medicine hat,
i was told that to remove the engine out of my car that you have to pull the engine out through the bottom of the car...is this true???? how long does it ussually take to remove and put a different motor in these cars??

To make things one million times easier to do....
Pull the transfer Case off first, its only 5 bolts.
Also the chiltons was alot more help with engine removal than haynes ever wanted to be.
With the case off and everything else on, it is alot easier to monkey that bad boy outta there, tranny and all.

Hmm, I'm going to disagree:

Axles out
Wiring unplugged
Hoses undone that stay in the engine bay
Motor mounts undone
Anything else super obvious that can't come with the motor

Pull the motor with everything on it, manifolds, tranny, etc, it will wiggle out, have faith.

I do recommend getting the radiator out first though, or else it will get the crap banged out of it.

^^^i 2nd this, while its out you should think about converting it to a 5spd. i did it and its much easier than you would imagine, if you have some money to do it. if you decide to do that you can pull the engine and tranny at the same time. If you need any info on an auto to manual swap i can give it to you. good luck

I already have a 5 speed eclipse, I am doing this one because i got a killer deal on the price and the car is pretty awesome shape other then the engine. it is a 2wd and as far as an auto goes, I just want to use this for a daily drive so i can consentrate on the eclipse. Right now, I have the battery and intake out, the upper and lower intercooler pipes out upper radiator hose and the driveside engine mount. I am alittle stumped on the automatic cooler lines though, mainly where to disconnect them not what to disconnect.

im trying to remove my 4g63t from my awd tsi talon 90' and have been stumped on how to properly do this. i have everything unbolted from the engine and its being supported by a cherry picker. my problem is i dont know how to unbolt it from the transmission. a friend suggested pulling the motor and transmission out together but im running into some problems with that as well. i found a guide that shows where the drain plug is for the transmission fluid but what do i do to remove the transfer case from the transmission and what about the fron axles? can some one please help, im sitting inside the car as i write this trying to figure it out.

Have u pulled the axles out yet? Also have u disconected the transfer case so that the driveshaft isnt holding it down? Another thing, get a chiltons manual....

You need a manual for that. Your suppose to take off the hood and radiator, then your suppose to take off the engine and tranny out together from the top (obivously you have to unbolt stuff here and there). Many people on this board have done these swaps, just search it on dsmtuners. Remember, get the factory or Haynes manuals before you attempt anything.

i have a chiltons but those manuals dont really help any. the only thing i have done to the transmission is remove the wire for the reverse light, speedometer cable, and cables for the shifter. i dont have much room to work underneath the car so this doesnt help me with things either. No the transfer case, drive shaft, or axels have not been removed yet.

Your suppose to remove the CV shafts, transfercase and drive shaft from the transfercase before you try to remove the engine. I highly recommend removing the engine and tranny together.

A manual tells you everything that needs to be unhooked, so he would have never needed to ask this question.

Start by putting the front of the car on jack stands. Next get under the car and remove the 5 bolts that hold the transfer case to the transmission. Next unbolt the driver side axle support, it is right underneth the airconditoning pump. While your under the car remove the passanger side cross bar, it is held in by 4 small bolts in the rear and 2 lager bolt by the radiator. Next remove the wheels, behind the strut tower is a 12mm bolt holding the brake fluid line, unbolt that. Next the nut and bolt assembly that hold the strut to the hub assemble need to be unbolted, there are 2 for each side. This will allow you to get a small pry bar and pull the hub ass. away from the strut ass. Once you have this done now you can remove the axles out of the tranny. Now from here you can try to bring it up throught the top or remove the tranny and drop it out the bottom and then remove the engine. One more thing, when you remove the bolts for the transfer case you will have to pry it out with a small pry bar, and it is heavier than it looks. Good luck.

This is what I did....

Removed exhaust, unbolted the 5 bolts from the transfer case, popped that off and put a cable underneath the driveshaft. Went ahead and unbolted the transmission, took that off and put it aside. Of course I took my motor out piece by piece, head went off first, then the tranny, then the block.

Before you take the axles out, unbolt the ginormous crown nut from the axle where it goes into the hub assembly. To remove the axles from the transmission you'll have to grab a flat head screwdriver or a smaller crowbar. Put it inbetween where the axle and transmission come together and give it a good pop, should usually come off. For the driver's side though, you'll want to unbolt the halfshaft from the block before anything so you don't rip a cv boot. After your axles are out, your transmission should come off, if I recall correctly 4-5 bolts hold it on, check your Chilton's manual for that.

Now that the transmission is out, it should be A LOT easier and lighter to remove the rest of the motor out. Bingo it's out! You should have a lot easier time removing it after a few things are gone.

I've pulled motors on both my FWD 1g and my AWD 1g. Its basically the same, but the first time on the FWD i disconnected the tranny and dropped it out through the bottom It was a a PITA. I'd recomend taking out the motor and tranny at the same time. THen you don't have to deal with the hassle of taking off your cross members and trying to get to the tranny bolts in the car. You need to take off the T-case and axles just like the other members have said. When you have everything removed, bring the motor up on a slant, with the tranny facing down. This is so you can clear the abs unit. Good luck!

Im removing the motor from my 1g dsm. I have everything removed and now I need to support the motor. This is my first motor pull so my problem is where do I bolt the chains from the engine load leveler(cherry picker) to the block. I know not to bolt to aluminum so does any one know exactly what bolts are best. Thanks for any info.

be carefull on the driver side when you go up, first time I did I kinked the ac or power steering lines next to the strut, the pulley will snag there., And dont forget the fuel lines I did :D

If there is no need to drop the tranny, You will have room to just pull the motor. You would need to remove most everything from the timing side to get it to clear, but it can be done. I personally pull both, as there are just a few bolts holding the tranny in anyway and it makes it a quicker job.

Im just the oppisite, I never pull the tranny. I leave it in and just pull the pulleys off of the motor and pull it. You do have to take the bolts out of the tranny mounts so it can move though. It is just one less thing to hook back up when you put the car back together. Alot of people say to pull them together, but most of those have 1g cars. with the trans mount welded to the frame on a 2g it would be hard to pull both together. Just my .02.

I always pull both, both 1g, and 2g.

just have the engine side Higher than the tranny side, and itll slip right out.
I just have a buddy on the crane while i position the motor+trans in the correct position for liftout.
