[EDIT - As per recommendations, I'm going to move my questions from this original post into their own posts (one for each direct topic/category of thing) and keep them as simple and straightforward as I can. As such, this thread can be just for anyone wanting to get a bigger overview of the situation, more details, or to just say hi or comment / ask questions about my build or any other things on the car. With that in mind, on with my post!]

Hi there everyone! Sorry about this being such a long post and having a bunch of questions in one post, but I didn't want to spam with a bunch of posts, hence one big one. ...although I DID cut out all the performance related questions, and I'll put all that in a different post (in the appropriate forum category), hopefully within the next few days. Anyways, on with this post:

I've got a full interior, stock appearing, but performance wise heavily modified 1991 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD [a full mod list I think is either on my profile or in my post history]. It's been off the road for very roughly 8 years now (although sometimes started and worked on some, and occasionally driven very briefly, during that time). I don't have a garage or any proper place to properly work on my car at home (only a gravel driveway that's on a partial angle), which is a large part of what was holding me back from finishing things (well, that, and money haha). Anyways, we recently trailered the car to by brother's house out of state because he has a great garage to work on it in, plus he's also a very experienced mechanic (even moreso than me). I'm looking to both finish and button up all the things I need to to get it fully, properly fixed, correct, and squared away mechanically (the engine would run while it was sitting, it was the transmission that had issues - that's been fixed a few years ago though), AND pass state inspection [a major PITA]. Thank god no emission inspections in my area at least. Anyways, I'm planning on getting all that done, AND EVERYTHING (or at close to everything as possible) else of all the "would be nice" and "mild annoyance" types of things fixed/given the TLC they needed. i.e. the pop-up headlights were stuck up, windows move very slowly, roof/sun-visor cloth disintegrating, etc.). So lots of work, but mostly smaller / quicker / more straightforward things, but the car should hopefully be REALLY nicely squared away once all that is done. Anyways, most of those things are pretty straightforward, the main things I have questions about are as follows:

I'm looking to get the A/C system working; it's never worked since the day I bought the car, BUT the system DID have like 3 PSI in it (after not having been messed with for nearly 20 years), when we checked a few days ago. So, that's promising - there's clearly some levels of a leak, but it's small enough to still hold a little pressure, and more importantly it means it hasn't been open to the elements. Anyways, I'm looking to replace nearly EVERYTHING in the system, with the potential exceptions being some of the fully-metal hard lines, and the evaporator. So we will be replacing the compressor, condenser, expansion valve, receiver/dryer, etc., the o-rings, and hopefully all the hoses with rubber portions to them.

However, when I look at parts lists, I see two different possible AC compressor types on the car, but nothing specifies how to tell them apart. With the compressor on the car we can't see any writing or stickers on it. I do notice that some say (or show) a v-belt and others a serpentine belt. My car has a serpentine belt on the current compressor (and that matches the crank pulley). At the moment I'm only seeing listings for "models with 10PA17C Compressor" (sometimes also called "nippondenso compressor"), but I definitely remember in the past there being listings for an alternative option.

How can you tell / what is the difference between the two different AC compressors? Is it the difference between V belt and serpentine belt? Or is it more complicated to tell?

Do I have to remove the current compressor to see a sticker or markings on it somewhere...? If I have to than so be it, but if not, it'd save both money (labor) and also means we're leaving even more of the system open for a while (we just a week or two ago had to open the system to get the dash out, because we have to replace the heater core).

...side note to that, the heater cores I see available on parts sites (i.e. rockauto.com) are showing a slightly different design than the original, with one of the metal hoses coming out of the end tank in the center instead of at the end. My brother said he's pretty confident the now models would still fit in the heater core housings, but I'm just curious if anyone had dealt with that vaguely recently (i.e. last several years haha) and knows if the new designs fit OK?

Also, I can only find 2 of the A/C lines (and not even from the same place), I think the two that connect to the compressor itself (high side and low side). Is there anywhere that sells any of the other lines? Ideally I'd like to replace all the lines that have rubber portions in them. I'm almost sure that there's more than those two lines that have rubber portions... I could be wrong though.

I currently only have the factory radiator fan [with it's metal housing]. Therefore there is currently NO condenser fan, and since I'm trying to get the AC working again, I want to add one. Is there any good place to buy a slimline [or equivalent] fan? The only ones I'm finding are stupid expensive... is there any cheaper brand names, or a good place to buy a slimline for a reasonable price?

