Ok, i just got finished replacing the piston and head that got messed up, when i had this guy install my sbr stage 1 block, from being out of time, and putting everything back together...

i noticed that whenever #1 piston was at wot seemed to be TDC, the marks on the crank didnt come close to where they should be, probably from the guy before doing a hack job on my install

i lined up the oil pump pully and the balanced shaft pully and when with #1 at TDC, and tossed the timing belt on, making sure all the marks were still lined afterwards... i hand cranked it with a wrench a couple times to prime everything, and i didnt feel too much resistance. so i went to turn her on to see how she runs.. there was a tapping sound, after about 5secs hearnig that, i turned it off..

Im going on a hunch that its out of time.. Can a timing light be used to check the timing, or is just adjusting the timing without one going to work? if timing light, where can i find a tech fo how to work a timing light, and if not, how hard is this to do, and work are the steps i should take?

If you're thinking that the cam timing is still off then a timing light isn't going to help you. There's pretty much two different kinds of timing on an engine, cam timing, and ignition timing.

To make sure cam timing is right all you have to go by is the marks, and ignition timing requires the timing light.

well, i had a hairline crack on my instake cam gear, so i had to replace it.. i got an other exhaust gear and slapped it on... i put the pins on straight up.. the marks seem to line.... how hard is it to use a timing light, and anyone know where there's instructions on how to, or am i better off taking it to my local aaa mech shop and have them do it?

Paying for someone to check your timing is a COMPLETE waste of money.

Buy a timing light, clip it to the battery, clip the light's plug onto #1 plug wire, make sure its dark enough and point the gun down at the timing plate, adjust accordingly....thats all

honestly can be done in 30seconds
