medicine hat,
i was told that to remove the engine out of my car that you have to pull the engine out through the bottom of the car...is this true???? how long does it ussually take to remove and put a different motor in these cars??

If I were you I would take the tranny out with the motor. When I did my swap there was no room to move the motor over to clear the tranny.

I had the smaller non-turbo tranny and I barely made the engine slip out. The back engine mount got in the way too much.

Just take the tranny out. I wasted too much time and effort trying to put the engine back in.

Hello, Thanks for all the help. I guess I will have to pull the tranny out as well, really didnt want to do it. But I rather waste less time and effort. I will be doing the swap over the weekend, hopefully it will go smoothly. Thanks again

i am taking out the motor in my GST, and i have everything undone from the tranny, because i am only trying to take out the longblock. That doesnt seem to be possible, because i tried to raise the motor out, but it wont come out, it is still stuck on the tranny thing, i need to know what to do, or should i just take the tranny out with it? Thanks or can you point me to a faq or something, because i need some info tonight before i start tommorow, Thanks

Not trying to be an ass here & it's OBVIOUS you are confused & certainly catching hell but I posted the closest FAQ for you about 5 hours ago & 6 MINUTES after your OTHER post on this subject ...

1G - but you said quick... looks like they pulled motor & trans - if not that way I think ideally you pull trans FIRST.

Has anyone removed a their 2.0L Turbo with out taking out the head? Where is a good place to use the cherry picker to pull it by? One on the driver side mount? and the other???? Dont feel like removing the head to take out the motor. Another thing do i have to remove the tranny? hopefully not though. i just want to take out the motor and put it right in another. No problem no hassle just remove and put back in. any suggestion?

Take out the axles, t-case, and all other miscelaneous shit, but leave the trans connected to the engine. Use a chain wrapped around the tranny for the other side of the lift. It will come out easily.

there is a place to put your chains....one by the PS pump and one by the cas/throttle body...leave your tranny on, it will be easier....but do pull your transfer case and axles and stuff...

theres a vfaq on engine removal...its not that hard..just take everything off that connects the engine/tranny to the car.

i used one of the large studs on the drivers side motor mount, and i think a tranny bolt for places to put the chain.

Hoist w/ engine balance is the key. 4g63 has to be rocked backwards, and the timing belt side has to come up first for the tranny to clear. (i pulled mine w/ the transfercase still on.)

Also, remove the mount off the tranny through the fender well.

EDIT: took pics of my pull here Http://gigahz.edro13.com/images/brett/talon/thepull
must be nice to have a balancer :p the first time i pulled mine i left my t-case on...i have never cussed more than i did that day LOL

By engine balance, he meant the center of gravity of the motor and tranny as you pull it out. If you have the chains in the wrong spot when you pull it, you could risk the motor slipping and spinning to the floor and on your feet. ouch!! :thumb:

He meant that red thing attached to the cherry picker. The chains run to that. It allows ou to balance the engine better and move it around how you need to pull it out. Look in the first pic in the link posted earlier of someone taking pics of their pull.

Okay so I was wrong. But you dont HAVE to have that bar to do the same job. It will work if you dont have the balance bar. That is honestly the first time I have ever seen that. And I must say that would have come in handy when I pulled the motor from my Ranger. To each his own

Can this be done with the engine still connected to the trans? Last time I had the trans off anyways and then just pulled out the motor, but now I'm wondering if it can be pulled out as 1 unit through the top and how much clearance there is to do this? It would save me a lot of time since I wouldn't have to unbolt that damn trans again till I can actually reach all the bolts. :p

nah man its easier if you pull both at the same time....or at least it was for me. I had it out and back in with the new 6bolt just like that. Just make sure you have a few people to help you out with it...and it will work just have to pull it out at a slight tilt

good luck

did you have to remove the timing belt / covers? I'd like to remove as little as possible till its out fo the car and easy to get to everything. What do you mean by "slight tilt?" ... like about how many degrees? Just wanna get this all figured out before hand. Did you pull of the radiator to give it a little more back and forth movement room? Thanks.

Anytime you remove an engine you want to pull the radiator so that it doesn't get dinged up by a stray wrench or ratchet. I couldn't tell you how many degrees because when I pull a dsm motor I always use a lift and just lift the car off of the motor.

Kind of like this:

Remove the crank pully, water pump pully, then unbolt the front, rear and driver side motor mount. Lift the motor up tilting it up, the pass side tranny mount still bolted to the car. The xcase just be off of course and axles.
Then when you have the oil pan up all the way and clear of the driver side, take the center bolt out of the trans mount and take it all the way out.

I'm going to be removing my old engine and installing a JDM motor in less than a month. I have the Chilton manual and checked out the VFAQ removal. Does anyone has any personal advice (tools to use) or know of another removal/install walkthrough? Just doing as much research I can before i get started.

Yes I have removed and installed motors from a 240z's and Alfa Romeo's in the past but first time for a DSM. Just hate walking blind into a removal.

Thanks
