1G Fan wiring help

Hello!

So I purchased this 1990 eagle talon TSI with some very ghetto stuff going on. They wired some aftermarket slim fans that wouldn’t kick on. Swapped relays and nothing. Come to find out one fan was melted. With the other, I hooked it up to my battery to make sure both weren’t toast and it kicked on just fine. Now im trying to find out how to wire the fans in correctly (ordered another fan). There’s a wire cluster coming from under the overflow tank with a white adapter that the PO seems to have jumped. I’m not sure why? Also there is a blue and black wire on that same bundle. I’m giessing power and ground for the fans but I could definitely use some help. Thanks!

Your fans are turned on by a thermal switch in the bottom of the radiator by the bottom hose. When that switch gets hot enough, it makes a connection to ground that activates the fan relay and kicks the fans on.

I should also note I have an aftermarket radiator. Hence the crappy wiring I’m guessing.

I run all that stuff so since mine are 90 cars and yours is to, I should be able to answer alot of questions.
I can have pictures tomorrow. Gotta pull my motor this week so I will be right there.
My aftermarket radiator has the switch in the same place.

Sounds good man! My harness is pretty chopped and I’m not really sure what wire goes where or which is power/ground so I’ll have to take a multimeter to it or try and pick someone’s brain

The PO probably wanted the fans on all the time so he jumpered that thermal switch (common mod for overheating).

Oh okay that’s good to know. The issue at hand now is the fans weren’t kicking on at all and I switched relays. So I think he may have wired them incorrectly. But I’m not sure what wire is what.

I can get you wire colors since I hate hacking my harness, I make adaptor harnesses so I'm not cutting out original wiring....and I have 3 other 1990 dsm's so I know I can get you original wiring details as all of mine have stock wiring still.

If you are using the thermal switch on the radiator (or the thermostat as I used to-people claim the thermostat location is a more accurate spot to measure engine temps), you don't actually have to use the wiring the PO used. You can make your own wiring. The switch will switch on (pun) the relays at a certain temperature and turn them off at another temp.

As in @Vegas smith very nice drawing, the coolant temp switch wires are green and black.
I promised a picture (since its worth 1000 words...poke poke).
