Help my buddy with timing

So I've never timed a car. My buddy paid to get his 91 talon tsi awd. Based on the 1g vfaq, it looks like the crank pulley has a notch and the oil pulley has a arrow. Based on the pics on vfaq the notch points at 2 and the arrow points at 11. When I towed my car back I looked and my arrow is at 3 and the notch is at 7. So is this totally wrong? Another thing I'm worried about is it started and idled with help, so did I hurt anything? It idled for 30 seconds. It has a bse as well.

That notch in the crank pulley has nothing to do with timing. That is just a chip in the pulley. The actual mark is in the separator plate between the balance shaft and timing sprocket.

The proper marks also don't line up every turn of the crank. They only line up every six turns. So once they line up they will do so again 6 turns later.

There is no way to tell anything whatsoever from the pictures that you posted.

If the ballance shafts were eliminated ..the oil sprocket mark means nothing..
Take the timing cover off and look for a timing plate behind the main sprocket.

If u followed everything in faq on how to install tbelt. And still nothing lines up. You have to make sure your at tdc compression stroke. If the cranks sprocket has been removed it is easy to install the timing plate at the crank backwards. This will mess everything up. Verify before even startng the car to avoid costly repairs.
