Facebook's destructive impact on car culture, tech info, and automotive communities

It’s disheartening to see all of the same questions about some of the same exact topics that have been discussed so many times here get asked over in the DSM groups on FB on a daily basis. It’s as if an organized, searchable resource doesn’t already exist. Like there’s an alternate reality where Google is inaccessible. Or as if “newer” responses will be “better” somehow. It’s amazing how much disregard there is for readily available existing information from DSMers who have been around a while. 😔 🤪

I almost started typing up a reply with a link to a relevant thread but then decided not to waste my time. Not sure why so many others waste theirs. It’s just disheartening.

The continuous reinvention of the wheel on Groundhog Day will start again at midnight on FecesBook. If you experience deja vu you might just be in the matrix.
People use Facebook over the forums because you can often get responses in seconds/minutes rather than hours or days. However, the responses are almost always shit. Usually you'll get a few words in a response. Two sentences max. People often don't answer follow-up questions you have. A lot of people don't even bother reading your post, so they just suggest things you already said you did in the post. It's extremely frustrating. Every time I post on the Facebook groups, I warn my wife. "Just made the mistake of posting in the Facebook group again".

You gotta love FB's default sorting of comments ("relevant comments first"), and the way they hide replies, forcing the reader to expand more, expand more, expand more. Makes it real easy to follow a discussion, let alone chime in with a strong comment that hasn't already been posted.

Yeah, I know....

:beatentodeath:

We should start a FB 30 day fasting challenge - see how many DSMers we can get who regularly post on FB (DSM-related stuff), whether it be on their wall or in FB groups, to go on a 30 day FB fast. Don't post anything DSM-related on FB in that time. Post all your DSM related content here in the forum instead. Can you do it?

Maybe we specify a month... like October! I'd bet money people would go through withdrawals with their phone pinging with FB updates.

When we get some traction on the movement we'll add another month. FB Free October, and then FB Free February. We'll help you work towards getting clean and sober. We have people here in the forum to support you if you feel like you're going to fall off the wagon, fiending for another hit of that FB dopamine addiction. We get it. They've spent billions engineering their social crack network. Members are standing by to help.

"Clean and Sober".....gotta love ya Chris 😍
We can only hope it helps! ;)
I'm Here, and only Here, for those that need a helping hand!

I regularly quit facebook, usually for like 4-6 months at a time. This time around I honestly have like 10-15 people on my friends list, and at any point I'll cull it even smaller. I don't keep people on my list that don't interact with me, or that I don't know in person. I'm honestly to the point where I'll probably just delete it entirely soon and not come back. It's less and less useful. I never seem to buy anything off of FB anymore, it seems to only be from a select group of people I know or the forums here. FB groups are useless as mentioned above.

But yeah TL;DR, I ain't skurred of a FB 30 day detox. I don't have FB notifications enabled on my phone as it is.

Super good reason for me to say I have never ONCE stepped a foot into FB. Didn't need it when I have such A SUPER RESOURCE CALLED DSMTUNERS.COM!
🖕Excuse me, but that is what I think about sharing ANY KIND OF INFORMATION over there. Cars, personal stuff, bullshit, hearsay, etc.
Boy am I glad I've never experienced it and I am still digging up old cars (surprises await).

😞😣 it's only getting worse.
That instant answer generation man, tell me now!! I remember when I got my first DSM my buddy said, get ready. And I didn't know what that meant until I had my first small repair/issue. And I was on the tuners forum, searching and finding all kinds of information and learning a lot In the process!! It was what led me to start researching everything and anything I was working on there on out vs asking for the answer or someone else doing it.
