I just acquired a 1992 laser rs turbo awd with 23k miles. I also have the complete service records that I will try to summarize the important parts below... I also have some questions about certain things like recalls and things i find odd. I dont have time to post the whole history tonight, probably will around tuesday.

About the timing belt... i think it was done at 12k in 1996 LOL. obvoisly it is due asap. what about everything else? water pump? tensioner? are those necessary too? (Bbelt of course is...)

thanks. Ill post back with more records later.

I didnt even think to look. sorry, and the answer is really clear LOL. for those that see this, extreme psi > DSMgraveyard. I just thought most smaller businesses were more personal and more effective, this must be an example of when thats clearly not the case.

sorry for the side step, and back to the original topic.

Fuel filters are supposed to be changed every year or every 30,000 miles. I'd say change it.

You could.. It won't hurt anything but I would check the injectors.. If the fuel filter has not been changed in a while it will have lost it's effectiveness.. Allowing sediment pass the filter itself.

Make sure they are not clogged as a side effect from this..

EDIT:

5 Gallons is WAY over kill, I would, at most run maybe a quarter gallong through.. That is still alot. The fuel filter is much to close to the beginning of the system for a purge to actually be effective.

...and rare to see those leather wrapped 'bat handle' shifter knobs that still have the leather remaining on the knob....Mine finally fell apart, thus turned it into a standard knob.

Really these are rare? I just gave a mint one away the a couple weeks ago... .

I was thinking about going to shell with a few gas cans, getting some 93 gas, like maybe 5 or so gallons, and "purging" the fuel system while i have the fuel filter off...

good idea? bad idea? another way?

also in the maintenence records, the car wouldnt start and the cause was a failed fuel pump. the fuel was also found contaminated (if you look in my maintenence records notes i posted earlier...) in november2008 the clutch was replaced at 23,035 and in september2009 the pump failed at 23,063. so i guess 27 miles in almost a year will do it... anyways when i test drove it, everything was fine and it started right up multiple times. i guess 200 miles in under 2 years is ok? will be doing fuel filter and purge anyway....

Sh!t. so i guess I have to replace the filter, purge, and replace again? could I possibly use a tube as a filter bypass to just pump fuel through the system up through the fuel rail connection? and where is the easiest connection to undo closest to the engine?

Edit,
Im lost now, the filter is close to the tank? were you talking about the filter being useless, and ruining the injectors? or the filter being usless during a purge?

The injectors, or fuel rail would be the closest to the Engine. But no, I would not change the fuel filter twice. Maybe once... Wait a couple months then do it again.

When you can change the fuel filter.. If it is not completely nasty upon removal (When you remove the fuel filter give it a good couple bangs against the ground)

Then pour out a sample and inspect how dirty the fuel is that comes out... If it is clear... You can be pretty sure your injectors will be ok as well..

But if it is really dark and loaded with sediment I would disconnect the fuel rail but Note:

Becareful not to ruin the injector seals or the tips of the injectors themselves.

Once disconnected you can check for flow.

Pull the pump an look in the tank for sediment if there is, Drop the tank an clean it out with some fresh gas.

After doing that if you had any sediment in there I would get two filters...

Run the pump like you were saying before maybe a gallon of fuel.

Then install the new Fuel filter.

Also I would pull the injectors and have them Cleaned... .

Run a couple tanks threw it an for good measure then replace the filter again...

I wouldn't do anything else, Low mileage older cars that have been sitting either have Gas tanks full of turpentine like varnish crap or sugar 99% of the time or both... .

odds are it doesnt have contaminants, not that im eliminating it, but the last time the tank was contaminated was 2 years ago and 200 miles ago... i will be doing some good measure flushing though.
