I bought a topline gasket kit second hand new off a member on here. When I got it, I noticed the head gasket wasn't in the best shape. Is this still able to be used? Or should I get a different one?

Another gasket I had a question about was the exhaust manifold gasket. I've never seen one like this so I didn't know if this gasket will be alright to use.

What is your HP goal?

If you are stockish, the HG should work, the damage is in a non critical area.

If you are over stock, get a Fel-pro 9627 PT HG, about $40

I don't really have a hp goal. The car is used for autox and will be running a T28 with 850cc injectors. I also have arp's.

Set that topline gasket to the side, and get the felpro.

With what you are doing the few extra dollars spent on the Fel-pro will be worth it.

Also why did you pull the head? Blown HG? Bent valves?

Blown head gasket. So I guess my money was well wasted on this kit.

Phishy, I will hook you up again sir. I have a brand new head gasket with your name on it. Hit the PM button.

PM sent!

So I've been trying to figure out what I actually got in this kit. I was told the number on the kit was HSMI23. When I received the kit, it seems like I got a mixture of two kits. One number is CBSMI23N and the other is HSMI23N. I called Topline to figure out what I actually have and I guess it is the kit for the 7 bolt. It is the top set and the bottom set. However, there's a bunch of stuff missing.

The topline gasket has not been reviewed much or at all, and with what most DSM'ers put the engine through, I tend to want to use what I know, so thats what I recommend.

If you were a box stock, DD or a NA 4g engine, I would say install the HG and go on.

But with the racing abuse you want to dish out from time to time, is why I say go fel-pro.

Since you suffered a blown HG, check the head for flat and proper surface finish.

Yeah I understand thanks for the advice. The head is already surfaced by a local machine shop.

Hey, Phish, can you take a pic of what components were in the kit? Having a mixture of what appears to be two kits is not uncommon, as the early six and seven bolt 4G63 kits come with stuff to do either motor and even come with some non turbo stuff. I personally wouldnt use the headgaskets in the kits, nor the valve stem seals, and you can toss the oil pan gasket in the trash as well since the 4G63 oil pan is not designed for a gasket, but RTV. There is nothing wrong with buying a kit like this and saving a ton of money, and buying a Felrpo headgasket to replace the cheapo one that comes in the kit still saves a nice chunk of change. I have used a variety of "off brand" kits myself with no trouble at all and the first thing I do when I open her up is toss the HG and oil pan gasket in the trash:thumb:
