EvoIII 16G possible disapointment??

I just purchased a 20G off of an internet store i wanted a TD06 20G turbo and by accedent recieved a TD05 16G with EVOIII stamped on it. Since the store was closed today to ask them why i got the wrong turbo i looked it up. DSMparts.com and Slowboyracing.com both say that this turbo is awsome and it does look nice... but i have a 2G GSX with a 14B on it now off of a 1g car and i dont know if im going to even feel a difference going from the 14B to the 16G... THEY LOOK LIKE THE SAME SIZE! i couldnt even tell them apart if they were side by side... I dont know, every 16G guy said that they want MORE out of there turbo's but when i did research on this 16G it seems to be "the best one on the market" (slowboy) and they even said that they made 400WHP on it... if anyone has this turbo or knows anyone running this let me know. Im running 14.1's at the track and i want to get at least into the 13.5 range by the end of next month, i just hope this turbo will put me there...

Well you definitely need to contact the person you bought it from and tell them to make things right. If you are intending on keeping the turbo make sure to be refunded the difference because I'm sure the 20g sells for a lot more than a 16g. If you are only looking to run 13's the 16g will do that and then some so it should be plenty for you. You will feel the difference over the 14b. The TD06 20g is a badass turbo though, it is very streetable but the 16g is gonna spool faster so if you are daily driving you might want to stick with that.

Um no Mitsu turbo says EVO III on it anywhere. You have a knockoff GT 16g evo3 turbo on your hands such as the ones turbochargers.com sells. Read " you got something totally different then what you ordered".

The inlet of the compressor side of the 16g isnt much larger then a 14b. The blade profile and outer dimensions are what matter when it comes to the 16g.

You can easily get into the low 13's with crap mods on a 16g turbo, I managed a 12.7@96 at an open track nite not to long ago with the ebc set at 15 psi.

Curious, how much did you pay for that? It's definitely a knock-off Evo3 Big 16g if it actually says EVOIII on the compressor housing. Some say it's crap, some say it works fine.

Ive read people on the quarter mile times that ran 12's with a 14b. Mabye it was gutted, but you have a BIGGER turbo then that, of corse you can get even twelves. Just check out someones profile after reading their time slip. Just hope you can drive.

20g turbos dont go for $399. not even the small or big MHI 16g's dont go for $399.
you my friend got the knock off version of the 16g thats not worth anything. return it and get a genuine 16g even if its used.

I'd disagree... it'd make me far too nervous, running a powder-form compressor wheel; overheat it, stress it, hit a harsh bump at the wrong time when it's spooled... I've seen how brittle that crap is, and I'd rather not have compressor wheel blade chips getting stuck in my intercooler (best case) or getting through to scratch up the piston walls.

Yes, the 16G and B16G use the same compressor housing as the 14b, the TD05H. The 20G uses a TD06H housing, if memory serves, is significantly larger, and is a bottom-output turbo, rather than a top-output like the 14b/16g.

Congrats, you got shipped a piece of junk. If it were my own vehicle, I would not risk running with it... instead ask politely, then raise a sh**storm with whoever mis-shipped it if they refuse to exchange it for the proper turbo. There's no comparison between a MHI and some chinese POS.

I have the turbo he bought been using it for 6 months now. Supposedly its got a 20g wheel in it. Its a knock off sleeper 16g basically. It was way better than my t25 thats for damn sure. It doesnt have any shaft play yet but only time will tell. Im happy with it.

Yea, Its got a 20g wheel stuffed in the 14b/16g housing. Buddy went 12.0 @ 114 on this turbo last year.

MHI are the ones setting records and good hp, I just go with whats proven and domt cheap out on important parts.

My car has no fuel and a crappy 2.5 cat back no tune I ran a 14.1 with a 2.4 sixty foot and my clutch slipped into 3rd and 4th and i bog lauched im sure with fuel and a tune an awd this would be and easy 11 second turbo theres a vid in my pro if you wanna see my run.

What people are skeptical about is its reliablity. The MHI-16g's have just been around LONGER and have a PROVEN reliablity record.

For the EVO-III GT's, they just haven't been around as long to prove themselves. Supposedly there are "horror" stories out there that have been spread by people with no personal experience with the turbo... and natrually, with any new item, you'll hear more (about) bad news than good news. Most people don't normally make long winded posts about " THIS TURBO IS SO GOOD", but people do make long b*tching rants about stupid failing parts (XS/SS).

That being said, there are people out there who have been sucessful with the Evo 16G GT. But I wouldn't know. I've never had personal experience with the turbo.

On topic: 20G and the 16G... What are your goals? Both are good turbos, but which one is better is completely dependant on your goals/budget.

someone asked what are my goals... honistly i would be VERY VERY happy pulling a 12.999! thats my goal but im taking it one step at a time u cant go from 14.1 to 12.9 overnight. Money is no option thats why i want the FP green at one point that turbo is $1,500!! anyways im going to try it out and see what happenes after my install ill run it an keep you guys posted on how it held up ( or didnt hold up ) to the EVOIII name...

You should be able to pull of a 12.9 easily with a bastard 20g. I have a fp red that my awd talon is going on my car in the next couple months.

I just buy things once, and only when there proven thats all. It could be good, but I just wouldnt buy it.

If it is a good turbo, you should have no problems hitting 12.9

By any chance did you buy this turbo off Ebay? Like has been said, first off its not a real Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) evoIII16g, they don't say evoIII on them. You said you ordered a 20g & paid $399, I recall seeing an Ebay add for a 20g and they had a knock off 16g pictured, think it was around that price too. If this is what you bought, I would say you should have done a little more research and should have questioned why they are selling a 20g for so cheep. The turbo in that add isn't even the GT knock off version of the evoIII, it is another knock off & who knows as far as quality goes. A link would be great, but if this is the turbo you purchased I would be getting my money back.

Im not trying to get anything started but I have a Evo16ggt.I bought mine from Turbochargers.com about 6 months ago, so far i have not had one problem with the turbo.Im tired everybody talking s@#$ about it. Dont knock it untill you try it. I had the choice between the True evoIII or the knock off. Because they are the same price. With the knock off I got a 1 year warranty with no boost creep!!!! Everybody has their own opinion, I just expressing mine.If i blow it up in 6 months I will trade it for a true evoIII, because thats why I bought to find out for myself. Sorry if a ruffled any feathers.
