How to remove cam alignment dowel?

Does anyone know how to remove a cam alignment dowel pin? I have a vice grip with a slide hammer attachment. Is that the right tool? Can this be done with the cam in the engine or should I remove it? Does it come out easy?

I think i found it. There are special dowel pin puller tools with different collet sizes.

A dowel pin puller master set made it easy. Such as as this Cal-Van Tools 95400

There might be a less expensive trick, but I don't know it.

Vice-Grips, and tape up the rest of the area of the cam to keep from damaging it.
