Gas tank swap options.... let's discuss this

James, if you can start a 20 minute session on 1/3 or a 1/2 of a tank instead of a full tank, that will save you a lot of weight and should definitely help your lap times. Yes, you will have to fill up at the end of the session but I have to do that anyway, even after a full tank, since I get fuel starvation right around a half a tank.

Relative to most other weight reduction ideas, I would see this as one of the most effective ways to reduce weight for road racers.

I can understand your point of only having to run in 20 minute sessions. That makes more sense to me. I was thinking you are running for hours and were going to run a surge tank to solve all the problems. Agreed. I agree with being the most cost effective, but not most effective.

True, the most effective way would be a fuel cell. I wish I had the cash for that solution.

Most anyone who does road racing will be running in 20-30 minute sessions or less, whether it be an open track event or a race.

Well, i learned something new. I thought road racing lasted longer. Update this if you do decide to go with a surge tank.

The pros race longer stints, but 99.9% of anyone here will be doing 20-30 minute sessions. The few who end up doing longer runs will almost certainly be using a fuel cell.

And I will update the thread.

Sorry to bring an ancient thread back to life but I havent found any good solution for a NASA race-legal fuel tank elsewhere.

I tried baffles and walbro pickups in the stock tank, didnt work out so well. I ended up building my own tank with an awesome double sump system. My tank works extremely well, it would have to turn almost upside down to run out of gas to the external pump. It uses the stock fill port, sending unit and idiot light sensor also. However this is legal for autocross but not NASA road track sessions since it is modified it has to meet race spec and that would be FIA-FT3. I picked up a Fuel Safe Enduro 12 gal fuel cell and a new Fuel Safe internal bucket with 3 doors (the economy white plastic one) Since the new fuel cell measures 17 3/4 long and 9 Inches high, I'm going to have to cut out the floor inside the frame rails in the trunk area to mount it and fab up a firewall with door over it to fill. This will be a winter project most likely and I'll try to get some pics as I go.
