Is it okay if I hit the rings around the axle that are connected to the transmission to lose it up and get the axle out?

The end of the axle is splined, and bathed in lube. It has a rubber lip seal that rides on the inner stub. Banging on it isn't necessary, and is only likely to break something. Use the method that pauleyman described. Long-shaft square shank screwdriver and crescent wrench on it by the handle. It really is so simple and works like a charm. Prying sideways is more challenging because there is little room to swing the prybar. You only need to compress the round wire circlip that rides in the slot at the axle end. it's seated in the differential inside the transmission. Hammering could actually wedge it in somehow that it may never come out.
