I can think of other ways that would do a very nice job, but how they cut a piece of pipe isn't really important.

this is the responce to the above
It is to me, since I built my own and it was a huge pain to get a nice fit.

slowgsr, there's a lot of ways to fit pipe connections, tools you can buy and even build yourself (sorta like the "spagetti pipe fitting" thread)

autronic DSM knows how time consuming this can be, i can tell LOL (BTW... just re-tuned the autronic in my buddies 99 GSX..which unit you running and how you liking it's features and controls for the DSM? i was kinda frustrated with the SM2 or 4 something - haven't seen the unit in a while, just the serial cable LOL (IIRC) )

But in all honesty, this is where the saying "you get what you pay for" was orginated. Some people dont' get the cost of some one hand forming a one-off piece (even copies once assembly jigs are made), the only way you end up with a fit that nice is through years of pipe fitting and TIG welding (and knowing their importance to each other - esp. in SS )

And that's because the ONLY way to get fits that nice, is to rough cut it to a marked position you came up with by eye or fitting tooling which originated in the "pipe fitters" world ( but it can be done several ways) and then use belt sanders, die grinders with sanding drums and other variouse hand/bench tools to smooth it right to where you want it.. thus the MAN HOURS involved in a piece with a lot of tight fitment and welding of this caliber is why you pay (and i'm just roughing out numbers) but 60 for an ebay and 175 for a handmade unit

the china ones are usually all cut on CNC laser or 5 axis mills or water jets (but very price stuff), then either machine welded or welded by a mass of slave laborors LOL and often made of infderior materials

As for getting the pretty welds... fitment is first, back gassing or solarflux-b is second and then to be honest the sch 10 is easier to get purdy than the sch 40 stuff because it takes less heat input to make the weld..the perfect spots of heat are the silver, the blue and pinks are the progression past the perfect temp, but only slightly. then your grey looking stuff is where you got it too damn hot and burned some elements out of the alloy that makes up SS.

Now i'm not claiming to be as good, and i'm very impressed with MAPs work and i've talked to chris on the phone when i was building my new engine (got him by accident there's 2 of em working there) and he's a really nice guy, and when i can buy something or have to buy something i can't fab or make myself, that's who i call

Now... YOu guys need another fab guy? I"m not consistantly THAT damn good on my SS welds, but i make up for it in milling, but make me do it for 8 hours a day for a few weeks compared to the hit and miss SS work i get now and i will be... YOu ever need a quality guy who has work ethic you just don't find much anymore, you let me know. I'd be proud to sit in the back cutting, fitting, milling, welding or operating a lathe which i've been doing all of it since high school, and spend from morning till late at night on one of the three 5 days a week anyway LOL damn divorce 2 years back cost me my shop, and forced me to close my other business she was a partner of... Now working out of a new location which is my home as well AND having to rename my company has really hurt my income and amount of work i get and take

map makes great cutom parts, teir fabricators are awesome as well as the customer service that why i pretty much only spen my money with them
