I made one of my DSM's all electric about three years ago, have over 3,000 miles on it. Am wondering if anyone else has done it. The black one in my avatar is the all electric, the blue one gas with some modest mods. If you want to see some pictures of it, goto http://www.diyelectriccar.com/garage/cars/263, its under my name in the garage section. I would like to hear you're input.

Yes there are a couple others on, just wondering about here on dsmtuners. I also just wanted to show others who havent seen the otherside of modding something new and different. It took me several years to build, i started back before the others did, some things are ALOT easier now with kits that help out with alot of the fabrication and not having to engineer parts, like the adapter plate, the hub for the flywheel, the engine mount, how to get the powersteering to work right, and the brakes. Of course now there are lithium batteries that are much much cheaper and better, which would extend the range i have to 100 miles at 55. As an approximation the batteries to make my car do what it does now in lithium would have cost me 35,000 bucks when i started, they are now about 5,000. And they didnt have chargers for them, so many people cooked there batteries with regular chargers. Im still using wallyworld cheapo batteries, thats why my short range, but with my new DIY controller it drives nice now, even with the extra weight. BTW lithiums are three times more powerful at 1/3 the weight also. And they will last 20 years if properly taken care of. Its a little crude yet, but it was built on a low budget, alot was made outta what i had lying around and surplus center purchases modded to work. Alot of R&D, if you think it looks crude now shoulda seen it in 2004 when i started.:aha:

For daily commutes it probably works great specially if you can get 100 miles out of it. I'd still want a fun gas car on the side though. Nice to know the price have gone down, guess the eclipse is a good base model considering there are quite a bit of rolling shells around from blown engines :p. I do like the idea though.

Ya, you still need a gas car. Thats why i have my laser(gas one, the blue one in avatar), the long ranges are its job, but grocerygetting and work is the electric. Not that you will save back all the work and money, its just i wanted to do something different kinda thing i guess. And its fun to drive at night down the highway, you can hear the crickets frogs etc... things you never think of normally. And the millions it seemed like, you cant do it, it will never work, then it works out, and it just keeps getting more and more refined as i go, its fun. The evgrin they call it. heh no green smiley, darn.
And yea its good to get out and just romp on the gas one once in a while, im a motorhead too.:)

Once I start working and making money I wanted to convert a 2g myself. I REALLY don't like the look they give to new electrics. Besides, if they ever start demanding people to drive electric cars, not everyone can/will be able to afford a new model. I'd rather convert a model I already love to death and at least have the looks of the car. Definitely nice to see people with money have the same ideas my broke-ass does LOL

HAHAH! nice, shoulda thought of that to start with:ohdamn:
It would be like the japanese car in cannonball run 2 then.:)

Yes lighter is better, but when your adding 1,000 lbs of lead, the sturdier chassy and beefier suspension and wheels/tires helps. And when you get up to speed, the low winddrag coefficient and low rolling resistace really helps. Many have done geo's and escorts, bah. But when you go through this much work, which would you want to show off. Plus I have always been a dsm fan. And yes, torque is instant, when using clutch its strange, used to spooling up the motor with gas/turbo, here its all right there, if you dump the clutch it feels like it wants to tear the front end off.

I am glad to see someone has done the hard work , I am thinking of doing it also.
I had an mx3 I was considering but it was an auto.
I have a 95 stick with an unknown motor and if it is bad I may go this route.
How much batteries cost when gas is 4 bucks a gallon seems trivial to me.
SLA's will go 5 years if taken care of properly. I dont have any faith in lithium however.
The large format NiMH batteries have worked far too well and are only available in japan of course.
