Hey guys,

Just wondering why the Holset turbo's are the new craze? Are MHI turbo's no longer readily available? I know that a few years ago, the trend was towards ebay turbo's direct from China... why the switch to Holset when 10 years ago nobody had heard of them?

Thanks,

Keith

in my opinion its because of the low cost and they are so easy to find now, along with many companys making housings and manifolds to make them a bolt on turbo. where else can you buy a turbo for $100 thats capable of putting your car into the 10s or lower

I guess I miss stated my question... why are they so readily available and cheap when they were not in the recent past? Were they always around and people didn't realize?

Just wondering what I am missing here :)

at this point most of the trucks they come off of (90s cummins) are getting turbo upgrades and modded, or ending up in junkyards , hence making the turbos more availible

I picked up a freshly rebuilt holset hx40 for 400, that's cheap compared the horsepower I can make with it.

I think it's mainly because until recently people didn't realize how much potential the turbos had when mated to a little 4-banger. Then, as people experimented it began to catch on, and just grew from there.

After what Tsunami in Japan caused all the Nuclear reactors to be closed Mitsubishi had to find more expensive alternatives to power. MHI literally used power from it's own nuclear reactor, hence why the impact is so large on ALL MHI products.

The Tsunami caused all kinds of problems for MHI's production but that is easily the most extreme. All of problems it's facing has driven up the cost of their products of course.

Holsets are very easy to find second hand, you aren't buying a new turbo by any means. The HX35, HY35, HX40, and even the HX55 (I read somewhere on there someone is actually using one in a build... it's going to be bad ass.) are all amazing turbos that easily bolt up onto a DSM. The biggest modifications you may have to make is denting a water pipe or getting new fans, otherwise they are a fairly typical bolt on.

BUT! If you want to talk about second hand turbos MHI turbos are still very competitive and of course able to be rebuilt. You can always find a 14b, 16g (In all of it's options), and 20g on here for a great price.

Don't forget if you ever need a turbine for your nuclear reactor MHI has your back.ROFL
