In the stock configuration, the engine bay fuse box has four 10awg wires (two groups of two) that run to the battery to supply the fuse box with power. I'm rewiring my engine bay and relocating my battery to the trunk, so for convenience sake I would like to replace the four wires with two larger gauge ones. How can I calculate what size wires I will need to use? My gut says to go with 4awg, but I might be able to use 8awg. I don't have a personal preference either way, I just figured there is some equation out there that I can figure out the minimum gauge wire I should use. Or, if there is a good reason to stick with four 10awg wires then let me know.

For what it's worth, I have removed the following from the fuse box:
Fog light fuse and relay
A/C compressor fuse and relay
Both A/C fan relays
One of the high speed main fan relays (for A/T only)
My alternator wire is no longer ran through the fuse box, it has it's own separate fuse. The alternator fuse in the fuse box is still present so all of the fuse box relays and fuses can get power.

You have to think about voltage loss over the length of wire too. I would do NO smaller then 4 gauge high strand wire

The wire will be less than 18". Does that change anything?
