Is this flywheel good?

I bought a Fidanza aluminum flywheel from someone used. I cleaned it up and verified it to be Fidanza. However, these chips and gouges in the flywheel concern me. Is it safe to run it?

I would think that it'd be ok as long as you get a new surface disc for it. Looks like someone's clutch hub shredded on them and chipped some stuff up.

I'm thinking about taking my files and going to work on it. I don't want its structural integrity compromised cause of these gouges. I took off the old surface disk cause it was worn down to the top of the screws.

you can Buff/filr the gougues smooth, Personally I do not think it will hurt one way or the other.

Check the ring gear for damaged teeth, That would be my big concern.
After you install the new clutch face, find a local machine shop that does spin balancing, and have them check the balance of the flywheel, you may want the clutch disk and plate bolted to the flywheel when you do.
Around here, Pensacola,Fla. it is about $25.00 to have your flywheel balanced.

The ring gear also has some gouges and chips. I count 20 of them. They're not on the teeth itself but the side of the gear.

lightly file the chips/gouges in the teeth. it will keep you from tearing up the starter, and keep starting the car quiet.

as long as it is not the teeth itself, and just the side of the gear you should be ok

I would be more worried about the balance of the flywheel then the gouges themselfs.

The significant flaws that make a flywheel junk won't show up in pictures. Have a machinist check it, preferably one who has Zyglow or other nonferrous crack detection equipment. Check your yellow pages for "Non-Destructive Testing" and if you have a lab nearby, they might be able to do a quick check on it for you at a rate.

God.. wouldn't that suck...


Anyway, I just went through nearly the same thing with my flywheel and I was told the same thing. I went to a machine shop, had them surface it, and it works perfect.

Originally I put the flywheel on after lightly sanding it, wired the engine to start, and it made a really low, weird grinding noise because the balance was a bit off.

But yeah. 20-25 bucks should have that thing cleaned right up.

Makes sense. Fluorescent detection could work as well. I had to do some NDT work at school. It be sweet if I could use the lab myself.

I would personally not use that flywheel. The gouges and nics look pretty bad, and a good deal isn't worth riskings some spendy parts. If you are going to do an auto to manual swap, just spend the $150 for a new flywheel. Thats my opinion, but good luck with your car.

I would take it to a shop to get it magna fluxed(sp) to see if there are more cracks that are not visible to the naked eye. Last thing you want to do is install it only to have chunks let go while you are driving.

It's an aluminum flywheel meaning it's nonferrous meaning Magnaflux won't do anything.
