So this morning i replaced my leaking oil pan and return line, and let me tell you this thing was a bi*** to do on your own. took about 3 hours and a bunch of sweat and dirt. never do it on your own things a bi*** rather woulda paid $100 for labour to get it done at a shop.

OP how did you go about changing the pan? Did you try to use anything to hold the pan in place while you were driving in the screws? What made it such a pain in the ass for you? Look at it as a learning experience now you know what things you need to do to make the process smoother if you have to do it again sometime. I know I am always doing that on my car, things that use to take me hours to do now only tack a few minutes or something.

Hope you remembered to seal that new oil pan properly or your gonna be doing it all over again. All people who own a dsm should pride them selves while working on their cars making it there own unique project, not complaining about the simplest of tasks.

I have too much going on to worry about it when I can pay someone else to do it for me :)

I'd rather save thousands by not paying some clueless College dropout to screw up my car for me.

Not to toot my own horn, but I built my own DSM from the ground up. Everything from assembling the engine, to building the turbo setup, to street tuning the ECU. And not only is my horsepower and reliability much higher than most, the $ amount I have invested is also much lower than most. Correlation? I think so.

But that's just my opinion :)

Its one thing to just pay for your dsm, but to really enjoy and love your car you have to put some of your work into it. You will appreciate it so much more

Christ, when did you all become a bunch of elitists that were born with the knowledge of all things mechanical embedded in your brain.

Give me a break.

Elitist? Hardly.

Give a monkey a putty knife and an oil pan and he'll figure it out.

Nor do I find anything wrong with Sebba's statement. There's a difference between getting your feet wet, and soaking yourself and crying. IF you find the job hard, so be it, but to create a thread solely to cry about it is inviting criticism.

He can potentially discourage another person from picking up a wrench and doing this task by themselves because he found it too hard. His title specifically says "holy crap never replace your oil pan" . I find more harm in that.

This....

Let me tell a story. When i had my buddy put together my shortblock and we installed the new built motor, i notice a leak by the trans comming from the oil pan. (We used black rtv) well i was a real noob and i paid his friend that owned a small shop to re seal the pan, well inget it back, and guess what, spent 300 bucks and still leaked (black rtv). Did it my self a few months later with the guidance of another buddy... Problem solved. ( the right stuff) always take the time to make sure every detail is dome how YOU want it Always do your own work. If you dont feel comfortable with what you are doing, have a buddy or someone more experienced guide you. GUIDE not do it for you.

The point is not to be made by saying were all arrogant ass***** that know how to do everything with our eyes closed. The point is that posting a thread such as this on a car enthusiast forum filled with members who love nothing more to build their own cars and learn, is simply asking for scrutiny.

How could one post a thread to simply complain about the difficulty of a task and not expect to get flamed. I personally have too been building my car from the ground up not because I knew it all, but because I am dedicated enough to learn.

If the OP found the task difficult, perhaps he/she should have posted a thread asking others for better techniques to help make the task less strenuous. Then people would be happy to help instead of make fun of.

But thats my $.02

Cut the O.P. some slack.

It could have been his first time wrenching on a car there for it seemed like a pain in the ass.

Im sure we've all had something on the "to do list" for the dsm that was a pain in the ass. From a exhaust gasket that gets turned into a evening job extracting broken studs to taking off the oil pan.

The dropouts at dynotech tuning hasn't let me down yet :) . But seriously I tried my own work and messed up my car beyond belief and during a week I really needed it. I ended up fixing it and it felt good, but the time spent with the cost of having to miss work just wasn't worth it in my eyes. Since then I gave up on caring

And yet that's exactly the issue. Every single one of us has had those moments. How many threads do you see opened actively discouraging others from attempting the same task for themselves just because we found it hard or annoying? This is a very DIY oriented community and platform. The creation of this thread is entirely counterintuitive to those exact ideals.

There's no shame in taking your car to a reputable shop because you don't feel as if you can do it. Just don't come crying that you did and you hated it and should have paid someone else. I started my automotive journey many years back by wiring a radio in. Imagine if someone would have told me to just not do it as it was too hard... That's exactly what needs to be prevented here. This is a relatively straight forward job for a greenhorn to really get his/her hands dirty, especially on FWD models. It'd be a shame if they didn't attempt it because they discovered the O.P.'s thread.
