FP18G-TD06SL: What's your boost set at?

So my car is currently at DoxBox getting a new headgasket and ARP studs. I have been running 21-22psi with no knock/no problems. I am really thinking of increasing the boost to 24psi now that I have done the headgasket and studs. Anyone else running this turbo? How much boost are you running on your set-up? My mods are in my profile. Injectors are 650cc.
 
I didn't see a wide band in your profile. Depending on how good the tune is with your set up, you could see a really nice increase going to 24 or you could just be beating the engine. I see your using a Jeff O chip, do you have an SAFC also? What are your AFR's at now (WOT)?

UEGO is on the way. I do not have an AFC. The car runs great with his base tune alone. I do however, monitor the knock sensor gauge(factory boost gauge) religiously. When I was having problems with my Fuel Labs FPR, the knock gauge saved my engine from going bye-bye.
 
I would make as much as that internal gate will allow until you run out of fuel. I'm planning on running 28-30psi with the 18G that's going on my FWD as long as the 650cc injectors will permit that much boost. Based on what I've seen with the same 650's in my buddy's 2G, 25psi with a Frank 5 20G wasn't running out of fuel on 93 pump gas.

If it'll get you to 24psi, that's awesome....if not, you may be in the market for one of these:

Yea it won't hold that much boost until redline at WOT. I think I may be going external real soon.

edit: Oh and Justin that is exactly the info I was looking for regarding running out of fuel.
 
Back then my buddy didn't have Link yet, so we were basing injector duty solely on little or no knock....and at 25psi, there was little to no knock displayed on the timing curve. I'm sure the 650's were about to the end of their usefulness, but keep in mind a 60-trim Garrett compressor pushes alot more air than an 18G compressor.

Yea, I got a nifty little gauge that fly's up REAL fast if I have knock. Plus, the car pulls timing.
 
Yeah I just watched the timing curve on the logger when we tuned back then. Now we have the Wideband, the Knock (Boost) Gauge, and Link logs the Wideband as well so I can see what happens to the fuel and timing at the exact point which the car goes lean / rich.

Link is worth it's weight in gold when you compare it's value to what you'd spend on an AFC, Logger, and burnt EPROM chip.

Well its stated that Fp likes the 18g compressor because it has better efficiency in the 22-28psi range than evo3 wheel. I used to run a tdo5/18g with stock cams and intake. It would spike to about 24-5psi and settle in at about 21-22psi with internal and it had some killer midrange and would pull great up to 7k. I loved it for the street and it had rocket spool

Maybe you should say something to Jeff about going over the tune on the chip again. I know when I ordered my chip he asked me what the highest boost I was going to run was. It would be really bad if you got into it one time and it went to lean. Just a suggestion... Other then that, everything seems well so far.

I would recommend talking to Jeff as well about your timing and a few others for your new target boost

...and I'm sure they build that turbo specifically with that boost range in mind. If you're running under that boost range, you're probably not going to feel the a noticeable difference between the 18G and a 16G.

It's amazing how a turbo reacts when it's used within it's efficiency range. These guys that are buying 60-trim Garretts and never exceeding 15psi are better off with a 16G. They have no idea how much hidden power that 60-trim has once it's pushed to it's limit.


The same holds true for the Honda / Acura guys who buy GT35R's and run them at 8psi. Way to waste a ton of money on a turbo that you'll never put to use.

i ran the fp 6sl2-18g for the last year 1 1/2. 20 psi on pump and 24 on race gas. had to go to an external gate to get boost to hold steady above 25psi. and when robert at fp says the turbo will make 400 whp at 28 psi the turbo will make that and more.

and to the OP you might want to think about bigger injectors. with the fp 18g i was hitting 55 to 58% injector duty cycles on my 1150's which would be almost 100% idc's on the 650's.

I saw that thread, but he was on e85. I just got a reply from Jeff. He said I could run up to 25psi on the tune now. The factory ecu is only mapped to 25psi so if I wanted to run more I would need dsmlink. He did mention that I should monitor for knock and possibly increase the octane level of the fuel I am using if needed.

I believe he was a little over 28 psi but either way Bastard dsm's galant is badass. oh plus that was with 750's and a 255 intank i believe.
