Evo steering rack/column swap possibility?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Steering wheel diameter doesn't change anything. The gearing is all set in the rack itself. You never know an Evo rack could fit, but it would most likely be a 5-7 rack.

Here is another company that I believe makes some good stuff. Some people from the syty ommunity use them.

Chris, why not check on your evo site and see if some Denver guys have a spare rack or check the yards up there for one? Heck, you could always buy one at a parts store to check and just return it if it doesn't work out. Have you checked how many splines the output is and if we could just use our column? I've been wondering about this for a while now too.

123abc: I think he's thinking the 8-9 evos unless the previous versions also share the tighter ratio, in which case they'd be an improvement too.

I'm thinking an older Evo, like a n Evo 6 or older. The new Evos would be very costly. But then again, the older ones could be touch because they weren't imported. I'm just wondering if we could still get them cheaper, and of course, whether or not they'd even work out.

Well, hey, we could always just get a refurbed Evo 8 steering rack for $300 and try it out:

I wonder.... maybe when I get some extra cash I'll try it. I put a note into that site to see if they might be able to take a look at the two racks and see if it might be possible. My guess is that I'd have to just buy one and try it.

Since you're talking about the right hand drive Evos, I'm gonna say not.

Thanks for the "clarification".......I realize the steering wheel size does not change the rack ratio.

The original questions was how to make the steering more responsive. A smaller diameter wheel will make the system feel more responsive, as the same steering input will cause the front wheels to turn further.

I went to a 270mm wheel in my track car from a 320mm wheel and there is a big difference. Same rack.

Evos had a better steering setup. I'm just trying to see if there's a way to swap in some more Evo parts.

Exactly why I was interested. Tighter ratio and from when I drove one it felt like tighter tolerances too. Less wiggle before the car moved. A smaller steering wheel helps but it doesn't change the lock-to-lock value.

The hardcore STI guys around here run the quickener to bring the lazy 15:1 ratio closer to the EVO 13:1. Our DSMs are 15.8:1..........

PS--Chris - my car is apart again, but I can put up some past pics if you'd like, the car either doesn't see the light of day, or it's changing rapidly, which is now.....

Just post the most recent Phil! My photos are very out of date, but I've still got some posted :)
