medicine hat,
i was told that to remove the engine out of my car that you have to pull the engine out through the bottom of the car...is this true???? how long does it ussually take to remove and put a different motor in these cars??

I think everyone pretty much covered it. Basic tools and a cherry picker will take the engine out of your car. As far as the axle nuts go, if you can't get the axle to slide out, you can unbolt the boot from the CV axle and this way you can remove the half shaft without removing the entire axle. Another nifty tip for removing an axle is to unbolt the 2 pairs of 2 bolts that hold the lower lateral and lower control arm to the chassis, Leave the upper control arm so you can just swing the knuckle out.

I need a little advice. I have to rip out the old engine from my 91 GSX to make donor parts for the rebuild in my new DSM. I have no compressor for air powered tools. I was hoping that I could get some help and advice from people who have had to remove their engines in their garages...and what tools you used. I'm going to be using VFAQ.com and the tech forums on here to help me but advice and a general idea of what i'm going to need and what route to take would help a lot.. I need to get the engine on an engine stand....from there I know what I have to do. but I have never removed the engine on my own. TIA!!

That is a pretty broad question. I removed my engine for the first time last summer. There is no tool in particular that you will need. The only thing that saved me in the removal and rebuild was having a mechanic I could call when I got stuck. Are you planning on putting the engine back in or are you just scrapping the car?

Unhook everything and push it as far out of the way as you can, drain coolant and transmission fluid, remove the axles, get a cherry picker and tilt bar. Support the engine with the cherry picker, remove the bolts for all the mounts and pull'er'out. There really isn't much to it. Once you get into it, you'll know what you have to do.

I recommend you label every plug and wire with an ID so you can quickly reference it when your putting things back together. It's easy to forget a grounding wire or where that weird plug goes. I also took alot of pictures on my first engine pull.

Socket sizes needed- 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 23, 32 (I believe for the axel nuts, that or 34)

You will need a couple different sized extensions, as well as some sort of tube to get leverage with.

There's not much too it really, just finished pulling a motor yesterday. Just label if you haven't done it a lot (this was not even close to my first time). Label the vac lines, connectors, bolts into baggies, etc.

Dont forget the shop rags! No matter how clean and detailed we make our engines, you will always get dirty or spill a lil oil or water.

i just pulled mine this summer and that was the first motor i pulled and it wasnt that hard i just disconnected everything and pulled the tranny and motor right out, it came out fairly easy i thought and im doing it again soon so its not to difficult

Hey DSMers

I'd just like some personal tips on removing an engine. I'm not a total newb anymore, but this is why I'm still labeled a newb.

What advice can any experienced people give me out there? Here's what I've done so far:

Removed:
Vac. lines. Intercooler piping. MAF. BOV. Clutch slave cylinder line. Fuel rail. FPR and lines. Injectors. Radiator. Shift linkages.

Currently trying to remove the exhaust. Two simple bolts right. WRONG. They are really stubborn. I'm going for the O2 housing instead. I'm trying to remove it from there.:talon:

What are some other things I will have to remove to physically get the engine out?

motor mounts, cross member bell housing bolts, power steering pump,ac condenser, all sensors. save the mounts for last, except the top one also remove the trans mount so you can angle the engine more.

Transfer case. Front axles. The two wires from the oil filter housing. I'd unbolt the hole p/s pump and push it to the side. a/c lines. Throttle cable. Speed cable. Heater core lines and I think that's it. Just pay attention when its comingmake sure you don't breaks

Having the right tools always helps. You will quickly learn this and have a nice set of tools. 10,12,14,17,24mm sockets will be your best friend. When some bolts are hard to get loose or even rusted soaking them in pb blaster or even liquid wrench helps. When all else fails you can use a cheater bar. A torch and a dremel are also nice thigns to have.

I have only pulled the trans and engine attached together out of a 1g. I am not sure about a 2g without tilting it a lot for the trans to be able to come out. Make sure you support the engine before you take out those last few important bolts! Things like fuel rails and stuff I haev always left on. If I am pullin the whole engine out I try to leave non important things still, because they can always be taken off when I have it on the houst(sp).

Just take your time, you seem to have taken a good amount off already, just look tos ee what is still connected or in the way, and when your lifting it out make sure your clearing everything and not pinching or caught on something.

Putting it abck together is the part that I always love ROFL " I don't think this goes to my car, must belong to the Z"

And a inportent one, TAKE YOUR TIME rushing and missing some thing can cost BIG$$$$ in the long run.

Also a good set of jack standsLOL

Axles
T-Case
Wiring
Fuel Lines
Vaccume Hoses
undo the engine mounts and lift it out
if the tranny is still on your going to have to go on a angle and fight with it for a bit, but it will come out.

While it is possible to pull just the motor. It is by far a lot easier to pull/install the motor and tranny as one, if you are able to. Just a little FYI.

I would read those those write ups ^^ and make a list of the tools/gaskets/seals/fluids/filters you will need so you have everything available. I hate having to make trips in the middle of a project for the little stuff you overlook. Take your time, grab a friend, and yank the motor/tranny assembly together. Develop a practical labeling system so things go back in the right place :thumb:

I have the Haynes Manual already. That is what I'm using as my main guide. Oh yeah, and thanks again Buck.

I agree with JamiesTsi about removing the engine & trans as one unit. I just pulled my engine for the first time over the holiday break. Overall, I thought it was really easy, but alot of work keeping track of all of the wires/vac hoses etc removed. If removing the engine/trans as a unit, remember to remove transfer case first obviously...

For me, a steep angle was required when pulling the motor/trans since I had to clear all of my abs stuff on the passenger side. Not sure if you car has abs. Good luck man:thumb:

Agreed, I've always found it easier to keep the trans on and go really crazy with the angle. It's pretty unnerving, but always works.
