is this flywheel surfaceable

The cracks don't look that bad. As long as it can be machined out, you'll be fine.

Did you run a 6 or 4 puck disc with that flywheel?

If you ever plan to put any power to it, I would replace it. I have seen a few 12sec and faster dsm's that had flywheels like that explode and try to cut the car in half. Just because those cracks disappear when surfaced doesnt mean they arent still there. Its just more of a chance than I would take.

I dont know what you plan on doing with it - but I would toss it and get a new one. Its hard to tell with a picture, though - take it the the guy that would resurface the flywheel and ask him if they are too deep to machine out.

Use it if you dont like wasting money. Will preform the same after it is mechined as it would new. It is not broken. If it needs .0006 or less of mechineing its not going to make a difference and is not going to make a flywheel "brake or fall apart.

You know this statement could be the cause of a death to whoever is sitting in the passenger seat? Did you miss the part about how an exploding flywheel can and will try to cut the car in half. Im sure someone can post a couple of video links to show the carnage because it has been discussed her before.

Those cracks are very evident in the pic which are more than .006" deep. The only way I would use it is first to magnaflux the backside(engine side) of the flywheel. If it shows any cracks, trash it. If it looks good, surface it and then magnaflux the disc surface. If it shows any cracks that seemed to disappear with the surface job, trash it. If all is good, reuse it. After you spent all the $ to do this, you could have purchased a new flywheel.

Being a machinist, I can tell you that those cracks are pretty extreme and may disappear visually when it is resurfaced but will probably still show themselves when magged.

I guess I don't get how a piece of solid steel explodes without any chemicals. Most of the time when something goes through the bell housing its from improper installation. Apparently it has happened before so sorry for the confusion. LOL and im the guy with a scatter shield too.

Heat checking and stress risers. Overheating the surface of the flywheel can cause the surface to crack before it can successfully carry the heat through the forging. Further mis-use will exacerbate the condition, and once you have a crack, it will tend to grow and grow. If they're shallow enough, it may be possible to machine them and the damaged area clean, but flywheels are just too cheap and too crucial to fiddly-dick around with.

Thats not the greatest pic, but, you kinda dead on with the concept. After all that you could have a bought a new flyhweel. In this case, I suggest getting a Fidanza flywheel, any question about the contact surface has a $80 solution. However, Fidanza flywheels are more of a Road Race flywheel then drag race.

Come on now, you know my car works just fine daily driving or drag racing with the fidanza. You can ask most anyone on the team because most of them have driven it. They are all amazed at how easy it takes off or launches even with the fidanza, big turbo and fair size cams.:sneaky:
