medicine hat,
i was told that to remove the engine out of my car that you have to pull the engine out through the bottom of the car...is this true???? how long does it ussually take to remove and put a different motor in these cars??

I always pull both, both 1g, and 2g.

just have the engine side Higher than the tranny side, and itll slip right out.
I just have a buddy on the crane while i position the motor+trans in the correct position for liftout.
Same here. The tranny mount is the only difference between 1g and 2g.

Clearly everyone has their own opinion, but I can have my motor on the ground in less than 2-3 hours from a start. I can have it in in less than 3-4, from ground to running. This is with air tools, and unfortunatly I have had to pull it 4 times since christmas.(dont ask) I unbolt the trans and leave it hooked up in the car. It makes it much easier to get it running again, its just less to hook back up. Just my .02.

You have to Pull everything Off the trans Anyway, except the shifter cables,

have to drop the xcase, pull the axles, ubolt the trans, and the trans mout to move it around.

i have never left one in the car tho, it just seems a LOT easier to dik with the trans and engine connector on the floor. than crunched up under and car turning bolts.

The only thing that I unhook from the trans is the motor. Im not arguing im just telling you how I do it. It probably wouldnt work as good on a AWD car, but for a FWD it's alot quicker(for me) to not mess with the trans. As for putting the motor back in its not that bad, its alot quicker than reinstalling a tranmission. Just my .02

Ok everyone I have a 90 GSX and I am pulling the motor the car is on jack stands. Do I have to pull the tranny with the motor or without please hurry. Need help fast.

Best way is to DROP Motor AND tranny DOWN as an Assembly & even lift body UP as needed - If you split tranny & Motor in car you still catch total HELL going up with Motor from what I recall on the Boards over the years... GOOD LUCK~!

^^^^^That is how I always did it before I got My crane with the balancing arm. With the balancer, it allows you to lift only the timing side and let the end of the tranny drop enough to clear the frame and the whole thing lifts out. But again, as stated, it is more a matter of personal preference.

When I pulled mine, I just attached the chains to the engine more so than the trans, and lifted it up first. With a picker it is really pretty easy to pull it out, even with ABS

To pull the moter without the tranny, u have to basically pull the tranny out and over to the side in order for the engine to clear when lifting it. I would just lifts the tranny with the engine at the same time, its fairly easy taking it out, but putting it back in is a little tricky but with a little effort and a few people to help, its not too bad.

I can drop my 1G trans in 30 minutes w/ a floor jack. After this, it is infinitely easier to pick up the engine from the bay instead of otherwise. This is why I like a 1G over a 2G.
Add 45 mins to an hour more, and I have the whole assembly out.

I'm doing a clutch job, timing belt, and balance shaft elimination. I'm using a cherry picker to pull the engine out of the car. So in my case would it be easiest to leave the tranny in the car and just pull the engine out? Or should I drop the transmission, then pull the engine out of the car? Or lastly should I pull them both out together, then seperate when out of the car, then put back together, and dropped back in?

This is on a 92 Galant VR4, btw.

id pull it all out together.. but remember you must disconnect the tcase and take it off first

Hey guys got question, How do you seperate the engine from the tranny I got all the bolts out what I can't seem to figure out is the driveplate and the four bolts that are in it, I need some hints here.

I checked my chiltons it tells me to remove them not really how unless I miss something, and the vfaq that I checked isn't operating at this moment so help me out thanks.

You need to crawl under the car, remove the little access cover for the tranny, and turn the crank by hand with a ratchet to get those bolts where you can see one at a time. Remove one, and turn it again till the next one is accessable and so on.

It's actually much easier to pull the engine and tranny together. That's how we did it on my 2G this weekend. Granted, we were wicked tired and ended up putting a hole in my AC condenser and spraying freon everywhere, but hey, good excuse for a little weight reduction.

Your transmission is bolted onto the motor. I've heard many people removing the tranny to change the clutch out without lifting the motor, but removing the motor w/o the tranny?

I did it...I only had a few hours with a cherry picker. I ended up cracking the bellhousing on my transmission. Luckly a guy on here had a spare one and i'm in the process of all that crap...

I went through all of the trouble of doing it, only to find out that i had a cracked bell housing at the diff. so i had to take them both out anyways! :p

I am trying to hoist the engine out of the engine bay but I am having trouble because the flywheel, clutch, etc. will not come out of the bell housing. The bottom and front are all the way out but I am having no luck prying the top half (towards the rear) out of the bell housing. Any suggestions?
