first off my name is ryan i just baught a 91 gsx. i will be the 3rd owner. the person befor me had is since 92. i have a few questions. the vehicle has been sitting for the good part of the last year. i was told the battery is dead and i am charging it right now. besides doing a compression test is there any other things i should look for before driving this thing off. there is no milky liquid in the valve cover. i am going to do a compression test as soon as the battery is charged. there is no major oil build up on the engine. all hoses and vac lines seem to be good with no cracking or disconections. i am not the most knowlegable person in the dsm comunity but i do know a few things baout cars. pls if there is any info you could help me with regarding starting a dsm that has sat for a while let me know. i plan on searching the forums all night but i would like a heads up thank you.
p.s. pls dont flame me.

Welcome to the forums!

I would recommend the following;

Drain the gas!
Change fuel filter
Oil & filter
Belts ( they tend to dry rot while sitting)
plugs & wires

hey man congrats on owning a 1g have fun with it and as far as you questions def change the belts out as they are known to go bad on our cars and since yours has sat a while its a real good idea to get on it i would do all your maintenance stuff plugs wires belts oil change all that stuff compression test do a boost leak test to make sure you dont have any boost leaks and if all checks out good have fun driving it and modding it but make sure you do maitenance before mods dont want to ruin the car before you get to have fun with it

+1 to everything force_feed has mentioned. also when it does come time to start make sure you crank it with out fuel and spark to build some oil pressure to start with. that head has been dry for a long time!!!

You can do this by pulling the relay for the fuel injectors, located on the positive battery cable, you'll have to pull it anyway when doing a compression test so that might be enough cranking. Also check out the upgrade paths, but always be sure to start with maintenance on these cars or you'll be out of a lot more money (or a car) than you want to be.

thank you for all the welcomes and advice. i was planning on driving the car from the sellers house to my house possible mile through town/side streets. i planned on doing all the routine maintenance once i got it to my house. i am just wondering what should i do before i bring it to my house. anything that dont require many tools or time. i planned on dumping a bottle of oil into the valve cover, checking the compression, and possibly changing the air filter. i dont want to spend all day at some random guys house just want to get the car to my house. but again thank you for the comments i plan on learning as much as possible. im coming over from the 240sx world and awd is something i need in my neck of the woods with all the snow we get in the winter.

get some snow tires and keep the boost down, it'll be a half way decent winter car. mine is absolutley not streetable in even 2inchs of snow. the more you mod the less you will winter drive the beast!!!:D

Check for all the above things force feed said, but since you are at another seller's house, check tire pressure, oil level, power steering level, coolant level, clutch fluid level, brake fluid level, compression and boost leaks.
It's what i can think of off the top of my head.
When you get it home do all the maintenance and a fresh oil change.

silly question- you say its only a mile or so from the seller to your house?? dont you have AAA or a roadside plan on your insurance( if you dont-get one now with the new purchase :D ) why dont you just tow the car, it cannot cost that much 60 bucks?(free if you have the above mentioned) that way you aren't under the gun at this dude's house. get it outta there!!!

LOL no kiddin, if it was me I'd just wait till like 1-2am and have a friend pull it with a chain to your house. It will most likely be ok to drive it, but if you're really worried about it, why bother?

Also another item that I have not seen that could use the change up would be the pcv valve. I know that they go out and it may have gone out on the car while it was sitting there or before it was parked. Don't want to have the gases staying in the engine.

im not concerned about driving it home day or night. i dont have insurnce right now and i dont have aaa im going to check a few things and start it up after turning it over a few times and see what happenes if it runs and is ok at idle ill try bringing it home.
