So this morning i replaced my leaking oil pan and return line, and let me tell you this thing was a bi*** to do on your own. took about 3 hours and a bunch of sweat and dirt. never do it on your own things a bi*** rather woulda paid $100 for labour to get it done at a shop.

The posters who mention that negativity breeds negativity....I can't argue with that. I guess that I need to look closer at myself from time to time. Yet, I like the OP's style. I don't like being politically correct, but as I live in an area where being political is king I often suffer for not following the herd.

It is unfortunate that everyone always has to be *right* these days. No room for admission of a mistake anymore like when I was growing up. Everything is black and white now and we are all so polarized.

Anyways,

Different strokes for different folks. I am a pessimist and research these days are showing that is actually a good thing. I like realists and consider the majority here to be invaluable even if we have different opinions.

Now OP, do come back.

Oh ok I gotcha. I think that some folks in the thread were trolling and/or let their emotions about DSMs get in the way. Kinda feels like the timeless debate about whether or not a DSM is reliable or not and the answer always comes down to whether or not you maintain the vehicle. I disagree. I bought my 1g to keep stock and commute with. Why am I so terrified even though I know that I will do everything right? Too many bad experiences. I don't care what anyone says, I don't forget my experiences. I am glad that you take pride in what you do and I am generally the same. I have just been jerking around with cars so long that sometimes (very rare) I have a hard time or wuss out.

On a side note, I have trained the wife to be my puppy dog and help me out. ROFL

It gets harder with kids though. Gotta wonder why I am still in this game and nearing 40 years of age. I can't drive fast in this State with it's archaic laws or risk going to jail for one day starting at 1 day for every mph over 80.

I think the 4g63 is just a habit for me. I just need that distraction sometimes.

Kids can be puppy dogs too.:thumb: Once they get a little older. Although, I remember my little brother "helping" my dad wash his truck when he was in dipers. Age ain't nothing but a number! Some people believe the DSM4LIFE. I just turned 24 and I feel like I will always have one of these cars around. First and last car? Maybe! It is mind clearing for me to be wrenching on a car. Funny thing is when I'm not I'm thinking of all the stuff I have left, LOL opposite effect.

To OP, don't loose faith in us, everyone has their moments!

Haha, yes they can be. My boy avoids me like the plague when I am wrenching though, but hopefully I can help him get into projects progressively. I do believe in DSM4LIFE. I have had some bad experiences over the years where my wallet was empty so I am making up for lost time I guess. DSM got me through my first divorce and my ex wife taking my kid away from me then making me pay her every month to do it with our screwed up sexist "family" law system. Everyone turned on me including "family" and "friends". Even man's best friend "my dog" was taken from me. I could no longer afford my DSM when it broke down and I had no place to live much less work on it. However, nothing could take away the DSM in my mind. :)

Kind of reminds me of that scene when they tried to reprogram Dr. Zarkov in the Flash Gordon movie. :)

Lol nice, yea you got to find some aspect that brings him in. Maybe electrical, or on tuning side. Kids like computers LOL. Then pull him into the rest of it. When I have kids, I'm going to cheat, you want a car to drive? Here's a shell, build it. Done. Sorry about all the stuff that went down, unfortunately that's life and you got to roll with the punches. But at least you can stay positive and there is a DSM that is there for you.

Yeah DSMs-Demanding Suitable Mechanics 4 LIFE ;)

Im glad he had the determination to finish what he started even though it was such a p.i.t.a. Props to you and hopefully this one task has not deterred you from doing your own wrenching. I stand by my previous statement about appreciating something more that you put together with your own two hands. That goes for everything not just cars

Most of us enjoy our day by working on our cars. You will never appreciate your car when all you do is swipe your credit card anytime something is wrong with it, or anytime to want to modify it. You appreciate it when you put the blood and sweat into making it what you want

agreed. took about 1.5 hours to pull my awd automatic trans in my car port. but man that darn oil pan. i got tired just thinking about pulling that thing off.

Now I see how people have such a high post count. It's really lame to post negative comments, that's what the hang out forum is for or Facebook for that matter. We all have been in this situation plenty of times. Who knows what the pervious owners did to the pan. Maybe he didn't have the proper tools or jack stands. Ever have to change your oil with it jacked up on the cross member? Big pita when you're in a tight spot. Granted he should of made the thread differently then he did but no excuse for some of you guys that have been on this site for a long time. Go talk bad about a Honda guy not a fellow dsm that's not the name of the game.

Okay, next time we will give him a blue ribbon and tell him how special he is.

Seriously, criticism helps more than any pat on the back ever will.

Not many people are gonna feel bad for someone with an oil pan problem. Suck it up, get it done. I'm sure most of us can think of at least a half dozen times when they working on their car and found it to be a huge PITA. Also, it's the internet. No need to get ones panties in a bunch.

Again, for emphasis, the main problem is the negativity put forth by the O.P. This is a straight forward job that many people will not have a problem with. Some, however, will have difficulty. There's no shame in taking the car to a reputable mechanic if you have neither the tools or confidence to attempt the job.

The problem, as I expressed earlier, is the O.P.'s need to blow the job out of proportion potentially scaring a newbie from trying this job for themselves in the future. This is a perfect job for someone adequately equipped to really get their hands dirty. Imagine if they decided it would be too hard based solely on discovering the "nightmare" the O.P. had and that he never should have done it for himself. WE all know a shop won't reseal a pan for just $100....Imagine that newbie caves and forks over his hard earned cash because this thread scared him away from the job?

Is resealing the oil pan somewhat involved for someone who hasn't done something similar before? Sure. You're likely going to be working on your back and sticking your hands and wrenches in some tight places. Oil is going to be dripping all over you. Your clothes will be filthy. Your hands will likely be a mix of sludge brown and obsidian black. But when you get it done, you'll feel as much like a champ as someone who's pulled an engine for the first time or rebuilt their own turbo. That feeling is what keeps this community going. No other platform has the same DIY mentality of the DSM community. Many other forums come to us for creative solutions to their particular problems.

This thread was brooding with negativity from the start. Thankfully, some of us have actually done something to try and turn that mentality around. Plenty of newbies and people with little automotive experience have asked redundant or rudimentary questions on this forum and got the help or direction they'd asked for. The O.P. asked no such question. His intention was simply to describe his negative feelings towards a job that a majority of this forums members(both noob and wiseman) will have no trouble completing so long as they set their mind too it. That has no place on this forum, especially in the newbie forum where many of our young/inexperienced members are just starting to get their feet wet with mechanics. We need to encourage that base of people to educate themselves, not scare them away to a garage. WE are what's keeping DSMs alive. That has always what's been our lifeblood.

lots of replies been busy getting this thing on the road but yeah, plain and simple just a pita for me and my buddy to fix. Im in canada so parts are hard to get for the oil pan, lots of waiting occurred paid insurance on a car that sat in my garage for a month dripping oil to the end of the garage. But yeah, im not really going to apologize for the thread im just saying i don't have a vast knowledge in cars in fact it was mainly my buddy doing and the previous owner just did some ridiculous things to oil pain and return line. Not everyone is a mechanic, i just didn't think you guys would even take this serious figured itd be like a "haha so what happened?". But anyways new to this forum just recently bought this car been driving 4dr family sedans since i first started driving. Hope some of the shitty replies don't represent all dsm owners, im just used to "haha" forums. Thanks for some of the advice, opening post was pretty lame but at the sametime im just getting a feel for the community still.

Yep, that is life and you gotta roll with the punches. I guess that is my purpose on this earth. Find out some of the traps that life has to offer and make sure that my kids don't fall into them.

I try to get him involved with my lesser vehicles and things that he can't do any damage on. He hates being my tool getter though haha. When I am under the car and ask for a wrench he is nowhere to be found. Smart kid. ROFL

i am shocked that a dsmer would not be able to do something as easy as changing an oil pan. its not like other vehicles where you have to pull the motor to pull the pan, just for an oil leak. that is why us dsmers own so many dsm's is because we find it so easy to work on our cars.

Page 4 in a day and a half, this must be the new hangout :) I'm surprised this thread haven't been closed yet :shhh:

Also, it's the internet. No need to get ones panties in a bunch.

If that was the case on this site I wouldn't of got suspended twice :D from my understanding we all are suppose to keep this site clean and more on a professional side. I'm not trying to be righteous I'm just saying, we all have been noobs at one point as some people still are. OP did the job and got it done so maybe some of you should have seen that side of it instead of seeing the fact that he was bitching how much of a PITA it was to do. Yes we all sometimes read something and think WTF but not always do we have to say something. Constructive criticism is one thing but straight up telling a guy he needs to find a different hobby is another. He don't need to find a different hobby because he got his hands dirty and got the job done, he needs to keep doing what he's doing with a little less bitching and a little more appreciation for the job done ;) If he is willing to work on his car and keep learning one day he will be giving the next guy advice on how to do something.

I just use the bathroom rug at that point.

I got a bad visual when you said this LOL

My friend, your only on your 8th post. If I was you I would retain my tongue a little bit (fingers in this case) ;) If anything you should be shocked that there were so many people willing to talk shit and possibly get policy reminders from the mods. You don't know that yet, you're still new on here, but if you keep it up I promises you will find out ;)

He hates being my tool getter though haha. When I am under the car and ask for a wrench he is nowhere to be found. Smart kid. ROFL

That is kids for you, I bet in some way that reminds you of you as a kid :) you just can't not love that innocent and yet sneaky way of thinking :D

Hahaahahaha, yes reminds me of myself today. I run when the boss comes!

Shop price is usually 75-125 per hour. If you are making that kind of money per hour, then you can be let the shop do it for you. Consider this when you think it is not worth your time.

Sometimes you have to pay for other people experience if you are not familiar with the work or have no skill. Some shops have tool you don't have.

There is a lot of hack mechanics out there. Even good shops have bad. Even good mechanics get too busy. Most mechanics that flag 10-15 bux per hour are not going to give a dang about your DSM. You are just another car that is in their way. Some shops are not familiar with 4g63 and will not take the time to do research how work on it. If you want to prevent dumb mistake, you need to do it yourself. At least when you screw it up, you will still have money to fix it. If they screw your engine up, they will just blame you for beating it up too hard.

Yea Gofer isn't the best job in the world, get them more involved or they will be bored. Although, I do hate being under something and getting out over and over again. LOL I usual grab a few sockets and take them with me. LOL

Right? Thats the reason I never want to get rid of it, I can do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to this car. I'm scared the next car won't be the same. However, with the knowledge I learned from my DSM, I am sure I can figure it out.:thumb:

I see no elitists here. Most of us picked up a wrench and figured shit out. And we managed to do it with out needing to post a thread bitching about how difficult it was.

It seriously is nothing more than removing a few bolts. If someone finds that difficult, well, then they probably should pick up a different hobby:aha:

This. I took my turbo off and put it back on in a weekend. The weekend before that, I had the intake manifold off. Was it a pain? Sure! Was it hard? You bet! Did it take a long time? Not too bad, but longer than I want to spend working on the car. Did I enjoy kneeling on top of the engine while hugging the manifold to get the nuts on the bottom? Heck no!

But when I was finished, and the car started back up again, and even ran better afterwards (minus the confusion from having hooked vacuum lines up backwards), it sure felt awesome knowing that I personally helped my car out. Now it helps me out. I spent the time to figure it out (and almost had to ask for help), and now I'm better for it.

Off topic, but this is an amazing screwdriver. Everyone should own one, because it's awesome and and fantastic and cooler than pickles.
