On the 2.0 4G63 cars, the hump in the hood is necessary for the sheetmetal to clear the timing belt cover.

A vent in that location wouldn't serve much purpose; the timing belt rarely overheats ;)

drat, I was hoping it was for the turbo or something :) that would be great, the turbo sticking out of the hood.... talk about major cooling....

Nope; I meant Sheetmetal. i.e. body work, in this case the hood.

In other words, the hump in the hood is necessary for the 'hood' to clear the timing belt cover.

LOL do you even know what or where a turbo is ?

Ok I had read your post wrong and got confused. I re-read and realized that.

Sorry.

the bump on the na is to clear and give extra room for the battery correct?

No, it's there because on 2g's mitsu wanted to save a little $ by only making 1 kind of hood.

About the raised bump on the driver's side of the hood...is there any reason for that? I have seen some people cut the the front-making a hood scoop of sorts, but the only way that might be effective is for the NA DSMs because that is the location of the intake. A short ram intake could benefit from the cut in the bump, but what is its actual use?

The only thing the hood "bump" or "bulge" is there for is because mitsubishi found some way to "ghetto rig" the belts in a different order than domestic cars are, therefore creating the upper belt to be raised up and having to get the hood up like that. ive heard some people say mitsu does this also to give a more sporty look...i guess cars with flat hoods dont look as quick and sporty. keep in mind that i am just going by what some people have told me, i do not back any of this being true, i know things about my car and all, but dont really pay attention to why they have a hood bump instead of flattening the hood and creating a more flush designed hood on the car. dont take offense or try to argue with anything i said, cuz like i said, i am not backing it, i am just the relay man i guess.

the hood bulge is there so that the timing belt cover on the 4g63 can fit underneath..ex: aerogear makes the predator hood(no bulge) fits only the na/2g models not the turbo models

get it?

the bulge is there to clear the timing belt cover, a good deal of DSM motors do this, like the DOHC neon, it has the bulge on the other side of the hood though, I dont really like it, if I found a good aftermarket hood that fit the 1gs that looked good, I'd buy one

I agree, I think the hump is awesome looking. Looks fitting and sporty

I am sure it has been mentioned many times in the past, but another possible benefit of opening up the hood by the bulge would be to vent the hot engine air. Because of the airflow over the hood, a vacuum effect would most likely be created to help exhaust the heat. I don't think you would get much effect as a Ram Air setup from a surface opening, It would need to be scooped from above the hood. I know I have seen this mentioned by an "X"er at one point or another also.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

It would prolly help to cool things down if you put a small vent somewhere in front of or behind the bulge.

I think the hump looks good, it sets the car apart. Ive thought of the hood scoop but i think it would be hard due to the low slope of the hump.
