Lets see some custom air ducting

For people that have gone fmic, have you tried routing the intake pipe to stock side mount location? Im waiting on the ups man to show up with my fmic/ turbo/sd senors/random shit.. Suppose to be here an hour ago :banghead: With that said, when I install everything ill take a few logs with stock side mount airflow, fmic + hotintake airflow/ fmic + smic intake Let me know if its worth my time posting results.

I know people have done that on the site, and that's what I was planning to do when I install the GM MAF

With that said, I would be interested in your results since I plan to move my intake to that location as well

Cowl induction not extraction people. I have posted this before and I will post it again. This is not pressure, this is air velocity or how fast air is moving over the car. The body is a Lotus Elise or Exige.

Any time air has to change direction, it faces a restriction which slows it down. When air is slowed down, a pressure is created. If that pressure is higher than the pressure in the engine bay, then it will flow into the engine bay. If your pressure is that high in the engine bay that air still flows out, then you have other issues, hence the factory seal on the back of the hood.

As for ducting your front mount to your radiator, this would be ideal assuming you can keep the engine bay air pressure lower than what is in front of the radiator and the front mount. Fluids naturally move from high pressure to low pressure so the greater the pressure differential, the greater the efficiency of a heat exchanger. If you want the air pressure to be reduced in the engine bay, look no further than an evo. The natural bump and the small spoiler on the hood is by far a way better design than just cutting holes in the hood (not putting down the vents seen above, those have a design to them). There is also a really good tilted radiator thread on here where the op ducts right out the hood.

Very well said! This is exactly what I was going for when I did my duct exiting out the hood.

Sealing off the FMIC and rad to the front nose of the car is great for cooling and will certainly help, but like you said it won't want to flow well if the engine bay pressure is too high. Also, doing this will likely cause most of the radiator "exhaust" air to exit under the engine bay from underneath the car. As you can imagine, this is HORRIBLE aerodynamically, and causes a significant amount of front lift. The duct I created along with a front splitter that extends back as far as my rules class allows (to front wheel centreline) will force air through the FMIC and rad without causing any frontal lift, and hopefully will create significant front downforce.

Here's the link to page 3 of my thread which has pics of the hood duct for reference. I've still yet to finish the final iteration of the ducting to the nose, but I'll update the thread when I do.

I have never seen people make "fresh air" so complicated before. Whether it's ducting, venting.... holy over-engineering. The only idea I got from this thread is how to mount a functional front tow hook on my car, and that's only cause I saw TSIawd's pics, haha.

Call it over-engineered until the first time you try "real" racing in a DSM with a FMIC and without this ducting. In about 3 laps, you'll be in the pits with your hood up, wishing you had tried some of the ideas in this thread. :)

Rallyracing can full your radiator, oil cooler and FMIC w/ mud rendering them ineffective.

Hillclimbing on real mountains like Pikes Peak at 14,000 feet where the air is so thin you'll overheat running the boost we do w/o ducting and venting.

I would love to see this basic design applied to a 1g. (HINT!)

The post-radiator to hood duct for my 1g has been in design phase (in my head) for a few years. It won't actually happen until I get a 2-pass side tank radiator with the built in oil cooler. This way the upper radiator hose isn't in the way/exposed to vandalism.

Yes such a radiator is available, I haven't had the funds to purchase one as of yet.

My FMIC/pre-radiator ducting really just prevents side spillage and like TSIAWD666's setup, allows airflow past the intercooler so the radiator (and A/C condenser) actually gets some non-heated airflow too.

Glad i found this thread. Ill be doing some ducting/sealing this weekend. My temps are fine but it cant hurt to force a bit more extra air through the IC, AC condenser, and radiator.

Off topic: Lando, you have the car im seriously thinking of buying. I love the genesis. Is there a tuning community being built up around it like there is for dsm's? I know its still a young platform but damn, that is a car i would sell the eclipse for i think. RWD 2L?? Perfect. How do you like it so far?

My buddy has been asking for days when am I going to upload these. I guess it is time :thumb:

Wrapped the lower intercooler piping, external wg dump tube, custom heatshield (card board pieces for cutouts).

Next pic is the j-pipe wrapped as well.

Then full shot.

I plan to do the downpipe as well, I would need to buy more wrap though ><

Back to ducting, I went to lowes. They have this foam strip that is pretty thick. Air conditioning weather strip is what it is. $3 and some change. Lazy man ducting is what I call it. It seals the gaps inbetween the radiator and fmic as well. Cake work.

Strut brace wrapped in electrical tape? Is this a FREE MOD I am unaware of?

And did you really mount your license plate over the beautiful Eagle?...

Strut brace wrapped in electrical tape? Is this a FREE MOD I am unaware of?

Must be. It was the very first thing I did when installing mine.
No one likes arching and sparking off the positive batt. terminal. Especially not with so many pictures of DSMs burning to the ground because of exactly that - contact between the pos. terminal and a STB.

Lulz at all the posts going "ducting is an over-engineered waste and 18" of foam will cause way too much restriction".

Hey I was wondering if anyone had any new stuff to add to this thread? I found it by searching google here this morning and have really been amazed at some of the stuff I've seen here.

I like the idea of creating ducts at the former driving light locations. It could be done on the rear of the bumper to make it nice and clean. Then seal around the I/C and I would think it would help quite a bit.
