medicine hat,
i was told that to remove the engine out of my car that you have to pull the engine out through the bottom of the car...is this true???? how long does it ussually take to remove and put a different motor in these cars??

I wish i could just leave the tranny in the car but I guess thats not a real viable option.

The car is a 1990 Eagle Talon TSI AWD.

I'm just getting the motor since the transmission was just rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago.

So has anyone pulled the motor and left the transmission. Was it a huge mess? I would like to save time if i dont have to pull the tranny to.

On my 2G AWD I pulled the motor out like two weeks ago. I pulled it out with the tranny still attached. It was not hard at all, just adjust the chains on the hoist so the tranny side sits lower than the timing side. Once I did that it came out verry easy. Like I said though, that was on a 2G and I am not sure if it is as easy on a 1G. Good luck, JB

yes, pull both the engine and tranny in one piece, no hassle, just like stated above, adjust the chains so that the tranny sits lower then the timing side.
once we had everything disconnencted took about 20 minutes of manuvering to remove it

The thing is that I rather not pull the tranny. Just leave it in the car. Just wanted to know if anyone has just pulled the motor and how bad of a hassell it was compared to pulling both.

i have not done with to this car yet.. but have pulled engines at work, and it's not pull it out that makes it hard and determines weather u should pull it together or seperate... but how hard it is to line back up goin back in... just my $0.02... just look at how difficult that will be

It HAS been tried - you end up hung up like a Dog with his Dick in Vise - Don't go there - many Threads on this.

WELLLL, I'm catching hell with mine....I have EVERYTHING pulled from the engine(car is a 92 TSi AWD) as in cylinder head, alternator, A/C, starter, water pump, turbo, exhaust manifold ect. ect....the engine is unbolted from all the mounts....so it's just the block and the tranny and transfer casing sitting as one....my problem is I can't get the driveaxles separated from the tranny(that and I don't have an engine hoist  )....can I just get them aloose from the tranny or do I need to unbolt them from the hubs as well?? I'm not too experienced as a mechanic myself and this is the first time I've pulled an engine....I was gonna pull the block by itself but there's 3 17mm bolts on the bottom the go into the block and then the tranny and I CANNOT break them loose(u guessed it, no air compress either)...REALLLY frustrating because I already have a brand new cylinder head and a rebuild kit for the block, I just can't get the damn engine out...anybody with some advice would be REALLLLLY helpful, or maybe one of you north FL guys has some spare time and an engine hoist and would like to help a brother out, I'm located in SOUTH GA 'bout an hour from the FL line....

I pulled just the engine from a 91 gsx about a month ago.

It's SO easy to just remove the engine, remember to unbolt the transfer case, it has to be unbolted for the engine to pop off the tranny.

in regards to the tranny and drive shaft i have replace the tranny in my 1.8.. u gotta undo the bolt that connects the hub to the drive shaft, undo like 2 bolts above and slightly behind the hub so it will swing loose... then pry with a screw driver from the tranny side and get the shafts out... and the driver side of a awd i believe has a gear u have to remove on tope of the driveshaft input on the tranny before u can pry.... manuals r very helpful

I just totalled my 1g DSM and i wanna pull the motor so i can either sell it or rebuild it down the line, is there a good guide somewhere to help me? Also... if anybody needs an parts lemme know, i just need to pull this motor out fast so i can get it outta the garage, the old man is gettin kinda mad
