Let me start off by saying I new to the Engine World.. Ok now, I want to change my head gasket and paint my cover. Is their a thread or a vfaq on proper removal?this will be my first attempt and don't wanna fcuk things up...

Thanks

If you are new to engines, I am not sure you should attempt it. To take the head off is ALOT different than just the valve cover. The valve cover is just the bolts around it holding it on.(maybe 6 or 7). Taking a head off will require taking off power steering, etc. You would also have to put it back in time. If you think you can do it, but need better help, buy a hanes manual. It should help.

Listen to him if your new i can almost put money on it your going to have a horror story for us by the end of the job

There is probably a vfaq on the vfaq website. A Haynes manual, like previously mentioned, would help.

But if you are real new it may not be a job you want to take on alone.

+1

pulling a head off is not horrible but not fun. its the putting it back together that might get you. there are alot of trick and details to this project. i suggest not tackeling it alone. its way different then pulling a head off a chevy v8

If the headgasket is fine, leave it be. I also wouldn't reccomend taking it off unless you have an experienced person with you as you are asking how to take the valve cover off (just take all the bolts off that you see holding the valve cover down).

That's my advice and do a lot of reading about the DSM before you really start to do anything.

I suspect you meant to say valve cover gasket, not head gasket. Changing a head gasket should be done by an experienced person. If you don't get the timing right you can do significant and costly damage to the motor.

Changing the valve cover gasket is very straight forward. As previously stated, invest in a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual. All the info you need to do this is in there as well as in the tech section of the site. When reinstalling the valve cover do not over tighten the bolts. It's easy to crack the valve cover.

That's what I want to change... I have oil leaks around the seal.. Plus I would like to paint the cover. Sorry as I said I'm NEW to the engine world..

Well, it's not that hard to do, just take off all the bolts you see holding it down and if it's not moving easy, look for more. When you put them back on, just over hand tight with a nut driver is tight enough. It's roughly 5-10 inLb

You might want to take off your coil too, LOL? Its the 4 prong piece on top off the valve cover (it has the spark plug wires connected to it). There are 4 bolts (10mm) holding it onto the valve cover. Then there is a connector attached. The red slider on the connector gets slid over then you can pull it off (while squashing tab on connector. The red tab basically does not allow you to squash tab until you slide it over).

if your valve cover gasket is leaking, check in the spark plug holes for oil. If there is, use a air gun, and blow that oil out as good as you can. After ya have most of it out, you can remove the spark plugs and clean it out with a rag. Just would hate for you to have oil in there, then go to remove the plugs only to have that oil leak into the combustion chamber.
