Hello I am new to the DSM community and I have no knowledge about the community or the car.

This is my first car that I want to get into and my goal is to have a fun and reliable car as my daily at least for now.

I have a few questions I would like for someone to answer.

1. Is the Mitsubishi eclipse 2 gen reliable.

2. How much money do I need to get around 300 horsepower and later down the line 500 horsepower.

3. Are mods expensive for this car.

4. common issues with the eclipse 2 gen.

5. Things to look out for when buying a eclipse 2 gen.

There are two motors. 420a and 4g63t. Both are fine but at this age it's difficult to make comments about reliability.
2. How much money do I need to get around 300 horsepower and later down the line 500 horsepower.
$$$ alone is only part of the equation. Impossible to answer without more information about goals and what car you choose.
3. Are mods expensive for this car.
Expense is relative. This is your first car? I would say yes. It's expensive.
4. common issues with the eclipse 2 gen.
Also depends on which model yiu choose.
5. Things to look out for when buying a eclipse 2 gen.
Rust. Avoid it at all costs.

Welcome aboard.
Now that all being said there are 100 other things you should know.
Look through this site and read. Lots and lots of good information on this site.
Would I recommend a dsm as a first car? No. On any car this old you will need to do some some maintenance and repairs and if you have no skills it will be expensive no matter what brand or model you choose. Dsm has a reputation for being cheap to go fast. That's is very dependent on the car, the mechanic and skill level. When they were new, yes they responded well to inexpensive mods. Now not so much as things have worn out. Do not expect to make 300hp on a worn out motor and drivetrain. At least not for very long. At this point many dsms are in need of restoration which makes sense given the newest one is 23 yrs old.

To piggy back off of @pauleyman, you will need to either be a skilled (or willing to learn) mechanic or have deep pockets if you plan on buying and modifying a 2g Eclipse. Parts are getting harder to find and the aftermarket scene is dying out due to a lack of demand. 500hp is easily attainable with the 4g63 engine (turbo charged models - GST and GSX), but not without sufficient mods.

The huge positive is this forum. The folks on here represent decades of expertise and experience, and any problem or question you could possibly come up with has been addressed on here over the years. This forum has racers, fabricators, Mitsu mechanics, specialists, and hobbyists of all kinds. Plus this community is all about preserving the cars and helping folks out. We won't think for you, but we will gladly help you with advice, guidance, and answers. So if you want to venture into the 2G Eclipse world, you'll find no better place to get help when you need it.
