Is my axle seal in too far (pics inside)

I'm battling a tranny leak and I may have found the problem. I just recently put in new axle seals and the passenger side still seems to leak. After searching a bit I'm thinking that I may have put the seal in the tranny a bit too far. I put the seal in flush with the tranny but in another thread they said its not supposed to be flush and its supposed to stick out of the tranny maybe an 1/8". I know the axle is in all the way cause I could feel it clip in like its supposed to and I can not pull it out without using a prybar.

As you can see from both pics the axle seal doesn't stick out of the tranny at all. These pics were taking from the engine bay with the battery removed if that matters at all.

Is this whats causing my leak problem?

I have to let my passenger side seal stick out a bit or it leaks but make sure the seal is undamaged.

You may have to use a red scotchbrite on the axle to give the new seal a place to run in on. We do this on all vehicles that go through our service department unless its getting a new axle shaft aswell. Not a single leaker yet!

Also, dont forget to grease the seal lip before sliding the axle in. This will help with initial run in of the seal to insure it doesn't see a dry run in which could overheat and deform the seal or rip it.

Looks like it's not in all the way. Are you sure the seal.... will, wait, probably need pix of the seal so I can confirm what the problem is.

If you talking about the axle its def in all the way. I can fell the circlip grab and click when I push it in.

I did grease the seal before sliding the axle in. I will most likely be pulling the axle and seal out today and I'll give them both a good looking over. I'll post up some more pics if I see anything that concerns me.

did you ind a resolution for this problem. I as well have been battling the exact same issue. i keep installing new axle seals flush against the tranny and they still leak.

The seal has been leaking for years since the time shep rebuild it back in 06'. Ive installed it very carefully, and also have used seal installers. ive installed multiple axle seals in other dsms and also axles succesfully. I have also installed hundreds of other seals in different manufacturers vehicles with success. For some odd reason , I always get some funky problem with my own DSM!

I did fix this issue.

I purchased another new oem seal and I polished the axle real good where the seal sits on it and then greased the axle and slid the new seal carefully onto the axle and used the axle to push the seal into the tranny. Its been 2 years since I posted this and the axle seal is still dry.

After you pushed the new axle seal with the axle itself, did the axle seal sit flush with the trany or did it stick out 1/8th of a inch like others were saying? Funny to say that because the drivers axle seal never leaked on me or anyother DSM (ive worked on) and those axle seals cup "out" a little bit.
