I found this intercooler on ebay for $195 buy it now. Notice the internal fins and how unrestrictive they are. size of the core varies, but I liked the 28x9.5x2.75. What do you guys think?
it wouldnt let me post the pics but heres a link.......

Only bad thing is no has used one yet so there's no real feedback on the quality or function, just numbers to compair. It's hard to say on the mass produced ebay ICs.

Can somebody post pictures of the internal fins of the johnnyracecar IC. I know that there is a picture on the ebay auctions, but that pictures looks like crap. Can somebody get a more quality shot?

Thanks

Xmas came early for me. Got my FMIC in and my U bends from RRE at the same time. I will be doing a Tech Article on the install with short route piping in the next week or 2. :D
BTW, excellent packaging and quality. :D

where did you get that blue silicone hose from?
I got some from another eBay vendor named lylehowell. I'm very happy with it. Right now he only seems to have 2.25" ID hose for sale in straight lengths, but I think he usually has 2.5" as well:

I also like another place called hightempsilicone. They also have a separate web site.

How the heck am I supposed to clean it? I don't want to bend any fins.

By no means I am an expert on fmic's but from what I have read you have to find a balance between cooling and flow. The jrc core looks like it will cool very well but will not flow as much as a bar and plate style like in this auction. Where the bar and plate will flow great but not cool as well. This intercooler "to me" looks like a good intercooler for a car built mainly for track use as it will need more time to cool after runs. Also the bars are spaced apart pretty far so that should mean even less cooling.

Just my .02

You dont have the option to make short route plumbing now, unless you plan on rebuilding the endtanks on that intercooler.

That's basically what I will be doing. I'll be posting pics as soon as I can of the install.

Nothing says you can't do it, you just have to have some hella sharp 90* turns right at the tanks.

If you wanted a true short route settup, the intercooler's end tanks would have to be set up like a PTT or Buschur Kit. As the intercooler you have sits now, you will never come close in terms of pipe length to a true short route kit like the above mentioned ones.

1) Yes, a FMIC WILL do a 14b a lot of good, and will give you more of an atvantage when you upgrade to a 16G.
2) The core this thread refers to would be a good size for a 14B/16G 25x~8x~3
3) JR IC uses a bar and plate core and the JRC uses a tube/fin core. Bar and plate is supposed to be better but there aren't any numbers to compair besides price. The JR costs almost twice as much after shipping. I don't think the difference in flow/psi drop warrents the rediculous price difference, but if you've got nothing better to spend the money on go for it.

I agree that this front mount will do good for a little turbo, but when you get a compressor with some decent flow, the ineficiency of this intercooler will begin to hold you back. Bar and plate cores are much more eficient than tube and fin, and very often flow more at the same time. Ask Shep, who runs an off the shelf bar and plate kit, what he thinks, Ask Dave Buschur, hell, ask and serios DSM tuner which type of intercooler core is VASTLY superior. I garuntee you the answer will be unanimus. All the big tuner shops sell bar and plate type intercoolers for a reason....

how do you guys think this ic would fair on a 50trim or something slightly larger?

"Yes, however most people can use a tube and fin of equil size and not notice any difference. Lets say your 26x12x3.5 intercooler is tube and fin and flows 600cfm. Thats enough for 450whp. If your bar and plate it's 780cfm which is enough for 525whp. Unless your exceeding 450whp on the bar and plate intercooler your not really getting any benefit from it. I use this example as it's typically the size most of us use more or less.

Honestly for 450whp and less a tube and fin will work just as good. They both cool the air well and tube and fin is a hell of a lot cheaper than bar and plate. With all that said, I have bar and plate Spearco on my car."

As for the "little turbo" theory, you really have no idea unless you try it. Peronally on a 20psi WOT run, I'll get out and feel the front of the I/C. About 1/4 of the core feels warm to the touch and the rest is icy so I would say it can handle more than a 16G. That's obviously not the best way to judge an intercooler but it's all I can do without test equipment. After using this thing, I feel this cooler is very capible, more so than what was first expected.

I can not even argue with the price, for a little turbo, it is a good buy. For anything Bigger then an EVO 16g, I would stay away. One thing for sure, and damn thing will be better than the stock side mount. Here is what is on my car

http://www.dsmtuners.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=14431

Basically the BR Race core intercooler. This pig is big enough to cool any amount of hp you want to throw at it, and short route piping to boot. I could run 22 inefficient psi on a small 16g on pump with no knock.

Fortunatle for the rest of the DSM community I am now looking to sell it cheap. :|

(shameless plug)

I never posted a shot of the front of the car with the bumper back on. install pics were posts 187 and 188. Still might cut the black trim off.

Lee, I was going to cut the trimming off also but I saw that if I did then the top of the FMIC would be exposed. Does yours sit higher?
