I am in the middle of installing my EVO mani/Big16g/3 in o2 eliminator setup and ran into 2 broken studs in the head when I was pulling the manifold. We are going to try and EZ out them with the head in the car friday (wife won't let me bond with my car on turkey day). My question specifically is, do i have to go back with the factory studs or can I pull all the studs and use "regular" bolts from ARP or some other similar source?

Thanks.

I know that mine was a pain in the butt... I initially tried the easyout and it just ended up breaking in the stud. Which was aweful since the easy out was hardened and broke at an angle so it was very difficult to drill out. I ended up using a carbide cutting bit for my dremel and ground out the bolt and the easyout a little at a time. The carbide bit actually seized in between the bolt and the easyout and snapped in half. Funny story though, that broken carbide bit made short work of the easyout and the bolt. It fell apart like oldman said and I still had good enough threads for the new ssstuds to grab onto. (ssstuds.com not sstuds.com, don't make the same mistake I did :barf: )

My friend has a 99 GST and he has 2 broken exhaust manifold studs and it broke in half so the half is stuck in the head... is there any other way of getting it out beside taking it to the shop? Ive used a heli coil before but he needs this fixed asap and most shops are closed today... any ideas?

Use an Easy Out. A heli coil is used to repair messed up threads not to pull out broken off bolts and studs.
Most easy outs out will will not get the job done, most will break off making things 10x times more difficult. The best solution is to CAREFULLY drill all the way through the center of the stud, slowly increase the drill size until the stud falls apart. If you're careful enough, the threads will still be intact.

I havent had to use anything other than an easy out, but that is definately a useful trick that I will have to remember. You should throw that bit of information in with the tech article as a tip for if an easy out doesnt get the job done. :thumb:

If the easy out doesn't do the job, it's already too late, it would be impossible to drill through the broken easy out. I don't know how many times you have had success with an esay out but the forum is littered with stories of broken easy outs, myself have gone through 4 different brand types of easy outs all ending in failure.
