Hey guys,

i just recently rebuild my motor, had the the car running and now that car doesnt want to run. i finally got it running but it wont run on its own i need to give it gas in order for it to run. its making a ticking noise now while idling and speeds up when i give it gas.

i checked the compression and its 140 in all 4 cylinders, i checked the timing and i think its alittle off, but im not sure if its a little off would it make a ticking noise? ive got DSM link and the computer says the timing bounces from 5 - 15 degrees.

from the picture below can anyone tell me if this is my problem? (i have the crank set to top dead center.)

from that pic it looks like it jumped timing. The dowel pins should be at the 12 o'clock position, and the cam gear marks should be inline.

Your timing is definitely off based off the location of the dowel pins. DSMLink displays ignition timing, not cam timing.

Bouncing timing is normal, to check timing you have set the timing to base.

Read: Base Timing Adjustment

Its for a 1g, but the 2g do have the base timing connectors too. But you can't set the base timing, it's just for checking. You need a 1g CAS for setting base timing manualy.

thanks for all the help guys, im going to redo the timing probably today. Im woundering though with my timing out and my engine making a ticking noise do you thing i damaged anything? I never drove the car with the time out, the car has only tired to idle.

thanks again

Vern

if you damaged the valves you wouldnt have compression so you should be ok. Being one teeth off on the cams isnt going to destroy your engine just make sure you dont set it like 2-3 teeth off thats when stuff breaks!

I just replaced my water pump and the exhaust cam was off one tooth, ran it for about 15 minutes that way.So mines fine...........

I'd get that thing back in timing where it supposed to be - before you crank your motor over again. That ticking could be a valve barely 'kissing' the corner of the piston - not to bend it, but making slight metal to metal contact.
