Evo 8 ECU In 2g Works!!

I switched to just a basic 96530006 rom, but I don't see the MAF scaling option listed. Plus, for some reason I have to have my injector size set to 513cc to keep from maxing out the fuel trims.

This is what I'm currently seeing listed under EcuFlash. I do have it set to developer mode.
I haven't gone into boost yet, but I did take it for a spin down the road and back. I'm not throwing any CELs at all.

I've adjusted:
Lean Spool Start to 9000RPM
Lean Spool Stop to 9000RPM
Periphery 0 bit 3 to 0 (disabled immobilizer)
Injector Battery Voltage Latency.... to what it needs for 450cc (listed earlier in this thread)
Injector scaling is at 513cc because 424cc and 450cc didn't help.
MAF size to 260

When I try to load it using the tephra xml file, I see the MAF scaling, but the load is off by a factor of 10 and I can't enter decimals.

If someone has a 100% clean 96530006 rom I could start with, that would be great, because I pulled this one off EvoEcu and I'm not sure if it's been messed with before uploading.

Maybe I need a different .xml file. I did do the latest update of EcuFlash.

513 is where the factory sets it for the evo8 560cc's, i think the other eclipse guys are setting them near the 410 range. sounds like you still need to adjust your MAF scaling. as far as the scaling is concerned i think it is actually a little more actuate based what my MAFT gen2 says it reads MAF Hz around 20 - 21 at idle not 200 - 210. your best for a clean rom would probably be a Tephra mod rom. i could have sworn i posted a 96530006 somewhere in this post but if not i have a clean rom that i can post.

So, I've tinkered with it some more this morning. I've several other things to no avail.

However, I have noticed that my fuel trims are all over the place during idle. They aren't holding steady at all. At one point, it will pull 17% fuel to hold 14.7AFR at idle then 15 seconds later, it will be adding 12% to hold the same 14.7AFR.

It does drive, but I'm getting that midrange knock mentioned before. Since the timing is less than the 2g map and my AFRs are ok at that point, I'm thinking that I may need to adjust the sensitivity.

If you want to check out the ROM I'm using (and maybe help me figure out what's wrong :sneaky:) just change the .doc to .hex

i wounder if it might be something screwy with the ROM you downloaded. try this one to see. it is a Tephra mod 5.1 ROM with the following. all the Tephra mods off except flash cel on knock, immobilizer disabled, MAF and injectors rescaled and MAF scaling adjusted to 2G eclipse. i also applied the continuous monitor completion patch so if you want to remove your rear O2 you can with out getting a CEL. try loading this ROM and see what happens also if you can post a log with showing MAF Hz, trims, and temps that might help.

I loaded that ROM. It's running the same way any of the 96530006 ROMs ran.

But I did manage to kick this code:
Updated: 18:53:02
1 Diagnostic Trouble Codes Found:
----------------------------------------------
P0125 Excessive Time to Enter Closed Loop Fuel Control.

Here are the two logs zipped. Geocities wouldn't let me upload them as .csv
www.geocities.com/wesshaw24/logs.zip

It seemed to settle on a -6% low LTFT. That's what I had pulled with the SAFC across the board at low throttle before, so that's normal. But still, while I was driving, I was maxing out the STFT at -25% in a few spots.

Other than that, I got two spikes horrible knock, doubt it was real knock though.

UPDATE:
I decided to give the 9055 Tephra v5.10 ROM a try. It's working better than any of the 9653 ROMs. Fuel trims are still off, with the low LTFT being -12%, but other than that, it seems to run decently. I don't get knock until I go into boost, but I think that may just be a tuning issue. It seems knock happy just as I enter boost. I start knocking at 2700RPM with about 125% load. I'm still using the stock fuel and timing maps. The maps give me an 13.3AFR and 19* of timing. The wideband says I'm between 10.7 and 11.3 across that range.

Hopefully I'll get around to tuning it some tomorrow and see where that gets me.

well. looks like i might be out of the game for a bit so i might not be reachable on this forum, my car got totaled... so i wont be tuning for a while....any questions about my setup though please feel free pm me.

I liked hosting all my files on a Geocities site, but they're shutting down the free sites in October.

Otherwise, the only way I've seen to host them, at least on here, is to rename them with an acceptable extension and then have the downloader rename them back to the correct extension. A pain, but it works.

