so i picked up an awesome deal today on a 99gsx ecu (md346676) and this weekend ill probably install it and order up a tactrix cable so i can start flashing,

question, in another thread i was reading someone mentioned having to go to the junk yard and get a "flashable port" ... ###?

this is the first im hearing about this, as far as i knew, it was plug in new ecu, attach tactrix to obdII port, copy rom.. start logging/flashing.. am i missing a step in there?

You have to add the white flash plug or use a head phone style cord. It needs to be added to the 70 pin on the ecu. There is a wright up on the head phone cord on the ceddymods forum.

Mine doesn't have the flash port either. I have the headphone jack wire attached to the ecu with a little plug pin I took from another wiring harness I didn't need. Works just fine. That is the only difference for the pre 98 cars.

Actually it needs to be at pin 79 not pin 70... .

Guessing that's a typo since there is no pin 70 :)

It's what allows the car to be flashed. Without it you won't be able to change anything.

And yes, the tractrix cable plugs into your obd2 port, and has two wires that plug into it. One is a micro USB (goes to laptop) the other is a mono head phone jack that needs to go to the pin stated above. It almost "unlocks" the ecu to allow flashing. Without it I don't believe ecu flash will connect to your ecu.

That's right... Without the extra voltage on 79, the ECU cannot be flashed. It doesn't have enough internal voltage to flash the H8 chip set, and that pin is where it comes from. The Evo 8 ecu's don't have this problem because they have a circuit built in to provide the flash voltage. That's why they don't need the Tactrix 2.0 and can just use a cheaper 1.3U cable. The nice thing about the 2.0 is that you can stick an SD memory card in it and log without having to have a laptop in the car. It's a convienent feature that really makes the Tactrix 2.0 easier to use in that aspect.

AH! totally understand now. thanks everyone!:hellyeah:

the fact that it's a mono plug clears alot up, I wasn't even sure how i was going to pin a stereo plug in LOL
