My engine was making knocking noises and then finally heard a hard knock as i pulled up the driveway and the engine was dead.SO i pulled the engine completely out, took off everything and dropped the oilpan and bolts inside around crank area.Shined flashlight up to see piston rods etc. They were all there and didnt see anything like a broken rod or anything wrong. No metal shavings in oil pan BUT when i put a socket on the end of the crank and try to turn it with all i got,it is completely frozen up and wont turn either way.All there is left to the engine now is basically crankshaft and pistons.the crank wont budge either way to check for crankwalk either. What could this be? Could the crank bearings have froze on each end? The car had clean oil in it so i dont think the pistons froze or anything.Could piston rings have slipped between the piston wall and the piston itself to cause this? I am pretty new to this stuff but have enough mechanical skills to drop the engine etc.Can someone help me diagnose this please? Under the oil pan,I took out the metal plate and the screen filter thing and then pulled off all 8 or 10 of those long bolts that go up in the engine to secure the crankshaft. What else is holding these in? How do i drop the crank from here? I cant turn the crank to loosen the piston rods away from the crank ,cause most of the bolts are where i would have to turn the crankshaft.Help Please, Thanks. Travis

Sounds to me like you spun a main bearing. You should be able to remove the bearing caps off of the pistons. Try using a wrench instead of a socket. Use a long extension for the pistons that are all the way up. Once you have the pistons and your main bearing caps off, the crank will lift out.

If i spun a main bearing would that be fixable? just buy a new bearing assembly? A long socket wont work cause the angle of the bolts is kinda sideways in there.Would it be possible to put a huge cheater bar on the crank end and see what happens? Or would that mess up the block itself. If a main bearing is spun..is there usually damage to the block? Thanks for the input,Travis

At first i couldnt get that bottom bracket off, thats why i couldnt reach the piston ends...Okay i got the bracket dropped and found piston #1 where the piston attaches to the crankshaft had only part of the sleeve and the rest metal shavings ground into the crankshaft where it connects.I am not good with what these parts are called so can someone help in what the collar things are.Are they rod bearings? If they are ..They are only metal sleeves? The pistons and everything seem to be fine. What is the bracket called the the crankshaft sits on also.So all i need to do is get a new crankshaft and sleeves? What could cause this to happen in a car? Once the crankshaft was free i tried to check for crank play back and forth and it seems like no sign of crankwalk.even though i didnt use one of those digital readers.Anyway can someone please answer most of the questions i have throught this post? Thanks heres a pic.On far left there is the half of a sleeve.the other half is ground around the crankshaft.SO is this a "SPUN ROD BEARING"???

Okay... see that middle part of the bracket (don't know the name either), and how its copper looking?? Not enough oil going to that bearing and could've cause this WHOLE problem for you.

Take a crowbar and GENTLY!!! Wedge it between the crank and a solid ledge/surface and try to pry in either direction slowly but firmly. If it moves even the SLIGHTTEST, your phucked man... join the club!!!!!

either way man.. you need to start shopping for 1g motors... Cuz, even rod knock is not a good thing... lets face it, all of this happened because you have a 2g motor that has a poor "oil gally" design which keeps your crank bearings nice and dry! Even if you try to fix this one, you're going to have MORE problems in the future.

Just get a 1g motor man... you're going to have to write this one off. JUST MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOUR EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND THROTTLE BODY INLET PIPE, since they are better than the ones the 1G motor comes with... I found that out the hard way and had to buy that crap back!

And PLEASE put a new timing assemble in whatever motor you buy.. I found that one out the hard way too and had to rebuild my new motor... no good. :thumbdown

I got a built 1g 6bolt with 1g heads with an EVO3 Turbo and Exhaust manifold. It is all ready to go in but i still need to pull the ecu and do wiring and everything.Plus figure out the coolant lines and where they go. I am taking apart this 7bolt to see actually what the hell happened and how much of this 2g engine i can sell in the classified section.I will probably put the 2g stuff up for sale tonight with pics.Everything but the bottom end is good,so im getting rid of the heads, turbo, manifold and everything. I will check with a prybar the tolerance. So what is left holding on my crankshaft?I dropped everything else but the crank. How does it come off the ends of the block? So i cant get money out og that engine block probably? Whats the best thing to do with it?Get money for scrap metal or check tolerances and try to sell it if its not crankwalk. Thanks for the inputs.

What is the small "timing belt looking thing" below the water pump and behind timing belt?I should know this if i am tearing apart a whole engine but im learning...Thanks for the help,Travis

that is your balance shaft belt-sprocket-tensioner pulley. If your planning to put in a 6-bolt you may want to consider removing the balance shafts. less stuff to go wrong and they say more oil pressure and power.

I already have a built 6bolt with balance shafts removed, ready to go in. I got the engine with them already removed so i wasnt sure of thats what it was on this 7bolt. Thanks for the help.I will probably pull all of it apart just to see how it all works. Thanks,Travis

What's up Travis. Sucks all this didn't happen while we were still at Oceana, I coulda helped you out. Navy stuck me in Lemoore. But my crank walked about a month before I transferred so I had to do the engine swap at Oceana. I see you x-rated, how's that working out for ya? Anyway, car's lookin' good. Gimme a shout.--Kevin
