 with a Ubend?

The IC I just bought is 30" end to end, 9" tall. I thought it'd be a better fit behind the 1g bumper and be able to keep the crash bar and bumper support...

What size are the bolts that hold the bumper on? Mine are rusted to hell and it probably would be a decent idea to get new ones from the hardware store just in case, or just replace them all. Looks like a 12mm?

Frame on a 1G doesn't have nice cut-out like a 2G, so you would either have to heavily cut the beam/sidewall, or run the pipe underneath, wich would make it way too low.

In other words us 1g guys are out of gas with these ssautochrome kits unless hella fabing is done. Especially if you want to keep the crash beam.

i think that i might have a couple of fixes for this problem, when i start installing it i will definately tell you everything i did, unless ofcourse it is impossible to insatall but nothing ever is. but rest assure that i am not going to say something like, "hey guys i have an easy fix, just get the endtanks rewelded and it will bolt right up." LOL, im gonna try doing it so that we can all install it easily.
later

I helped a guy make a piping kit for a 1g. he sells them on ebay
(item number 8039252547 ) and I did not have to cut any of my frame. The piping went around the frame on the driver side with no cutting. And the piping on the passenger side can go two different ways. thru the stock upper pipe location where the stock intercooler is, or you can come up by where your maf sensor is. I used a 24/12/3 (31" end to end)intercooler from ebay, and it is great. You could use a 9" tall intercooler, and not have to cut your metal bumper. this is not the short route kit like the one on this thread, but I did not notice any lag or poor throtle response, infact, I had a lot better responce than the intercooler I had on the car before, and it was smaller. I thought it was easy to pipe a 1g with minimum fabbing. i just want you 1g guys to know that you can get a kit to go on the car that doesn't take a lot of cutting. It will have to be around the frame though, unless you spend a lot more $$. :talon:

Helpful post. How thick is that core in the pics? It looks like you had to hack up the crash beam to tuck it behind there due to the height.
Does that kit come with a 1g bov flange?

I did have to cut the metal bumper to get it to clear that big core, but i was not planning to keep the metal bumper. I was going to put this same kit on my buddies 1g, and he wanted the crash bumper, so i cut it so we would have it for his car. you can avoid cutting it, if you get a smaller core of about 9", or if you have tools to cut, and don't mind cutting, then you can fit the big core in there as well.
This core is 3" thick. You can get a 1g bov flange, or a greddy bov flange. He might have more flanges. This kit has real nice beads on each pipe, and this guy ships quick, and can give you specific lengths if you need them. :talon:

Glad it was what you were looking for. if you need anymore pictures or info, let me know. :talon:

How about where you mounted it? Granted mine is a 9" tall, but I am curious. It's always great to see lots of different ways to do it so you can do the best!

Here are some pics of where i mounted it. It was rock solid with these. You could use thicker brackets if you want, but I never had any problems with it. I have this same core on my 2g now, using the same type brackets, and no problems.:talon:
