I'm sure this is a noob question, but I searched and couldn't find an answer.

I'm changing the hub but of course it's rust welded onto the axle, so the whole steering knuckle has to come off and I have to have the axle cut off just like I did on the passenger side.

My question is does the intermediate shaft have to come out too?

I removed the two intermediate shaft bolts but how or can I separate the axle from the from the shaft, at that gear? Or does the axle and shaft have to come out as an assembly and how would I do that? Just pull on the whole assembly b/c I don't see how to get a pry bar in there like I did on the passenger side?

Thanks in advance

You shouldn't have to separate the two axles, but if you must, there is a support bracket held on by two 14 mm bolts. Then tap the inner axle collar with a rubber mallet. It should slide right out of the transmission. Put the intermediate shaft in a vice, and beat the crap out of the outer axle to separate the two axles. Reassemble the new axle to the intermediate one and install as an assembly.

Edit: I just noticed you have a 2g. I don't know how true it is for you.

Ok so with the intermediate shaft bolts removed. I can simply pull out the entire axle and shaft assembly? There is no way to leave the shaft in place and just remove the axle on my 2g GSX. Sorry I didn't state that before.

Don't beat the crap out of it you could ruin the bearing inside that little bracket. It has a snap ring just like the axle that goes into the passenger side of the tranny. smack it hard whle in the vice then turn it 1/4 turn and continue hitting and turning 1/4 turn until it pops out
:aha:

Yes, you can leave the half shaft installed in the car held in with the 2 bolts to block. But I found that trying to seperate the axle from the half shaft was a headache, easier with it removed for more access. If you do end up removing the half shaft, removing the 2 bolts will allow the whole assembly to slide out with ease. But I'd recommend replacing the seal on the transmission for the half shaft if you have everything removed.

Good luck and when done update us and mark as resolved please:)

Thanks guys for all the info. I'll keep you updated and I'll be sure to mark it resolved when I'm done.

Hey guys quick side question. Does anyone know of a way to pop the ball joints without using that dang fork. I split every boot last time I did this. I thought I could use that autozone ball joint press but that's not going to work.

Thanks
