i was looking at buying a car this would be my daily driver i have a 3g gt engine took a dump then got screwed mechanic run with money anyway i liked the acceleration which is why i want a gst really bad plus i like the pshh shound from the bov and they look so much better.

The problem is i dont have much money there for if i were to get a gst i would get one in not such great condition i heard this cars are not as reliable as the 3gs but i been reading the 2g gs is reliable this will be my only car(im a college student by the way)

so would you recomend a gs over a gst since its more reliable or will getting a gst in ok shape and keeping up with the maintnace be a good daily driver (i drive about 40 miles every day)

90% of the people on this will tell you to get the GST or GSX. not the GS.

as for reliability... both engines will be reliable, just depends on the owner and proper maintenance done.

If you ever want to make any real power, buy a GST, if you test drove the two of them the gs would be out of the picture. 4G63 powered cars are just as reliable as any other car, they just get a bad reputation since everyone mods the hell out of them and expects them to put up with it. If you keep up on the maintenance, you should be just fine! Don't buy a GS you will regret it.

If you are just going to drive it with no intentions of making it fast I would go with the GS. If you plan on making power go with the GST or GSX. Like nothingfiction said, as long as you take care of it either one will be reliable. Parts for the GS will be more easily available but the torbo models will be much easier to make tons of power. Just depends on what you plan to doing with it.

well for a year or so i plan on no modifications untill i get enough money for a second car so i was planning on buying a turbo for the gs because i thought it was more reliable then the gst since its less prone to crank walk but i think im getting a gst would an auto be as fun as standard i never driven automatic in my life i love shifting gears but cant find a gst thats standard...
will the acceleration feel the same even tho the rpms go down on their own at like 3 or 4?

the way i see it honestly... there is only ONE way to look at it. Forget about HP rating and such. Forget about how easy one or the other is to mod out. the Only thing that matters under all honesty is the drivetrain. is front wheel drive all that you need, or possibly had bad experience with all wheel drive transfer cases and whatever else have you? Do you want to go fast and have all of that power to the wheels? the true argument here is this...

All wheel drive VS. Front wheel drive.

Now no one, not even me will argue all wheel drive is better/faster.
But you have to look at yourself and what you want out of the car. if you get a RS/GS all wheel drive is totally out of the question. it is possible... but extremely highly unlikely. So far i have only seen ONE all wheel drive 420A (RS/GS Eclipse) and that took a lot of modification and time and money.
if you get a GSX it is already all wheel drive. and since it shares so many other things as the GST it would be far more easier to convert a GST into a GSX.

I have seen a couple of guys with RS/GS and they make loads of power with them (turbo'd). I guess your decision could depend on a couple of factors. What was said above about AWD and FWD is correct. It can depend on your money at the time. Some swear by the 420a, it is a reliable motor. The clutch replacement is way too expensive, but that is the way it is designed. Unfortunately, if you are to find a GST/GSX for cheap, it may have been horribly mistreated. I have NEVER had any issues with the motor in my 92 TSi AWD. It is rock solid. MY son had a 98 RS, except for the water-pump disintegrating (taking the timing belt and a few valves with it, this was the previous owners fault for not replacing it when the TB was replaced), it was very reliable and a blast to drive.

It really is up to you. You can spend just as much on a mistreated 4g63 to get it right as you would adding a turbo to a well maintained 420a.

I recommend getting a Gst, just find one with low miles I got my Gst for $2700 with 110k miles and it was more reliable than the Gs I used to own.

This is a key point. You can "supe-up" an RS/GS and still pay the lower insurance rates. It doesn't affect me at all since my rates are real low (31 bucks a month for a TSi AWD) cause I have a perfect record over 29 years of driving. BUt, under 25, and the insurance savings can easily make up for the higher cost of mods.

If you plan on building it go for the gs-t but even just for reliability there pretty equal. As long as you don't push the car you'll be fine with either.

Alot of awd guys will tell you to get a gsx, but if you low on cash, just get a gst. They are really fun, even if torque steer is a biatch some times. You wont be dissapointed with a gst.

Eh, it varies greatly. I did mine for about a grand with doing the work myself and piecing together a kit. You can buy cheap Ebay kits that I surely wouldn't fully trust for maybe 6-800 or you can get reputable kits for about 2k.

The 420A (GS) car would be great as a daily driver and pretty trouble free. It would also be easier on gas, since you won't be tempted to modify it for more power.

Like said, if you plan on doing some modifications, the 4g63 cars are typically the way to go. The reason for this is the huge aftermarket support. The 420a cars have been made into horsepower monsters; but that generally requires some more fabrication and know-how than the factory turbo option. Not saying that you are not car-illiterate; just something in general since there's less support for that particualr platform. I personally love to see turbo-ed 420A's!

Also note that finding a "good" gs-t or gsx can be difficult. I'd recommend trying to find one that hasn't been modified since there are way to many of them that have been hacked up...... thus where the questionable "realibility" of the turbo cars kick in.

Dude have you gone to pick-N-pull lately turbos galore! for less than $55.... But hey if you want a gofast car than a gst/gsx is the plan, but if you want a quick car than a rs/gs is good. most of the cars here that are for sell like the gst/gsx go for a round $5500 and up the lesser priced ones are riced out so i wouldn't trust them! (unless you are planing doing a complete rebuild)RS/GS in good condition go for less then $3200. Insurance here in TEXAS is Big and if under 25 even Bigger! so a turbo will cost you a lot more! for the 420a its fun to drive even with my 4.6L 294hp mark 8 it still fun!!! and even if you want to turbo it won't cost you much here in SA.. my kit cost me about ~$650, majority of my parts are from Gst's/VR4/Volvo's. from the junk yard. all i need is a fuel pump and to weld every thing, but my welder decided to catch on fire so thats on hold... dont have the money for a new one If i were you i would look at cost and what am i going to do with it...

Although a GS-T or a GSX is nice, get what you can afford. If at this point you can only afford what is in your area for a GS, then go with it. For myself, a GS would have been fine because I don't really boost all that often. I don't get on it or anything so having a non-turbo wouldn't hurt my feelings to much.

If you can find a great running GS that needs nothing for work to pass inspection then jump on it, and if you find a GS-T in the same condition then jump on it!

Bottom line is, get what you can afford

i see people on here saying if you don't want to mod get a 420a and if you do get a 4g63t. i say the 4g63t is much faster right off the bat and if you're not a moron of a driver your insurance won't be a huge difference. i paid $80 a month for the 1990 non-turbo, then i went to add my 1991 awd turbo and it was only $40 more.

i don't get why anyone would bother with a 420a unless you are going for a HP record for that engine. i also would never get a gst unless you like buying tires.

I just bought a GST as a DD. The car has 135xxx miles on it. I got it fairly cheap. I am slowly working on replacing things and modding as the parts are 14 yrs old. I drive 130 miles round trip 5 days a week to work right now. The car has been wonderful. I have gotten 28 mpg, they are fun, they do have quirks. No matter what you buy, you will have to put money into with maintenance. Get the GST and be done. I needed something more economical than my Mustang and something that would still put a smile on my face when I drive it. It is not a beautiful car but, it is a car that I do not mind putting money into as I plan on having it for a long time.
