Lets talk Ebay FMIC. Especially if you have one.

I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

Megan FMIC

No name brand but has the standard psi and efficiency spill

Street Imports FMIC

XOXO Core but has good feedback on the core

I picked up a 2g FMIC kit from Fatboy Garage and the upper IC would not work at all not even close I had to cut it in two places and use a 45* Coupling (hacked stock IC pipe) to make it work. The rest of the pipes were okay, but I guess I got what I paid for. I'm going to turn up the boost to 1 bar this week end so we'll see it the core is junk or not. I'll try to get some pics of the hack job on the upper IC pipe

I used to beable to hold 18psi now it drops to 15psi.I also logged a few runs and i flow 1.5less lb/min with this kit.It could be cause of boost drop but ill tell you right now im not thrilled.

there is no way you could get a 3lb drop from putting a FMIC on. you got leaks somewhere

I didn't notice anythin except my car running better. DSMLink logged my highest flow at 40.3 lb/min!!!! That's the highest I've ever seen it. Stock cams, stock 2g mani, pte 50. Since my boostgauge seems to be off, I say I've been running 21-24 Psi on 91 pump no or min. knock. You have a leak somewhere. Check the couplers and tighten up the t-bolt clamps.

Ugh Dammit, the coupler I had isn't long enough....Go figure.. Where is the cheapest place to find another 2.5" just a tad bit longer than the ones that came with the kit?

I also just got the black bar that runs across the top of the bumper opening...It wasn't that bad... I also did a test fit with teh front bumper cover and the sides of the opening are hitting teh core...Did you guys have to trim that too?

You have pressure drop because the SS FMIC is too much for your small turbo. T25 or 14B owners should expect pressure drop and the solution would be to buy a small fmic or keep the SMIC.
The SS FMIC does work great for bigger turbos though. I should know cus I have good numbers to prove it :thumb: Am I the first to dyno it ? :shhh:

Greddy, is that fmic you have in the avatar the Greddy 24r? God those are so sexy on our cars. I like to be able to see a little endtank, but I don't like the small ones that they were selling on ebay that had like 2" of endtank on each side :(

Now don't get me wrong, for I cannot complain because of the price, the SS Auto looks kick ass too, but I'd just like to be able to see a little endtank like the Greddy 24r

LOL, now your picking appearance over performance? I wouldve sold you my greddy 24R :tease: :p

ROFL Nahhh I don't think I could deal with that long of piping LOL I thought about going with the 24r but I got to thinking about how long it actually is. Hey Greddy, How did you cut your front bumper cover so clean? I noticed that your black bar is gone, but you don't have slats missing out of the side of the bumper? Just IM me if you don't wanna explain/tell on here.

I ordered a longer one off of ebay form verocious motorsports. I got everything to fit with the couplers that came with it, but the clamps were hanging off of the end of the couplers(UICP). So I got this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8037174874

Well i found a couple of leaks at a coupler.I dont know if anyone else has had this problem but my tb elbow pipe where the welds are,it leaks i guess thats ss for ya.

So your thinking the 14b cant flow enough air to fill the fmic. That makes sense to me.Would that be why i lost 1.5lb/min when I installed this.My plans are for a e16g is that turbo gonna flow enough air for this fmic. Thanks

The FMIC IS NOT to big for a 14b, think about the actual volume that a FMIC adds compared to the volume of air that a turbo moves...it's miniscule.

A perfect Example would be arctictsi's car, he runs a Massive FMIC with 3" piping on a 14b and runs low 12's...

Agreed, the decreased overall air volume due to the short route piping makes up for the increased intercooler volume.

Did you remember to install the gasket back? Did you also remember to tighten the lower right TB nut?

I ran a 14b on a 24/12/3 intercooler with 2.5 piping going the long route around frame, and I had no problems with pressure drop. I don't think there is a big difference between the short or long route piping. Maybe a little response, but nothing major. I didn't notice anything. :talon:
