Many of you have contacted me about machining a Holset turbine housing using the Garrett T3 inlet flange. Most of you are using a Garrett non-turbo conversion kit or aftermarket manifold that uses this flange pattern. If you are still interested and are subsribed to this thread please contact me directly to place your order. We have completed the print and have these units scheduled to be machined in a few weeks. Thanks

Hi,

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but there has been a lot of interest in these turbo's. And I have a few questions or statements that need to be verified, before I search for the right turbo.

1) the H1C is simular to a HX-35, so I can get the same bulls eye DIY kit for the HX-35 and the H1C?

2) the H1E is simular to a HX-40, so I can use the same kit for both?

3) I still have a stock 7 bolt block, but I am rebuilding a 4g64. What will be the max boost I can run on street with 92 octane and strip with 100 - 114 race gas with my stock block? And same question but then for my rebuild 4g64.

4) In post #32, the chart shows that the max amount of boost with those HX35 is 20.5 psi. So, when we rebuilt one of those and install the DIY kit, is this boost level going to be our max? I am a little confused about this because bull's eye claims 30-35 psi on those turbo's. I am not familiar with the upgrades on those turbo's what bull's eye does. Can someone clarify this?

5) What is the minimum boost level with the bulls eye waste gate actuator?

Thanks for the information.

Sven

I'll answer what I can since we dont deal in the H1C or E stuff. The DIY kit for the 35 wont work for the 40 or visa versa. The turbine wheel is a different size. Most of our Holset customers can set the boost as low as 12-15, you shouldn't need to go any lower than that. Several customers have run in excess of 30 psi with this turbo and some diesel guys have been as high as 50 psi. Check back in this thread and watch some of the videos I put up.

Keep in mind the 549 whp at 20 psi was on the HX-40, this is quite a bit larger than the 35.
The HX-40 must flow a lot of cfm even at lower boost because similar turbos (gt35r, fp 3065) take 29-30psi to get those numbers.

Its the Map Width Enhancement groove. You can take identical compressor wheels and use the MWE housing and it will increase flow and efficiency by more than 10%

all the MWE groove is is a slot on the sides of the compressor wheels blades. It's a pretty simple thing. Instead of air only comeing from in front of the wheel it also can pull it from the side of it as well.

The H1C is an older model of the HX35. When holset cut the H1C for the HX35, they used the same turbine shaft and wheel, only they put a minutely larger compressor wheel and a better compressor housing.

the H1E is the older version of the HX40, but there are alot more variations on sizes of H1E's than Hx40's. Every HX40 is the same size, but the H1E has alot of different sizes. That's why if you want to use an H1E, you need to find out the size of its turbine wheel so you can buy the corresponding bullseye kit.

How about a twin scroll T4 inlet...

Seriously..

I just looked up how to convert kg/s to lb/min and am looking at some other turbos which should fit...

I'm not even going to tell how much casting a new housing would cost.

Alright.

T3 like your pic that a HX50 will bolt to.

I think the HX-50 turbine wheel is too big to fit our housing. Do you have any measurements?

I saw the specs for the hx55 the other day while searching, but I didn't save the page and I don't remember how I found it. Don't quote me on this, but I remember it in the 70's... maybe 72mm?

Hi,

This is a question for 1029TSG, is there any progress on building a housing for the HY35? I have been looking around and found more of those and in better condition then the HX35. Can you post some information about this, thanks.

Sven

Actually, the preliminary reports are that the HY should be able to work in our current casting. We will be making some print changes and machining a sample towards the end of the month. Stay tuned and I will update this thread as soon as have any more information.

Im glad you will be fabricating a housing for the HY-35 since here you have another customer. Please keep us updated on it. :thumb:

He is going to have a few updates..

Specs I measured on my H2C so far:

Assembly P/N: 3519091
Compressor inducer: 60mm
Compressor exducer: 86mm

I might get the turbine inducer/exducer later. The bolts are frozen up pretty good, so I may just leave it.