I have unlimited storage for a website I administer but ftping it from home is a PITA and I'm not sure it is entirely appropriate to use work resources for personal endeavors even if they are literally unlimited. I posted a thread in the site problems section asking if someone important could look into changing the accepted file extensions.

Right there with you. My Talon was totalled on Monday night. Any extra parts I could save will be listed in the classifieds if there seems to be any interest. There's a thread in the Hangout with lots of pictures and all the details on what happened, look for the title "don't remove your airbag module."

If anyone's interested in a slightly used Evo 8 ECU and a DSM patch harness, all pinouts correctly swapped, set up for stock 2G MAS and 450cc injectors... feel free to PM me. The only major issues I've had with the 9653 rom were the open loop code Wes also has and the extra sensitive knock system everyone else is also dealing with. Maybe my small effort can still be put to good use by another DSMer.

Has anyone tried to resolve the knock issues? I was messing around with timing and fuel today, but I can't seem to get it to consistently hold a slightly richer AFR. That may be due to my newb-ness when it comes to tuning. I got the timing to drop consistantly, but if I can get the AFR to hold steady at 10.5 every run, it might help rule out real knock.

On the plus side, I'm at the point where I don't exceed 8 counts of knock too often anymore. There were points were I was spiking to 22+.

Try driving some more, it will spike above 8 again.

What you need are the knock control tables to be defined in your xml and then you raise the threshhold of your knock multiplier. This increases the point at which noise becomes knock. The easiest way to rule out real knock is just to throw a tank of race gas in, if it goes away you have real knock. Jrohner and I talked about the definitions a few pages ago you can look there or search evolutionm.

I've wondered if we could use an evo knock sensor and the problem might go away but no one has been willing to pony up the $60 bucks.

I looked up the part numbers for the knock sensors for the 2g and the Evo, hoping that the Evo one's were just newer looking, and the replacement parts would be the same.

They're different. I'm tempted to order one and sell the used one from my car to offset some of the cost. Messing with the knock multipliers can't be the best solution.
Too bad they aren't on sale like the 2g ones are. $31 for a knock sensor would be sweet.

I did raise my low multiplier from 13 to 18. I'm still getting some knock, but no where near as much, or as often.

The knock thing may be just a difference in the engines that needs to be adjusted for. I would've actually thought the Evo knock sensing would be under-sensitive on our cars since Evo engines seem so noisy, not the other way around. It may be nothing like that however, because I've seen quite a bit about knock issues on Evos over on EvolutionM. Not quite as bad as 1G phantom knock, but that's partly because of the tables being defined so people can easily get rid of it unlike the 1G's. The problem is more often with guys that have built engines from what I've gathered.

My low multiplier is as 21. This isn't really a heavy-handed approach even though it seems like you are raising the number a lot, real knock is loud and if it is missed at first it will quickly become violent enough for even a deaf knock system to detect and quench it. You really aren't (IMO) risking your engine at all with even large changes to the knock multipliers. The load vs knock table may be a different story though.

Map switching can be done using a harness and a toggle that you build, or using the ICS button (which we don't have). In v7 you can switch maps by TPS input which is where you basically turn the ignition on but don't start the engine then you hold the throttle down for a couple seconds then start.

I was plagued with the knock issue as well and the solution i found to work best for me so far is to up the threshold for knock in the certain rpm range all my phantom knocked occurred. Honestly if you have a real knock issue even with the knock sensor a little de sensitized you'll still pull timing and the ecu will still try to make the corrections.

I've bumped my low from 13 up to 21 and I still occasionally get 3+ counts of knock. Being the mid multiplyer is 61, I think that shows that we could bump it quite a bit and still hear real knock.

So what settings have you changed to help you?

I have my low set at 20 i believe that seems to work best for me. And like i was saying there is a good amount of room to play with here since real knock will still come through and your not going to really blow anything up unless you go crazy with it.

I have a question for any guys running a EVO ECU with a 2G MAF.

Which values did you copy over?

I'm sure you should copy MAF Size and Scaling.

But did you also copy MAF Smoothing and MAF Filter?
Also many of the DEFs don't have MAF Adder, but that is different as well.

And how much fine tuning did you have to do to get it right on?

Thanks much for any info.
