:talon: Just bought a 1991 Turbo. Car has 88,000 miles but seems to idle funny when you first start it. Seems to run great at speed or on the highway. I only have a problem with it sitting at a stoplight or idle.

If anyone has any suggestions on what could be causing the rough idle please let me know. As I new Turbo owner I need all the help I can get. Thanks.

It might be the wires and plugs. So I bought new ones. They should be here in a week. I got 10.2 mm wires and NGK plugs.

Being a Newbie I tried the search but for some reason didn't get the results I was looking for. So sorry if this is repetative.

Car is idle surging. goes up and then almost wants to die out but it won' cut off. Just kind of scares you like it will. Will driving it it sweet like nothing is wrong with it at all. Weird problem on such a nice car.

BOV = Blow off Valve right:confused: I don't know if it is vented or not. Car is all stock with no modifications. The previous owner changed the oil religiously and car has new tires and new waterpump and timing belt. So I know the timing belt and waterpump and tires are A OK.

This weird idle problem is all I have to solve. Car does not seem to be blowing out any smoke or burning oil. Also no rust.

If you guys can tell me anything else to do or look for I will get my uncle's mechanic to try to help me pinpoint the problem. Otherwise WoW! This car is fast and handles great. I looked underneath it before I bought it and the frame, chassis and shocks and all look great like the car was really well taken care of. Sorry to sound like such a noob but I jumped from a 1.8 liter to a Turbo and well..............you know that's a big jump. Thanks sincerely for your help. I do appreciate it.:thumb:

I had the same problem when I first bought my 90 Tsi. Turns out the BISS screw was replaced with some custom idle controlling duct tape:rolleyes: I would check that first since it is the cheapest solution. It could be that the O-Ring around it is just bad

CONGRATS on a nice LOW MILEAGE find!! - I would first change plugs (NGK) - Check Base Timing (when it looks like it's at 4 it's probably at 5 due to angle of view) - & Reset Idle at 850 per VFAQ - Check Engine Coolant Temp Sensor & Connector (talks to FIAV & ECU) - Check virtually all the Vacuum hoses, Vac Hose clamps, the brittle Plastic Vac Line Connectors, EGR could be stuck open a little (old plugs will look like hell)... bad/missing BISS O-Ring is common.

BE CAREFUL here at first - Check/Replace all Coolant hoses & Fluids... Run ONLY Mitsu Oil Filters if you still have the POS Water to Oil Cooler & oh yeah - change your profile & post some pix.

Thanks guys I will do all of your suggestions pronto. I really want to take care of this fine machine. I know what it is and I do appreciate it. I think bad/missing BISS O-Ring might very well be the problem causing this.

I just read this: http://www.myzero.com/engine/surge.html

So I think that's my dilemma. Thanks for all he help. :thumb:

Easy to check - Just put your Thumb over the recess & see if it "seals" - I keep a large Rubber Vac Plug over mine to seal out dirt (see Gallery) - Do check your Base Timing, Vac leaks, etc...
