Ok, So this past week My back tires blew out, broke my trailing bar, cracked my radiator, broke a O2 sensor, and cracked my piping to my intercooler.. needless to say that lowering springs are the dumbest things ever. After that all happened I was SOOOO close to selling my dsm and being done with it. But then I decided that I love it to much, and its time to upgrade and baby it a little. Right now its damn near all stock, to my knowledge.
With that being said... I wanna go faster.
First off, I got the stock turbo on this thing. I wanna go bigger but not to big to the point where ill have to do a bunch of engine mods and stuff or risk blowing up my engine. so pretty much the next bigger sized turbo from stock.
I need a new intercooler, this is also stock. The pipe that goes to the top of the intercooler is cracked (dont ask how) and is letting out boost like no other. so I figure a new one with new piping would probably be for the best
So those are the two things I would like suggestions on.. I have money, not a crazy lot. But some. So go ahead and throw out your suggestions for each if you want to include sites, links, ect. Feel free! Also if your reading this and you have a used one of them, Ill gladly consider buyin whatever you may have! :thumb:

Based on your goals I would go with the following:
a 14b turbo
Extreme PSi 14b/16g install kit
stock SMIC
MBC
a new hard UICP
something to tune with

As long as you keep your boost below 15 PSI, you will not have to worry about any major engine or fuel system mods.

I agree with both posts above. If you don't want to worry about fuel upgrades 14b is a great choice. Look for them in the classifieds. But for the price of front mount kits these days (less than $300) I would say keep that as an option. But then if you don't plan on getting other mods the performance gain wouldn't be significant. Anyways I rocked the T25 with a front mount for years :hellyeah:

IF you do get a front mount, try to get the j-pipe at the same time, from the same company, if it isn't already included in the kit. Also note what modifications the kit requires to install properly.

Sorry about your mishap! Great time to upgrade :)

Best/

Wow man that sucks . I'm trying to get my car ready for the ICC this year. I hope I still see your car around (maybe at the ICC?). If you need any help, just ask.

To start, you should get a turbo along the lines of a s16g, b16g, e316g, 14b, etc. I would recommend without a doubt an ic upgrade. My damn stock piping was so bad it would pop off under med load for too long (car stalls... and stuck until pipe is fixed, not fun). I got an hks ssqv (v2), and it works great. Unlike most others... i still we recommend the GReddy FMIC kit (only the big one though). It does a great job of cooling, but only buy it for a good price (obviously not 1 gees for a tube and fin ic when you can get a VRSF for 350 with a jpipe, but that requires much more cuttingand loss of fogs :|) If you are feeling adventurous though, a holset turbo is really cheap and you could get a smaller one to be safe. You only have to worry about a manifold, oil line, and return line for those. Main points: MHI turbo (maybe even a good used 20g would be nice for you), and a better ic (definitely get a FMIC). (also, a BOV upgrade would be beneficial because the 2g bov's are leaky shit).

A FMIC would be overkill with a 14b at around stock boost. It will actuallt hinder performance by creating increased lag times. I would advise against a FMIC unless you are going for higher boost levels (closer to 20 PSI) and upgrading your fuel system.

I run a b16g on 12-15 psi and there is a HUGE difference over that stock pos piping. I will NEVER GO BACK.

That is not true at all. The factory smic is marginal at even stock boost.

if you saw a big difference from just the piping, you most likely had a boost leak with the stock piping. on my old gst the car felt about the same before and after a fmic, with no other mods changed.
To the op, i would invest in a FMIC either way, because you'll want one some day and you might as well get it sooner and not need it then later and wish you bought one. Im assuming that you'll have an upgraded turbo before the FMIC.

If the OP REALLY want's an FMIC, I would suggest a smaller one for your goals. Like the ETS street kit, or the Mishimoto Z line.

WOW guys! Thanks for all the quick responses on here. Shame theres some arguing about whats better.. I didnt mean to cause conflict by this post. But so far what ive gotten out of it is that: a 14g turbo would be best? (maybe a 16g?) And A SMALL FMIC with hard piping? Also does anyone know if turbo timers are worth it?

None of us are mad or arguing here(at least I hope not). There are just some differen't opinions, and I respect their opinions. I stuck with my SMIC with a 14b on 14-16 PSI (boost creep) and I have no issues. If you want to spend the extra cash on a FMIC, that would work for the same setup too.

What exactly are your goals with the car? A few extra ponies from stock and call it good, or a few extra ponies for now and going for more later?

If it's a few extra horses and be done, I would get exactly what I said in post #3 and a small front mount if you want.

If you plan to go for more later on, I would go with all in post #3 but instead consider a small 16G or E3 16G, front mount, and fuel system upgrades, with the addition of a 3" exhaust if you dont have one already. Also some sort of tuning solution or have it tuned for you.

Turbo timers are good only if you can't idle the car for a few minutes yourself(late for class or work)

When installing the 14b/16g don't connect the water lines. It'll make it much cleaner and easier to work on. No need to worry about cooling, just let it idle after spirited driving.

Punishment makes a good cheap fmic kit. Once in a while they go on sale for $275. I'd keep the stock side mount until the sale.

No discussion about the OP's question is necessary. This topic has been covered out in the Newbie Forums so much it has it's own tech guide, which was linked to in the second post.

OP, next time you have a question do the research yourself. That's why we've got a SEARCH feature on our website, it isn't there for others to use FOR YOU. If you want to upgrade your stock 2g then follow the upgrade path that the site members and staff have taken the time to put together.