H1E:
Assembly P/N 3530994
Compressor inducer: 58.05mm
Compressor exducer: 81.57mm

Turbine side, again, is being a PITA. SO,we'll see if I get it apart.

sweet... Could you see if the H1E will bolt into the HX35 turbine housing if it turns out to be the same diameter shafts?

Finally got around to measuring my H1E and HX-35 turbine wheels today. Thought I was going to destroy the H1E as the turbine housing was pretty well rusted on. Took a blow torch, PB Blaster, a HUGH gear puller, and a 10 lbs. sledge hammer to get it off. That turbine housing is pretty useless now. Anyways. here is what I got.

HX-35W
Turbine exducer - 59.95mm
Turbine inducer - 69.71mm

H1E Assy# 3526361
Turbine exducer - 66.95mm
Turbine inducer - 75.55mm

I got the hardest part done. I'll measure the compressor wheels of both and post them up here. The H1E is the only unknown as far as compressor wheels goes. Was pretty down when I saw the H1E doesn't share the same turbine wheel. Going to cost me more money now for a different turbine houseing.

It looks like you have your inducer and exducer measurements flipped around. The inducer is the larger dimension on the turbine wheel. But that's ok, most of probably know what you meant. Its looks like the H1E is not going to work in either of our HX-35 or HX-40 turbine housings. The HX-40 is just under 2.50 inches on the exducer. So if my conversion is correct at 25.4, the 40 is at 63.5 mm. Now if there's a big demand for this exact turbine wheel, like 10 or more, we can make a machining change to accomodate this cartridge.

Well it's a PITA to hear that the HX-40 TH won't work without some machining. I'd definitly be a buyer of one if some more people would buy one. If not then I'll just have the HX-40 TH machined to fit.

I just finished taking the measurements of my HX-35 and H1E's compressor wheels. The HX-35 is kind of off cause it has an odd number of blades.

HX-35W (48 trim)
Compressor inducer - 52.69mm
Compressor exducer - 76.25mm

H1E (53 trim)
Compressor inducer - 59.93mm
Compressor exducer - 81.66mm

It appears the H2C is just a bigger HX-35. The inducer to exducer ratio is maintained. I've also put some pics up showing the differences between the compressor housing's and wheels.

maglin: you da man!

what did you use to measure the turbine wheel? is there any possibility of being +/- a few mm?

1029TSG, how far off are maglins H1E specs from an HX40's specs?

We have only measured turbine wheels in inches and the exducer of the 40 is just shy of 2.50". If one inch is 25.4 mm, then its around 63.5mm. If the H1E measures at nearly 67 then we have to make some changes to the print. The profile may also be different so we would need a new or nearly new turbine wheel to be sure. It also occured to me that this H1E wheel is larger than a Garrett P-trim, which is used by most of your 8 and 9 second DSM drag setups i.e. Sean Glazar. Are you sure you guys want to make 8-900 HP?

I do... I'm building a full blow drag car now... I'm going to be getting a 2G for my DD which will probably have my HX-35 or a 50 trim in it. And yes that turbine wheel is Fing big. I will clean up the turbine wheel tomarrow and shoot some pics of it as well. I know it's not new but we are not going to find any new H1E wheels around these boards. I know where I can get brand spanking new HX-40's for $400 straight from a cummins dealer. I might just end up picking one of those up if we are going to have problems with the H1E. Could be my H1E is just a real bastard child.

I used a digital Micromiter to measure the turbine and compressor wheels. It's a cheapy one so I have to go back and make sure that it's zeroed out. No way I'm off by mm's... the most I can be off is .03mm and that is almost nothing. The HX-35 compressor wheel inducer could be off by as much as .2-.3mm cause of the odd number of blades. I don't know a any good way to measure that with a MIC. I could get it's circrumfrance and then use the formula to get it's diamiter but it's almost irrelivant anyways.

You'll see some more pics tomarrow