I ask about a slimline (or similar type) of fan because I'm hoping to put it on the FRONT of the condenser (between it and the FMIC) to keep it away from the turbo heat (and also to leave more space for when I eventually upgrade the turbo even further [currently an Evo 3 16G]).

On a totally different note, the sending unit for my aftermarket oil temperature gauge broke apart. My gauge is an Autometer Oil temp gauge, part number 4347 [I still have the box]. However, I bought that 20+ years ago when I bought the car (as a rolling chassis) and put a motor in it. Based on my research, it appears that the sending unit I need for my gauge is an Autometer 2258 sending unit. ... ... HOWEVER, I discovered that Autometer CURRENTLY uses 4347 as the part number for it's CURRENT, NEW oil temp gauges, and that sending unit part number (2258) is in reference to the CURRENT, NEW gauges. Does anyone know if that's still the part number replacement I need, or has Autometer changed their gauges (and sending units) sometime in the past TWO DECADES... Seems sus that they're using the same part numbers, so I'm VERY hesitant to assume that I'm really comparing apples to apples here. Does anyone know, or have any thoughts on this, or know where I could look up more info to confirm one way or the other?

Moving on, I'm about to install some Brian Crower 276/276 cams while we have the car in the shop. (FYI I very recently learned some basics about installing cams and was made aware of how extremely complicated that can be; just wanted to say that we'll do our research and THOROUGHLY learn how to do it right before we do it. That's a subject for another thread in the future though.) Anyways, this was originally intended to be the only "performance upgrade" work we were doing, with everything else being maintenance, cleaning, or quality of life fixes/things (like the roof lining). However this has snowballed into several other supporting mods/maintenance things related to that... although to be fair, many of those were things that were either a good idea to do now anyways, or was upgrades I was going to have to do eventually anyways.
For example, my stock cam gears were cracked and wobbled a bit (but were like that since I bought the car and ran for like 30 or 40 thousand miles just fine). Still, that's a bit sketchy, and on top of that I've learned that sometimes new aftermarket cams aren't... dialed in correctly...? I may be using the wrong terminology there, but point is I may HAVE to have adjustable cam gears to correct for that and avoid the valves hitting the pistons. Sooo.... I decided to get some adjustable cam gears... but I heard the cheap ones where sketchy at best, and NOT recommended, so I bought a set of AEM cam gears. Both because they're both a good brand name, and because they had FIVE bolts clamping the adjustment in place - and I'm always worried about adjustable cam gears slipping. Of course, with new cam gears that means I should replace the timing belt, even though we just did several years and a few dozen miles ago), so... more cost there. Also, my timing belt slack taker-out-er hydraulic cylinder is ~20 years old (and because I know someone with a race engine that was wiped out with a BRAND NEW one failing), I decided to go with a solid adjuster... slightly more expensive (and more money *sigh* haha), but at least it's a one and done expense. Also, because the cams are my "final upgrade in the chain" to do, it's *possible* I get some MASSSSSSIVE HP gains from it, and my 20+ year old Walboro 255 pump might not be up to the task. So I bought a MAJORLY upgraded in-tank pump. Specifically this one:
I'm getting that specific here because even though it was listed as for my car, unless we're missing something obvious, we're like 98% sure it DOES NOT fit in the factory fuel pump housing.
Anyways, I'm not upset about that, I just need to figure out a way to get it to work. I know some people cut the factory supply line [metal line] that the stock pump mounts into, and then run a hose from the top of the pump to that. But I really, REALLY do NOT want to cut up (in that way) my pump housing, in case something goes wrong and I have to go back to a literally-stock-style pump like the Walboro 255.

What's the possibility of finding a used stock fuel pump housing? I'm assuming nearly zero, and/or it's going to cost a liver and a kidney to get it. Since I have an AWD 1g, I believe the pump housing is different from ALL the rest of the 1g options (which were FWD - both the turbo and non-turbo). AND I'm 1g, not 2g - meaning even older old car parts haha. Anyways, is anyone familiar with mounting options for pumps like this? I'm wondering about the possibility of maybe turning the pump like 20-30 degrees or so to get the output port of the pump to NOT line up with the stock supply line, and then running a rubber hose from that off to the side a little and find a spot to drill a hole in the bulkhead and mount some fittings there (so you can connect the rubber hose to the fitting on the bottom of the bulkhead, and a new hose (probably AN line) on the top. FYI I still have the factory fuel lines. Anyways, thoughts? Any alternative suggestions, or does that sound like a good idea? And how likely am I to find another fuel housing? [because of how rare they are they're probably genuinely WORTH a bunch of money, but I wouldn't be willing to spend very much. If I can go through the bulkhead in a different spot, I can retain the original supply line just in case. If I can find a good solution (i.e. possibly what I just mentioned), then I don't need another fuel pump housing (even if that did turn out to be a practical and affordable option). I'm hoping and assuming we'll be able to figure something out with my current housing, but that's why I'm asking here, to get thoughts and ideas and options.

...side note to that, doing that would require the pump being held in with zip ties and/or clamps. Would that hold it in place well enough over, say, 100,000 miles of bumps and speedbumps and hard pulls and the usual bumping and movement of use? I'm assuming probably others have tried this method (although maybe not that many miles on it), what has your luck been?

While we're talking about fuel pump housings, on the 1g AWD models such as mine, the fuel level sending unit is an integral part of the fuel pump housing. While my fuel gauge worked for the majority of the time I owned the car while it was still driving, the gauge worked; but for the last while I was driving it (maybe a year or two) the gauge didn't work (I can't remember details, I want to say it just always stayed at 3/4th tank or something like that). I'm not sure if the issue is the sending unit or the gauge in the instrument cluster, but the sending unit seems vastly more likely. Thankfully I do have a spare instrument cluster, but unfortunately we forget to try that before we pulled the dash apart (the current state of the car), so I wasn't able to try that yet.

Anyways, the question is, is there any easy way to test the fuel level sending unit? i.e. is there a certain wire you can read with a multimeter, or is it more complicated than a voltage range or something like that?

ALSO, there appears to be only one wire connected to the sending unit - is this correct, or is a wire missing or disconnected? There is a wire running into the tank from the bulkhead that's taped off with electrical tape, which is.... odd (seems VERY unlikely the factory would have done that), but I most definitely didn't - so even if the wire was attached to the level sending unit and broke, it wouldn't have had electrical tape put on it.... soooo... yea.... mystery there. Any thoughts? Is there any diagrams of what all the wires that go through the bulkhead are supposed to be for? (Yes, the low fuel light sensor is ALSO running though this bulkhead, but as far as I know that's still working, it was working when the fuel level sending unit wasn't, so as far as I know it's not something I need to mess with, hence why I only mentioned it now).

Moving on, all that brings us to another question: Assuming I can eventually figure out how to mount that fuel pump, then I've just MASSIVELY upgraded my pump, to something with almost TWICE the flow capability of my old pump (DANG these new technology pumps are SOOOOO cool!). I'm running FULLY stock fuel lines from the pump, to the rail, using a stock rail (upgraded injectors of course though), a stock FP regulator, and stock return lines. Do I need to upgrade my Fuel Pressure Regulator now that I've just doubled my fuel flow? (which might be close to quadruple the stock amount) Side question, I'm using a stock regulator, which is ~35 years old now; do those go bad over time? i.e. is it a good idea to replace it now, even if I didn't have to? (that said, I know I'd probably eventually need to upgrade the FPR in the future if I get a bigger turbo and make big power).

Assuming I do need to get a new, upgraded FPR (looks like they're around $160 to $280 or so). However, that brings up two questions:
1.) What pressure should I set it to?
and 2.) How do I know what it's set to.
I'm assuming the answer to "2" is that I need a fuel pressure gauge. BUT, unless I'm remembering wrong, I don't think there's anywhere to tap in a fuel pressure gauge from the factory. Do aftermarket fuel pressure regulators have an access port to mount a gauge from?

Side question to that, I'm also curious in what ways the factory FPR regulates the pressure. I know it has a vacuum line that runs to it; does it do anything under vacuum, or is this just to chance (raise, I would assume) the fuel pressure based on boost, to compensate for the boost pressure working against the fuel pressure? Assuming that's the case, is the factory regulator just a 1:1 ratio in how much it raises it?

Also, approximately how much fuel pressure is the factory pressure (at idle / before it's raised by boost)? (this would allow me to figure out how high the fuel pressure could get at max, and what my pump could flow at that pressure). For reference, I could conceivably be able to spike to 30 PSI boost, although most likely my engine [with all it's mods] flows too well for it to spike that high, so probably more likely 25-28 PSI).

Another side question to all that, if I get an aftermarket FPR, is it a good idea to slightly raise the base fuel pressure to get better fuel atomization, or does that cause it to reach fuel pressures at max boost that a harsh on the injectors? [forcing the injector ball open too violently]

Lastly, I'm looking to replace the speedometer cable (the speedometer gauge in the instrument cluster "bounces" a couple of MPH up and down while driving at any speed, which is really annoying - I'm hoping replacing this cable will fix that). Rockauto.com lists two different options, a 45.5 inch long cable and a 44.0 inch long one. My brother measured the one in my car and it's around 43.0 inch (go figure). He said the 44.0 inch one looked probably the closest, and that the end points appeared to be the same as the one on the car [as best as you can tell from a photo]; does this sound correct? Also, is replacing the cable likely to fix this issue?

I'm so, So, SO, SOOOOO super excited about getting my car on the road and getting to drive it again! I don't think I've seen a single 1g DSM (of ANY type/submodel) on the road in my area in over a decade, and maybe just 2 or 3 2g cars in over a decade (there is 1 2g non-turbo regular driving around though). Anyways, it's really sad I don't see more, but on the plus side, I think my car is going to get a very, VERY lot of attention in the area, because they're SO rare now (particularly ones that are AWD Turbo, in good condition, AND running / driving / passes inspection). Heck, over the last 8 years when it's been sitting, even the few times I do drive it to get gas or take it to a shop, literally almost every time I stop somewhere (i.e. gas station) even with how briefly I'm there, someone says something about the car. And that's been mostly a couple to several years ago, they're even more rare now. I was just at a big car show yesterday and chatting with some people, one person there was like "OMG thank you SOOOO much for keeping that car preserved and on the road" haha. There was a LOT of people I talked to that know and love the DSMs and said they were really excited to see the car in the future once I finish getting it on the road. Sadly no turbo DSMs there, just the 1 local with the non-turbo 2g. I hope to change that with my car in the future haha.

FYI I also have several more performance related questions, what certain things can handle, upgrade options, etc. and things like that, but this post is already crazy long (plus those are different subjects) so I'm going to make a separate post about that stuff shortly, hopefully within a few days (possibly much sooner). I'll also post an as-detailed-as-I-can full mod list of my car, which can also be used for future reference.

I'll also eventually have some questions about some other things, like painting the car, but at this point there's too many other questions and mechanical things that I need to get done first haha, so I'll ask about that stuff once I get closer to that point. I would love to paint it before I take it home, but no idea if that'll be at all practical / an option, we'll see.

Well... welcome (hang on, let me scroll back up...) IntellectCorner. First, you and we would be MUCH better served if you cut this post up and put each question in a different post. Not only will you save us brain space in trying to hold on to all of that information, but your responses will be categorized according to your questions. Leaving it like this will have your various answers and input jumbled worse than Kamela's word salads.

first part of a project is to compartmentalize the project based on immediate want and need. dont just tear apart the car without setting mile stone objectives. it wont be rebuilt in a day and as such a project you want to hit "wins" as you move towards finishing a complete car

with the ac system you typically dont need to replace everything. unless the compressor has grenaded metal into the lines, the metal lines themselves should be fine. the rubber lines typically do not suffer damage but it wont hurt to be pro active. typically on my cars that have been off the road for a few years my AC restoration is to replace ALL seals in the system, replace the expansion valve and drier and put new refrigerant in the system. things like the evap core rarely fail and are removed and inspected when you replace the expansion valve that is mounted on them.

it may not make sense to go with an entirely new compressor if your old one is still in good working condition. you could be buying a chinese made reproduction that has been sitting in a box for 20 years on a shelf, that has issues. if anything I would suggest removing your old one and putting new oil in it.

the part 2 of my question is, why do you want an AC system with a big turbo and cams. to me there is a divergent point of having horse power and having a fun car. I'd rather have a fun slow car with ac, than a high horsepower big turbo car that has an AC system that doesnt work very well. at the age of this vehicle any modification adds complications to how the car was designed to operate.

so set your project goals and imagine you had your dream horse power. is that car a daily driver you drive to work on nice days, or is it a car that you have a specific horse power goal to beat a corvette.

is your goal a full restoration over multiple years? is your horse power goal going to mean you need to replace the clutch? does that mean you will eventually need to replace axles, differentials, and transfer cases?

I prefer lightly modified vehicles because they are low maintenance and less prone to break. so that i can enjoy them as cars being driven and not projects collecting parts 😉

if you plan to pull the motor and the entire interior you should expect this car to be off the road for the next year and taking double your current budget and double your time estimate. if thats what you want go for it, but setting engine modifications above everything on a 30+ year old car seems backwards to me if you enjoy droving the car

Thanks for saying that in such a polite way! I know some forums are REALLY particular about people posting several posts at once, which is why I didn't do that by default. But as long as you all are OK with that, I can do that. It definitely would keep things much more organized and simpler, and if I leave this main thread for those that want "the whole story," I can post JUST the questions (and only the necessary details about my car for people to be able to answer the question). So thanks for letting me know it's OK to do that!

Thanks for the reply, there was definitely a number of helpful points in there! Unfortunately there was also a number of misunderstandings because I didn't make my post WAYYYY longer and explain my power goals and whatnot haha. Not your fault, looking back over my post I can definitely see where someone would get those impressions. It's always a fine line deciding how much info is too much / unnecessary details, and how much is needed haha.

To give you a little more info, I've owned the car for probably a little over 20 years, and I've peace-meal upgraded it over ~10-13 years - basically all the performance mods were done at some point during that time-frame, including having the motor built (that happened after I owned the car for a year or so). After those ~13 years then it mostly sat due to problems, but we did do significant work on it periodically during that time. Such as: having the transmission rebuilt (a tooth broke off of 2nd gear), doing the carrier bearings, replacing and upgrading the pedal assembly (for purposes of the clutch pedal), upgrading the clutch even further, and doing the timing and accessory belt (and several other misc smaller things). Also my old aluminum radiator failed and we had to replace that.

Anyways, this current time we're working on the car, where we trailered it to by brother's house, before we did that we DID talk extensively and wrote up a FULL list of the things we planned to do to the car during this trip. It's primarily a bunch of small or relatively small things, and just a few medium sized things (such as the cams, and taking out the dash to replace the heater core). Unless something REALLY unforeseen comes up, we definitely shouldn't have to pull the motor - you don't even need to pull the cylinder head to replace the cams. Anyways, all that said, we were fully aware that there would most likely be a few other things we'd find that would need to be done. I will admit that that's gotten to be a few more things that I wasn't expecting, but so far we're not far off of the list we made before we started. And so far we've only had to add parts to the list (i.e. adjustable cam gears, solid timing belt tensioner), not any additional labor (as we would have had to remove all of those to begin with when we installed the cams). Oh, and speaking of the cams, they were given to me as a gift around a year and a half ago; so A.) it's not like it was among the parts I purchased for this "maintenance" trip, and B.) it's not like I was rushing to put them in. The fuel pump we knew from the start was a "we might need to replace this," so having to wasn't a surprise at all, but it WAS a surprise for doing so to end up being such a big and complicated ordeal haha.

I'm not going to go into much detail about my power goals because like I said, I plan to do another post about that in the very near future, but so people have a rough idea, here's the basics. I currently have an Evo 3 16G turbo on the car; the upgraded cams should unlock the remaining potential of that turbo, I should be at or near the max that turbo is capable of on my current setup. Although, shy of modifying the turbo (i.e. porting the exhause housing), my stock intake manifold may be the only remaining part to be upgraded - which may or may not even help with the current turbo. Anyways, my current goal is to do the cams and max out the turbo (without being too hard on it), and drive it like that for a while. Depending on how much power I end up making at that point (I've heard everything from "it maxes out at 380 crank HP, MAYBE 400 if you push it" to people making 425, maybe even 450 - TO ALL 4 WHEELS (for those two numbers). There's obviously a CRAZY difference between 380 crank HP and 425+ AWHP haha, sooo.... not sure what to expect I'll make. If I do only make 380-400 crank HP, I'd probably want to upgrade the turbo in the vaguely near future (maybe a year or two, very roughly), but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I'd love to be in the vauge vacinity of 500-550 CRANK HP, but if I could get very close to that with the current turbo (i.e. 475 to 490 crank HP or something like that), that would be close enough and I'd probably stay at that point for a GOOD while. In a perfect world, someday in the future if I have a bunch more money to throw at it, AND I know in advance there's things I can do to have the drivetrain handle the power, I'd love to make a bit more - maybe 700 or 800, in an ideal scenario I'd love to be able to hit the magical 1000 crank HP - which, if I revved it to like 10,000 RPM or so, might not be out of the question to have a further upgraded drivetrain handle it, because if you work it right, it would be possible to do that while only making something like 550 or 600 ft-lb of torque, with torque being the part that's hard on the drivetrain. Anyways, anything like that would be FAR future goals, and may never happen; for now, my goal is "whatever the Evo 3 16G turbo will do on my setup, within reason." Meaning I'm not looking to push it too hard, or tune it too agressively, etc.; I'm not looking to set records with it.
FYI I do have a fully rebuilt motor, forged pistions and rods, 9:1 compression [which makes making decent power on the Evo 3 16 G turbo a LOT more practical], and a ported & polished head with 1mm oversize valves. And of course all the supporting mods, FMIC, 3" exhaust, 850cc injectors, etc. Plus the FULL version of ECMlink.

As far as the AC system goes, approx 20 years ago we tried putting the belt on the AC (I usually left it off, because the AC didn't work anyways), and recharging the system, but the AC compressor would never kick on. Granted, it's possible there was other issues (i.e. wiring), but the most likely explanation is the compressor is bad. Assuming that the type of compressor I need is the one that IS still available, then I can get a compressor - including pully and clutch - for around $185. That's cheap enough - particularly since it includes the pully and clutch, which I'd REALLY prefer to replace at this age / mileage (the car has very roughly 180 or 190k miles). And again, for that price, it's not worth messing with the old compressor unless we have to. That said, I MOST DEFINITELY will be KEEPING the old compressor; that way if I do end up having issues with the new one, it's still an option to have the old one rebuilt. While I agree that modern replacement parts are pretty low quality these days, it still usually is halfway decent; i.e. I replaced nearly the entire AC system on my 99 civic daily driver roughly 8 years ago and it still works perfectly well (I think we had to add 1 can of r134 in that amount of time). Anyways, talking about my Talon again, my brother had a 99 Eclipse GSX (so nearly a decade newer, and this was over a decade ago) and when he got the AC fixed on his car, one or both of the rubber hoses blew out. It's just that the hoses are generally not all THAT expensive, and it's so much easier to replace stuff while we have it in a great garage / working conditions, and while we already have the AC system apart, so we're not wasing refrigerent [which is getting stupid expensive these days]. Thankfully my brother has the various equipment and gauge kit for us to vacuum down and charge the system ourselves, saving a bunch of money.

On that note, I want to again emphasize how EXTREMELY BAD the working conditions at my place are, and how EXTREMELY GOOD the working conditions at my brother's place are (plus he has a TON more tools and equipment than I do). Hence why it's a pretty big deal for me to get as much as I reasonably can done while it's still in such good working conditions (and I have someone to help / work on it). I am paying him to work on it, although he's charging me a VERY reasonable, pretty low amount. And I plan to make a trip to his house soon once we have all the remaining parts ordered (hope to place that order within a few days, if I can find out everything I need to), and at that point I'll help him work on the car (and do a bunch of things myself on it). Anyways, we were always expecting the car to be at his house for a few months, and if it ends up being an additional month or two, not a big deal. So far we're making really good progress though.

As for your question of why I want AC on a car with big turbo and cams. Well, first off, I currently have an Evo 3 16g, which definitely isn't a "big turbo" and spools QUITE quickly (probably in significant part because I have a 9:1 compression motor). Secondly, I used to think like that when I was younger haha, which is why I left the AC belt off and was only willing to throw like $10 at it to recharge the system and try it. When that didn't work, oh well, more power haha. But as I get older - and also because I'm hoping to drive the car a decent amount, possibly a lot, and sometimes for work, and also it has a black interior and gets REALLY hot inside in the summer, it just makes it SO much more enjoyable and practical to drive (and almost necessary if working, so I'm not coated in sweat haha). I'd always turn off the AC before doing any pulls to redline anyways, so the effects on performance are EXTREMELY minimal - one free wheeling pully, and [according to other posts on here about the weight of things] only 35 lbs of additional weight, and that's for the ENTIRE A/C system [or so I'm told]. Sounds about right though. Anyways, since we can get it all fixed for so cheap (probably in the vague ballpark of $500 or less in parts, and not much labor as most of the things are easy and quick to replace), it's not a bad expendature for SO much more comfort. Anyways, going back to the original point, I ALWAYS intend to keep this as a street car - both now, and in the immediate future, AND even if I was making 1000 horsepower in it. I know that drivetrain parts and upgrades are getting both expensive and hard to find, and that launching - particularly hard and with a lot of power - is by FAR the #1 thing the breaks parts, so I'm going to try to avoid launching it the vast majority of the time, and never launch it that hard when I do. Also, with how expensive/rare drivetrain parts are (particularly transmission parts), I'm probably going to either never take it to the dragstrip anymore, or only launch it pretty gently if I do [because there's SO much more traction at the dragstrip], to try to keep my drivetrain together. Anyways, point is, this is always intended to stay a street car, *hopefully* with full interior [as it currently still has], hence why A/C makes sense. I have done a bunch of things to lighten the car already, and plan to do more in the future, but I'm not going to go so far as to gut the interior. I believe the car weights around 3000 lbs flat, definitely between 3000 and 3100. I don't remember exact numbers from the last time I weighed it (nearly 20 years ago), but I *think* it was either 3000 or 3040. I hope to weight it again in the relatively near future as I'm really curious to know for sure - AND to have a baseline for any further lightening mods I do in the future. Not planning to get into much if any of that during this maintenance trip, other than removing the remaining soundproofing that was behind the dash, since we have the dash out anyways and it's easy to access now.

To directly answer your question, I'd rather have a fast but practical car with AC, even if that means I can't beat a Corvette. That said, a corvette has only two drive wheels and I have four, and I believe our cars are impressive enough that, with LOTS of effort and mods and fine-tuning (probably a good bit more of all of those things than I currently have), they could both have AC _AND_ beat a Corvette - particularly on the street haha (although I wouldn't actually streetrace something like that on the street, too dangerous with two VERY fast cars). 99% of the time I don't streetrace anyways, maybe do a pull next to someone that I know that thinks their car is fast, and hear them tell about how they looked down to make sure they were in gear as I walked away from them like they were standing still. Been on the receiving end of that one before haha [definitely NOT in my Talon though], and I've heard others say the exact same thing. Anyways, particularly if I can in the further future find ways to further strengthen the drivetrain [and THEN make a bunch more power, in that order] I'd love to show modern day people (and particularly the younger generations) what our cars are truely capable of. One step at a time though, that is NOT my immediate goals; you're definitely VERY correct about needing to set practical, shorter-term goals for the time being, and only go for those at first, then you can set a higher goal.

Going back to your other questions, the only "restoration" work we're planning to do here are the headliner and possibly sunvisors, and maybe the headlights' flip-up mechenism, if that qualifies as resto work haha. The possabilty of painting the car wasn't really in the initial plan (although it was a possability) with the exception of the fiberglass parts - the paint has ENTIRELY come off in some spots, exposing the fiberglass, so I HAVE to do something about that very soon. It's a relatively small chance things will work out for us to paint the car (or have someone else do it) this trip, but we'll play that by ear and look more into that once we get more of all these important mechanical things done. I should clarify that I'm not looking to have this immaculate condition, near or at perfection show car. I mean, if it ends up being only slightly more expensive to get there, then I'm certainly not opposed to that haha, but that's most definitely not my goal or priority; at the moment if we paint it, the goal would be an EXTREMELY cheap paint job that still looks pretty good (this is still practical even with cheap spray paint, if you do a great job prepping and painting - I've done it before in smaller areas (i.e. fenders) of other cars).

As for your question if my HP goals mean I have to replace my clutch, yes, but I already did. My old ACT2100 clutch was heavily worn, and near the very end (before it was parked for ~8 years when the transmission broke) the flywheel/pressure plate got hazed pretty bad, and as a result the clutch was sometimes slipping when under boost. So for multipul reasons, it was time to replace the clutch - but we had to take the transmission off anyways to get it fixed, so that was of course the perfect time to replace the clutch, which we did. My brother still had his ACT2600 pressure plate from his eclipse, which was relatively lightly used (10,000 miles AT MOST, probably less), and I installed a brand new ACT street disk with the ACT2600 pressure plate. And the 2600 should be able to handle anything the Evo 3 16G turbo can put out (with the possible exception of it I'm near the high end of the HP/TQ numbers other people have made, but in the unlikely case that that happens, I'd just need to lower the boost slightly to keep the torque within what the clutch can handle, and you could still [theoretically] make the exact same HP, just only at a higher RPM [by nature of how the HP equasion works].

Moving on, you asked "does that mean you will eventually need to replace axles, differentials, and transfer cases?" I'm pretty sure for my current goal (max out the Evo 3 16G turbo) I shouldn't need to replace those things. *possibly* not even if I slightly upgrade the turbo (and make 500-550 CRANK HP - NOT wheel HP haha). But for my much longer term goals, yes, I'm sure I will have to upgrade those things. But I may end up being VERY happy at 400 to 450 WHP, maybe even slightly less, and stick at that point for a long time. Since I want to practical streetcar, if it turns out that at 400 WHP I'm already blowing the tires off in 1st and 2nd gear, then I'm already at my max practical power for most everyday situations. So anything beyond that would be a luxury, which I'd only go for if and when I was making significantly more money and had a lot more money to be able to throw at the car haha.

I'm *hoping* that me doing all of this preventative maintenance, plus doing everything RIGHT, with quality parts, not pushing parts to their limit when I should have done certain supporting mods before that point, and so on, that the car will be at least semi-reliable, at least to the extent any heavily modded motorsports car is. Like I said though, I have a second daily driver car, so it's not a big deal if the car does periotically need work; it just hopefully won't be TOO major work each time haha. (at least, untill I'm looking to upgrade things further).

Like I said earlier, the motor is already built, forged pistons and rods, etc. (and cam springs rated for 10,000 RPM - so I should be ok with installing such a big (276/276) and agressive cam). So we really shouldn't need to pull the motor, either now or any time in the near future until I do major upgrades (or need to rebuild it due to miles or something), assuming of course nothing fails in the motor. On these cars pulling the motor isn't that big of a job though. Likewise with the interior, the interior is pretty easy to take out on these cars, and we've already removed it (well, seats, center console, and carpet) before we took out the dash (which, again, is still a decent job, but QUITE simple compared to taking out the dash on most modern cars. It's really not as big of a job as you're making it sound like, particularly for experienced mechanics. Also, when I first bought the car, as a rolling chassis, I COMPLETELY took the interior (except the dash) out and removed ALL of the soundproofing, carpet padding, and scraped the tar-like soundproofing off the floor as well. So at that time I had to remove all the plastic paneling as well, so that was a much bigger job - this time we don't have to remove any of the plastic pannels (although we might when we deal with the roof). Anyways, point is, much of the hard work has already been done, at various points in the 20+ years I've owned the car.

These cars get DISMAL gas mileage AND require premium gas; so for me, when I'm driving it, I want it to be working properly and be a FUN car to drive, to justify the very high gas and maintenance costs. (although to be fair, the costs of owning and maintaining modern cars is getting INSANE, so comparatively our cars aren't as outragously expensive to maintain as they used to be. At least untill I have something break that's REALLY hard to find a replacement for. :p As for budget, we're slightly over what I was optomistically hoping for, but still well within what I knew was a strong likelyhood and was willing to spend. Assuming we don't run into too many other things, or at least not any majorly expensive things, I'll probably be at around $1200 to $1500 in parts, everything combined, for this entire maintenace trip, so probably $2000 to $2500 for EVERYTHING including labor, that's REALLY not bad for just how much work we're doing on the car, INCLUDING installing upgraded cams, lifters, cam gears, and a massively upgraded fuel pump haha. It helps that I parted out another DSM many years ago and have a bunch of spare parts from that, such as another set of headlight assemblies and motors, etc., and COUNTLESS other misc things, bolts, brackets, etc. And if the total goes up a little bit that's OK, particularly if it means I'm getting other upgrades for that additional cost - although we're trying to not do any excessive upgrades now, as I do want to get it back on the road and get some miles on it and see how it does, to make sure there isn't any major issues we're unaware of (i.e. if, god forbid, we had to rebuild the engine for some reason, etc.). Not that that would be cateclysmic, assuming it was just a rebuild and not a catestrophic failure type of problem, but would still really such haha.
