Hello!

I just bought my very first DSM 2 days ago and had a quick question. Its a 1999 eclipse GSX AWD, and not very modded at all. One thing the guy did to it though, was put in an Evo 8 fuel pump. The car doesn't start up right away on a cold start, and he assured me it was just because of the larger fuel pump. This is okay, but what actions do I take next to eliminate that problem? It just takes upwards of 6-7 seconds sometimes, and I'm already tired of people's horrified looks thinking I bought a POS car.

thanks!

An EVO fuel pump won't cause it to hesisitate to start unless the regulator is bad or something else is wrong. Does the car smell very rich? You need to check and see what plugs he has in there and what they are gapped at. Also check to see if the coolant temperature sensor is reading properly to let the ECU know how much fuel to add on a cold start. Here are your resistance values for the ECT sensor.
Engine Coolant Temperature - °F (°C) Resistance - Ohms
32 (0) 5100-6500
68 (20) 2100-2700
104 (40) 900-1300
176 (80) 260-360

Does it smell like gas when it's idling. Like the regulator is bad and it's just dumping fuel into the cylinder.

Sounds likely. I'm not positive on the 2g's but 1g's have a fuel pressure solenoid that helps with initial start up, basically it adds a little pressure when cold cranking. I bypassed this in my system when I installed an Aeromotive adjustable fuel pressure regulator (AFPR) to help regulate the Walbro fuel pump pressure. You can go aftermarket or use the stock FPR as it works just fine until you more than double your stock hp. If you have a mityvac or other well regulated air source, you can check to see if it's (stock FPR) maintaining the proper pressure.
