Let's talk about evo turbos on dsms

Update, so here we go.
I got my hands on a evo8 turbo in great shape with an o2 housing.
Tomorrow I will be ordering a "custom" manifold. Don't worry it's not expensive. So if this all bolts together well then the only issue is a downpipe.
I will bolt it up to see if it fits, but I can't decide if I should take off my big turbo in favor for this little one. I might just see if I can get it all to fit and sell it, still very undecided.
Does anyone think a -4an feed for the evo8 turbo is too big?
 
EVO IX turbo hits hard, trust me on that one. My neighbors EVO IX with nothing but a boost controller, air filter, e-prom reflash, and turboback exhaust pulls extremely hard coming on boost. I'm almost embarassed my DSM takes more alot more mods to surpass it, then again a few of my mods are stock parts off an EVO.

I'd imagine a bigger compressor housing and arguably higher flower turbine housing would help topend horsepower. The only reason I like this idea, coming off an EVO3 myself, is because of the potential of slapping in an EVO style FP green with stock EVO like spool.

That depends on where the oil source is.

Forced Performance states this directly on the page for their Evo Oil Filter Housing Line Kit:

"Relocating the oil supply to the oil filter housing allows the turbocharger to be fed by a more stable and consistent source. This source is much higher pressure than required by the turbocharger (can be over 150psi), so our line kit includes a inline filter that also features the appropriate size restrictor to limit the pressure at the turbo to a maximum of 70psi hot oil pressure."
 
That depends on where the oil source is.

My oil pressure gauge reaches about 100psi when WOT, so maybe I'll have to go 3an instead of 4an. Or maybe 3an and a restrictor?

Ok, I ordered my manifold, but I won't get to play with it until the season is over. I want to track my car as it is first.

My good friend Clint has one on his 2G. He made his own manifold using a DSM head flange and a Evo 8 turbo flange and used 304 stainless Weld-el's and straight tube. The turbo faces the passenger side, and uses an FP intake pipe and 2G MAF.

He MIG'ed his manifold, so it isn't the prettiest, but it does function just fine. You can always run an adapter plate on a T3 manifold or on a Mitsu manifold and run it easily.
 
I have the 20g mounted on my evo 1. used parts from the TS setup from evo10. I will list what I feel are the differences between having evo style 16g and dsm style.

single scroll hits harder. but the statement will be deceiving to most. the twin scroll makes power several hundred rpm sooner so the "hit" is softened. in short the TS makes power sooner and when peak torque hits there will be less hit because it torqued up much sooner in the power band. TS makes the torque band broader.

for all out maxed out power my money is on single scroll. lucas has done more 400+ 16g/85 setups than anyone and he has stated the DSM (evo 3=dsm style) 16g seems to make a 20hp more for similar setup evo 8 16g

the larger compressor housing of evo 8/9 is better for pump gas numbers only. it removes a bit of heat but a good intercooler will nearly negate the difference. the smaller compressor cover makes torque sooner. air gets through it quicker at the expense of a little heat. this adds to the "hit" factor in statement above.

the TS does spool faster and transitions faster but with a little 16g the differences arent big. for most people this type of conversion is simply not worth it. the conversion is too complex.

I did it because I am a fanatic when it come to my cars. And I wanted to run the slightly larger turbo than the 16g which makes the differences between SC and TS more noticeable. the turbos being made for the evo 8/9 are really cream of the crop turbos. I wanted to use them on my DSM.

last if you were to do this I would suggest using the reverse rotation set and a custom manifold. this leaves you with the option of using all the slick evo turbos.

Manifold came in today and it's bolted up awaiting for test fitment. Now only if I had a car to test it on.....
 
Ok it bolts up, tried this on a 90. The o2 housing touches the plug on the alternator.
You will need a custom downpipe and you will need a half sized radiator. The turbo touches a full lenght radiator. This was on a 90 1g, so being that there is more room on this engine bay it probably won't fit in a 2g.
It sits on an angle like a 45* angle so there is lots of room by the water pipe.
If someone can take a megan o2 housing and cut and weld it the opposite direction that would help out a lot.

That's an AWD shell. The FWD 1g turbo has the motor/tranny sitting fartehr away from the radiator support by about 1.5" ;). A FWD guy might get away with just a slimfan or removing the fan if there's no a/c.
 
