So I ran across a problem after I installed my new Harmonic Balancer/Crank Pulley. When I started the car, I heard a knocking noise then immediately turned off my car. Before the install I never have heard this noise, so I was wondering if this could be one of the balance shafts? The lower timing cover towards the back of the motor is where I am hearing the noise!

Can you guys help me resolve this problem, I will be taking the Timing cover off when i get off of work tonight.
Also I know it isn't a rod bearing, the noise isn't coming from the main engine area. I will try to reply asap I am at work ATM.

Installing the pulley is the ONLY thing you did ? OEM pulley ? Sounds like a pulley rib hitting plastic.
Yes this was the only thing I did the the motor. Its all stock.
Yea it sounds like the fins are rubbing, Check the cover to see if its chewed up and adjust it.
If so how Would you adjust it, I have never removed the timing cover.

did you loosen any of the lower timing cover bolts for some reason and forget to put them back ? Just taking a pulley off and putting one on shouldn't mess with anything, unless you messed with something else. Did you line up that 5th hole with the timing sprocket so its sitting how it should be ?

By 5th hole, I hope you mean the tiny one. If so yes I lined it up perfeCtly. No I didn't touch a single timing cover bolt.

Then take it back off and see what's worn away, if anything. There should be marks somewhere from whatever was hitting... let me know what you find!

You could just turn the crank pulley by hand with 1/2" breaker bar and see what happens. It should be obvious whatever it is.

You must have left a wrench on a pulley or something, when putting the belts back together. Dig in there and find out what the heck it is. Make sure everything's tight, alternator, p/s, a/c, etc.

I checked for tools but I will do again. Lets say all of that comes out fine, what else should inlook for?
I

Let's not guess or assume, check all that out then we'll move on. Plus more people will be on after work to give more ideas.

well, what'd you find ? i'm turning blue holding my breath!
Sorry man it was storming hardcore last night so I went to sleep
I saw a little chunk missing on the cover abs trimmed out the bottom. I checked the area around the belts and saw nothing. I will start it in a little

^yeah theres a difference between OEM AND OE.

Oem= from mitsu

There are just some things tou shouldnt buy from autozone etc.

Harmonic balancer is one of them, same with the timing belt, and a few other things.

Personally for me, it's mitsu parts,
Or well known race brands that have been tried and true

It was an OEM replacement, I trimmed a little of the plastic around the pulley and it seemed to quiet down. I will grind down the rest tomorrow and make another soundclip.
I am currently uploading a video to youtube because i found a littl squeak noise on the timing side.
Oem as in from the mitsubishi dealer, or an oem replacement from an auto parts store.
This is from the auto parts store.[DOUBLEPOST=1407893142][/DOUBLEPOST]
Yes three pulley is a direct o.e.m. replacement. Only thing different is there are more holes on front of it than the old one.

Those "notches" or "extra holes" as you're calling them, are just where they balanced it. Instead of adding weights (like they do when they balance your tires), they take material away from a pulley.
