How Hard Would This Be?

I found a 1991 Tsi Awd near my house, but a downside to me is that the car has a automatic transmission. I really want to get an idea of what this would cost me to purchase a 5spd and swap it myself, and what degree of difficulty would it be? The car is within my price range also, thats why it is so appealing to me!

Um, there are 2 threads within the last 3 days about this. It should be fairly simple to find.

Its not too bad. I converted mine from auto to manual. Its a fwd but awd shouldnt be too much harder. Tranny will probably be about 800-1000 used then you need the pedal assembly (hard part to install) then shifter and cables. Also need a clutch and flywheel. Total probably like 1500 I think. Also you need like a couple good weekends depending on how adept of a mechanic you are. Good luck and enjoy!

Yea, I would agree with just buying one that already is a 5spd. But, if you would rather do the work, you'll also need to get a 5spd ECU, b/c the automatic ECU will make your car run really rich.

There are sooo many dsm's out there just find one for a little more money that already has a manual and save yourself some time.

If he doesnt change anything to do with the ECU and injectors how would keeping the ECU that came with the car make him run rich?

Automatics come with 390's and a smaller turbo, the stock fuel map is a bit different. If you use that with 450's then its kind of the same effect as someone with a stock 5 spd, slapping in a set of 550cc injectors. Its still totally drivable but will run pretty rich.

should be fairly simple if you listen to everyone above and research