I got a pm back from Ron Shearer, both the head flanges are one in the same. Meaning the evo manifold will bolt right up to the 2g or 1g head.
Now I has an idea, since the turbo is backwards, what if someone with a cnc machine or some skills can make a plate out of steel say 3/4" thick to where 4 bolts will go up from the bottom of the turbo into the spacer. Then have holes in the spacer to where the manifold would bolt to it, but make it backwards this way you can turn the turbo around and it's facing the correct orentation. Slap on your intake, oil feed and make a oil drain. All you need is an o2 housing to bolt to our downpipe and it's a done deal.
It would be 2 custom pieces.
Then for the o2 housing, buy a megan o2 housing for a dsm and one for a evo. Cut and weld the 2 pieces together.

i havent read all the way down, but this does sound awesome. what if you left it facing the other side, and totally do a short fmic setup. the compressor outlet right into the driver side of the fmic, and out the passenger side like normal? im sure yo uwould need custom lines and stuff, but the exhaust already crosses under the car from left to right doesnt it? oh i read down more and back a few pages...holy crap you have to mod mounts and relocate accessories...maybe its not worth it...LOL

You could gain a lot of clearance running it the same orientation as on the evo. Switching to a different induction system (SD, GM maf) would be easy. There still wouldn't be a lot of room there even just putting the filter right on the turbo inlet.

Could you try mocking up what it would look like with the turbo turned? No need to bolt it up I just want to know how close it is to the alt.

Do you have any proof of this? I've owned several 1G AWD and FWD cars, and never noticed any difference in engine/trans placement in the bay. I know there are subtle differences in the mounts, but nothing that would add up to anywhere near 1.5".

You can do it with an evo manifold and turbo having it face the right side (inlet) but you would need a gm maf or speed density.

If you put a stock EVO8 turbo and manifold on a DSM with the compressor housing on the driver's side, you'll need to relocate your alternator and eliminate power steering, and the manifold will need a 1"+ spacer to the head for the comp. housing to clear the balance shaft bump in the block.

Bottom line, any way you slice it, it's not worth the effort when the EVO3 16g can do exactly the same thing and bolt right in. Gamble seems to agree as the setup is for sale already. :shhh:

I didn't take pics before the car got hauled away. But I have a post where I found this out a while back. My 1990 FWD turbo has the motor sit farther back than the AWD:

. . . Seams logical too since the front to rear weight is already messed up with a FWD car as it is.
 
I just picked up an EVO VIII turbo complete with the coolant lines, oil return line, 02 housing, exhaust manifold, actuator and the intake elbow for $200. Its clean and came off a car that had around 30,000 miles on it.

The turbo will be used on a 6 bolt 4G63 that will be swapped into a Mitsu Mighty Max pickup, so it will be used in a custom RWD setup. Ill post up some pics and will try to visit this thread in order to update the progress as well as give some specs and measurements of how things fit and what lines up, etc.

The reason behind this turbocharger is that for starters it cost less then even a used EVO III 16G and much less then a new one ($600 ~). Its in much better shape then the 14B that came with the engine and the flow is much greater then that of the EVO III 16G. Also in a RWD Mighty Max pickup it should put out more then enough power to spin the tires.

Interesting, I'm doing the same, and I have all the stuff to do it. I just haven't decided how I am going to prevent the compressor from hitting the block yet. :)

Oh, and the 14B spins tires very well, so the 10.5 EVOVIII turbo should obliterate them.

Seems that the evo 8-9 turbo should fit nice with a different shaped manifold?

Someone with some fabbing skills should be able to make one and complete the install??:hellyeah:

My buddy with an evo 9 just picked up a FP Red and 5k worth of other evo goodies from Bushur and he gave me first dibbs on his stock evo stuff.:D So basically I am thinking of this verry seriously..

He should get his goodies in the mail soon, so when that happens I am going to mock up the turbo and go to the drawing board to fab a manifold and downpipe for my 6bolt that in my garage. Hopefully I can utilize my Megan Racing 3inch DP for this idea??

So lets get some more idea's flowing on this topic guys!!!!!!!!!:aha:
 
How about this idea.

If someone were to run a Gm 3inch mas sensor, and relocate the alternator, then run a smaller type cone filter off the comp housing of the evo 9 turbo, then make the custom down pipe... That should do the trick??

I mean, mount the turbo in its traditional way, and being how the alternator would be in the way, relocate it and run a filter off the comp housing.. And custom make a down pipe, and lower inter cooler pipe.. Seems like a good start to me?? Am I wrong here??:hmm:
