Gates Timing Belt

I just wanted to get opinions on this because I don’t have much experience. I installed this gates timing belt around 400 miles ago, and I was just wondering if this is normal wear for this or there is an issue.

It’s normal. Did you replace the pulleys when you did the belt?

Here’s mine after 20k miles and ten years. Basically it’s just normal dirt and oil residue being slung around and smeared by the pulleys. Mine stayed a lot cleaner for longer because I did all the pulleys at the same time

The bright blue is where I wiped it clean with a rag

I did replaced the pulleys when I did the timing job. Maybe I just got dirt on it working on the car. Thanks

10 years! Thats way over replacement spec of 5 years! 60k or 5 years is the service lifespan. Kevlar can be a tad longer but man your risking it

It does depend on the brand. Gates color wears of somewhat faster than others. HKS and TODA last alot longer.

I had a gates timing belt that had maybe 2k miles on it but it was about 10 years old, that thing shredded without warning. I don't think any of us are going to exceed the mile rating before the yearly replacement if I'm being honest.

The HKS purple belt is a Gates belt. It says it on the packaging, just FYI.

It says it now but never used to. The coating is slightly different also. Toda is the same. Blue gates you can feel the color coating where as the HKS and Toda are more impregnated into the component

In my brain 6 years 60k miles is under severe conditions, and 9 years 90k miles for regular conditions. (That’s a Honda factory service manual not a Dsm thing tho ). I’m past that milestone too.

There’s no cracking and no leaks, I’m more concerned with the balance shaft belt to be honest


The black 99gst in my signature has a regular timing belt with less than 2k miles on it but has been atleast 8 years. I can visibly see surface cracks. That one is going to be replaced first

Just did a timing belt replacement. Belt, tensioner, pullies and water pump last changed in 2011... Don't remember the brand of the belt, but it might have been a Gates. It had less than 2000 miles on it, and honestly looked fine (ie like a belt with only 2k miles) despite its age. No cracks, separating, or other issues.

I think they all vary per car also, pickup inlooked at was something like 90k or 7-8 years lifespan.

They more worry about elements and material breakdown as rubber does that. I do agree if its not used as much in theory it should wear less but then their is still tension on it. I think its a game of chance also

Mine looked fine also until it let go out of nowhere. There were no cracks and the belt looked fine but it just flew apart.

I want to believe your claim, like I really really want to believe you that it says that somewhere on the hks belt. I do want to see a picture of the belt tho, it’s a good competition we have going on here for oldest belt
